Review from Jenni B.
I am going to write my very tardy review of Mike's Flooring...
So, I needed flooring bad. The digusting old carpet complete with a massive burn hole from a former roommate needed to go. As we are renovating to sell we wanted something affordable but attractive; finding Mike's on Craiglist I sent the fella into the shop to look at the product first. I really liked Mike; a lot of contractors I have dealt with have been kinda shady, not reliable and didn't give a sod about the result, but Mike seemed commited to his customer being satisfied.
Having confirm that yes they have nice flooring Mike came over to measure and complete an estimate. We did laminate in the main area and recarpeted the bedrooms all with the [cheap] stuff. We booked the work for two days so logistically things would have somewhere to go.
My boyfriend was home when the work was being done; carpets went down fast and similarly the laminate did too. Unfortuantely my severely unlevel flat is now apparently unlevel from the laminate... didn't think of levelling and that wasn't a conversation we had had.
Another annoyance, and this will relate to the uneven structure, some of the closet runners couldn't go back in and like Luisa said in her review we have to shave a few doors now. If I had been home and the actual person doing to work had told me that I would have probably made them find a solution during install as compared to me now having to figure it out. My boyfriend was to call Mike about this concern, but hasn't. I feel that is important to note as Mike does geniunely seem to care that his customers are happy with the work. (And hence the late review as this was done in December).
Aside from those two annoyances the work they did was great. We didn't have baseboards put in (doing it ourselves), but the laminate itself looks awesome, its straight, no gaps, and the carpet looks particularly good... in sum a million times better than if we had done it ourselves.
If I would shopping for flooring again I would defiantely go back to Mike's Flooring based on price and level of service. -
Review from Victoria R.
Vancouver, BC
So based on the yelp recommendations I decided to give Mike a call. He called me back after filling out the online quote form, and arranged to meet at our place at 11am on Monday (Labour Day). I asked him if he was sure he was going to be working on a stat holiday, and he assured me, saying that he works every day.
Fair enough I thought.
11:00, and no mike.
11:15. Mike's not here yet.
11:30, and I call Mike's Flooring. The lady on the other end tells me to call his cell (seriously? I shouldn't have to chase this guy down, SHE should!).
I call his cell, voicemail. NOT IMPRESSED.
For someone who was reviewed as going "above and beyond" for customer service.. not impressed at all.
Mike called today (next day) to apologize. Against my better judgement, I rescheduled with him for tomorrow. Something tells me I may regret it - an apology doesn't make up for me burning my morning waiting for someone when I was TRYING to give them business.
Severe FAIL.
If I decide to go with him, I'll update my review - but to be honest, to remove the bad taste in my mouth from his fudge up, he'll have to either be ridiculously affordable or offer me an 'apology' discount. -
Review from Luisa D.
So I thought a lot about this review before I decided whether to give 3 or 4 stars. Mike's Flooring puts the 'busy' in business. Mike himself was the one who came over to assess the job. He makes all his notes and calculations in a tiny little journal that looks like the work of a madman genius. We went over what we needed done and he took measurements, showed us flooring samples and pumped out a quote all in about an hour. It all seemed so quick and I was feeling a bit nervous. The next day the quote came via email and we put down a 50% deposit.
We confirmed the date later and sure enough three guys showed up that morning raring to go. I tried to go over a couple of details with them but English was clearly not their strong suit so I left for work. I was still feeling nervous once I found out they'd have it all done in less than a day and our floors weren't exactly level (but we did upgrade to the higher end under pad).
When I got home I opened the door with trepidation and was delighted to see the hideous gray tile covered with a gorgeous wood grain laminate and white wood baseboards all around our suite. Upon further inspection I noticed some things that weren't right. A bathroom door that wouldn't close because of the trim (turns out we just need to have the door shaved), a closet door that wouldn't close because of the trim (Mike came back promptly to fix that), heating pipes that I wasn't expecting the old tile to have been removed from were now exposed (turns out our design guy from Lonetree was over and told them he'd have wooden boxes made to cover that). There's one corner where the trim doesn't seem straight but I let it go. Our walls are so NOT straight and I'm sure this job was rather challenging compared to perfectly walled places.
So everything got sorted out in the end. My advice is to make sure you get everything written down if you have any special items you want done or make sure you understand things like doors needing to be shaved. I think if a little more time had been taken going over these I wouldn't have been surprised when I came home.
This place is good for gettin' er' done! $1.99/sq ft for the laminate including installation is hard price to beat and our living room/dining room and halls are transformed! So for 520 sq feet, all the tiles baseboards ripped off and replaced with wood, the top end underpad plus all the debris removed came to under $3000. This was at least $1000 less than the guy who I know would have done impeccable work and taken longer to do it. For simpler jobs I would certainly recommend Mike's Flooring to anyone.Listed in: FTR - First to Review
