Misako is THE salon I visit on a monthly basis coming up on 7 years now. If you are looking for a professional salon with talented stylists, friendly staff, reasonable rates and a clean environment... then Misako Hair Studio is the answer.
My stylist, Ryoko has been my go-to gal for all my haircuts, color, highlights and extensions. She gives the best shoulder massages and comfortable hair washes. I've tried other salons in the past and I have always gone back to my tried and true - Ryoko at Misako.
Another bonus to this salon is the free parking in the back. If you're planning to visit, just ask them for the parking pass. -

Today is my first visit at Misako on 888 Davie Street and Mami has won me over as a permanent regular. Mami has a good understanding of her clients' needs. Not only she is able to provide constructive suggestions, she is also able to execute the plan perfectly at the same time conservatively (i.e. seek confirmation in terms of the ideal length etc.). Mami is very professional and highly respects her own occupation as she is very detail minded throughout the whole process. I have been with Suki for over 5 years with Paul B. whom is more excited to talk about cooking and wine over my hair style. Recently, I have noticed that they are generally more "interested" in booking long hair and colouring clients. I'm out.

Don't let the Japanese name nor the lack of an English website deter you, because when it comes to hair, Misako can do no wrong. Well, specifically: Mami at Misako can do no wrong. As the kind of person who will find the definitive stylist, cleaner, doctor, etc, to suit the needs of each of my friends, I have a hard time admitting when I'm the one in need of professional care. But then it finally happened. The first step: admitting when you need help.
The next step? Finding just the right person to support you on your journey. Mami is just that. Sweet, funny, intuitive, stylish, and super skilled with all kinds of hair, Mami is the bee's knees when it comes to hairstylists/colourists in Vancouver. With minimal guidance, she is somehow able to decipher my few vague references and obscure hand gestures and turn them into something that is so much better than what I'd expected.
Also, a happy surprise: no product-pushing here. A simple, modern, and clean salon with absolutely no pretension means that I will be going back again and again.
... I guess that also means that I've completed the last few steps, haven't I? -

Robin M's review about Mami was spot on. She's been my stylist for 4 years now and even though I'm now living in Tokyo, I still come back to Vancouver to see her (partly due to the exorbitant salon prices here in Japan). I'm the kind of person who's never known what to do with my hair, so it's a huge relief that I can simply point to a picture on one of their many magazines and let Mami do her thing. Appointments are also rarely any trouble on short notice. I love this place!

I try to get hair straightening done when in Vancouver - the good ones in the Bay Area are crazy expensive. Yuko (Yuka?) helped me today. The process took 3 hours, but this is by far the best hair straightening service I've had in my life. And it's not expensive (C$250). Yuko was extremely patient, helpful, kind, skillful, just as you would expect from a good Japanese hair salon. Overall a very pleasant experience and great result.
