    Act 1, Scene 3, take 4.
    Aaaannndddd ACTION!
I came back again to see how well they have fared over the past few months.
The same lady worked there by herself.  Where was the famous noodle chef in the pictures?  Everytime I've been there he was nowhere to be seen.

Yas M wanted to try this place after I had raved about it back in the summer.
Funny how things change over time.  This is the tru test and measure of a restaurant.  To see how well they do after time and conditioning and repetitiveness.

My noodles were not chewy. they were soft and overcooked.
The soup was hot. I had the spicy ramen and the soup wasn't bad.  The meat was tasty but the noodles were a total letdown.

I felt sorry for the girl that had to work there.  I've only seen one other girl there before, but usually she works alone, or maybe it was the times that I've been there that she does everything solo.  If this is the case, then she's doing a formidable job.

But where was this famous cook from the pictures?  I was beginning to think that he lost interest in the business and started to just collect his money at night.

Yas M had her soup which was a basic Miso Ramen and she made one comment, well, two comments.  Ok. three comments that didn't favour the soup at all.

No Koku, no flavour, or lacking something that missed that extra dimension of flavour.

The soup also had the dried Tuna flakes which doesn't go with Miso ramen.  It made it taste...different.  Not bad, for some, but for the purists, not good either.

The ramen noodles were not chewy.  They were overcooked.

Before we finished our meal, the man in the pictures showed up, just before closing.  I am guessing he usually does this.  The lady went back to the kitchen to do her prep work for the next day.

My biggest question is this.  Why isn't the owner/chef working the kitchen daily?  Maybe he has a job somewhere else, but if this is the case, why open a restaurant?

It has potential, I've said thia before and I still believe it.
I am just hoping that the next time, I will be enticed and overwhelmed with  the greatness that it could atain.

Sure it's not really Japanese, pretending to be Japanese, but not really.
I don't care about that.  I jsut want.....

OK. if you watch the Ramen Girl movie, they talk about the passion that goes into the soup.  This is what it needs.  Passion.  That's why I dropped it a star to just 2.

    Typo's FOC, no tip neccesary.

They're open!  It was just under renovations or something.

Glad that they're back.  The noodles are… Read more »

    * Copying *

Ok, way back when the Japanese copied Chinese noodles and came up with ramen.

Things have apparently now gone full circle, as this "Japanese" ramen house is actually Chinese operated.

So in reality it is Chinese copying the Japanese copying of the Chinese.

    Phew.  That is damn confusing.

This place tries to pretend to be Japanese in several ways:

    1)  Japanese game show playing on the TV.
    2)  Japanese manga on a shelf to read.
    3)  Japanese in the name of the restaurant.
    4)  Japanese head scarf on the waitress.

Sadly they didn't really get the whole copying of ramen thing figured out though.

I had the shoyu ramen.  The egg and bamboo were still cold from the fridge!  So they brought down the temperature of the broth as well.  The chashu was also just lukewarm and was more fat than meat.  Sometimes when pork is hot, the fat adds flavour.  But when it isn't hot it just tastes like chewing on solid fat.  Not an appealing flavour at all.

To be honest, things might have been better if they just offered Chinese noodles instead of pretending.  I won't be returning.  There are many better ramen options available around town.

So cold when I walked in the door! Someone could do with turning a heater on in this place!

Cash only.  Good thing there is a fairly clear sign when you walk in the door and a bank next door.

Decor leaves much to be desired (very cheap cafeteria style) but all that should really matter is the food, right?

The food did not impress.  I'm currently very glad I have my Yelp mints to get that taste out of my mouth.  I had spicy miso ramen (red miso according to the menu) which lacked depth, smelled like the bonita flakes that were tossed on top (which I don't like in the first place) and which had the most bland, fatty slices of pork swimming in it.  The noodles themselves were fine but if the rest is bordering on terrible that makes very little difference.

Go elsewhere, though where there is any good ramen near this section of Burnaby is beyond me.

So, this was my 2nd time ever trying Ramen.  I'm by no means an expert on this subject.  So in comparison to my last experience, this is what I thought:

Pretty tasty ramen, less fatty than gMen ramen in Richmond. The shoyu broth was an opaque tan colour.  They use real bamboo shoots, not the canned stuff.  Well this could have been canned but it had more texture than the canned bamboo shoots.  It was good, but not as good as GMen... but then again, I'm still exploring the world of ramen.

The service was very attentive and polite.
