Mikado's is good for their market.  I don't get the impression that it is designed to be the best or the most traditional Japanese restaurant around - but their food is tasty anyway and strikes good balance for individuals or groups that may want to experiment with some tako while still getting some less adventurous dishes.

Their "dragon eye" rolls are insane!  EAT THEM!!!  They are some of the most delicious rolls I have had anywhere - even if everything else on the menu was terrible, this one menu item would make Mikado's worth a visit.  What is that sauce... mmmm nom nom.

It is not designed to be extremely fancy, but the restaurant is clean, the food is fresh, and the servers were reasonably prompt and friendly.

It's in a bit of an odd location, not in the trendy area of downtown. Don't let that throw you off, though.

The restaurant was quiet when I went, but kind of in a calm sort of way. My gal pal and I were seated quickly for lunch and had fun going through the big menu picking out all things Japanese for our midday eat.

Our waitress was great, and although Japanese isn't usually my first choice for a meal, I really liked my food. Plus the company was great :-)

If you're in the downtown area and willing to walk a few blocks off Jasper, definitely check out Mikado.

I went with my colleagues to Mikado for lunch. One of them is from Japan and was asking me about restaurants in Edmonton that serve Japanese food so I suggested this place as I had heard good things but hadn't tried it. We were seated in a private area and all ordered bento boxes. I was impressed with the amount of food and quality. The tempura was lightly battered and light but generous with 5 pieces. The chicken teriyaki sauce wasn't overly thick or heavy but had the right amount of flavour. I really enjoyed the dressing on the salad and the sushi was fresh and tasy. There was a lot of food but the price is a little more than other places offering bento boxes. I would definitely go back.

Long live the Jerry Roll! I've bemoaned the relative paucity of good sushi in this city, but Mikado reassured me that there are good options out there. The building doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is a cute assortment of booths and tables, plus the sushi assembly line in full view. Admittedly I haven't tried much on the menu yet, but I tried the Jerry Roll, which contains mango, kiwi, crab, avocado and (naturelement) very smoky bacon. It was a surprisingly lip-smacking combo of smoky and sweet with attractive presentation to boot. I shall return!

On my short 6 day trip to Edmonton, I insisted on eating at Mikado because of their sushi pizza. I didn't have any expectations because it has been over 4 yrs since I have last eaten here. I have to say it was quite disappointing. We ordered:

Sashimi Combo - It came with salmon, tuna, squid, surf clam and octopus. The squid was slimy and really bad. Everything else was ok but a couple of the items were borderline not fresh.

Dynamite roll - It was ok, not great but not too bad. I was surprised to see they did not use the typical fat short grain japanese rice for their sushi. It was a type of medium/long grain rice. What a way to cut cost (not impressed)

Salmon Sushi pizza - Not bad, with a nice spicy mayo and topped with nori n tobiko. The salmon was not bad. The rice was ice cold which we did not enjoy.

Over $50 for lunch and not great food.

Mikado is WAY overpriced and there's nothing special on the menu that pulls me in. Actually, I shouldn't say nothing because I do enjoy the dragon eyes.. but I would never go to Mikado just to get them.

I don't know how fresh everything was because all of my rolls were tasteless. The decor is really nice. Probably the nicest of any Japanese one in the city, but who wants to pay for that? The service is so slow. They took forever to bring out our food and the portions were weak.

I don't think I would come here again.

If you're looking for really decent Japanese food, this is the way to go.  My friend and I stuffed ourselves full of tapas and our $60 made perfect sense based on how absolutely full we were. The Dragon Eyes (fried salmon roll) and sushi pizza were absolute hits.

The service can be slow and the booths don't allow for much privacy, but there are are separate rooms that can likely be reserved (I'm not sure, but it seemed the groups eating in them had reservations).

All and all, I would definitely go there again and would love to introduce others to this restaurant.

Well I went in and the atmosphere is awesome. The large party rooms are awesome with the shogi walls, I believe there called. No shoes in the rooms seems very traditional. The issue was the price I went with a date and for two it costed us $120.00 and afterwards I went out to grab more food because it didnt really fill me up. Its a great atmosphere but not a filler [place, but hey thast just my opinion.

We tried this restaurant a couple months ago. I do not see the hype for this place. The food was OK but not no bells and whistles for being so fantastic. The sushi delights here are very average and found it a bit pricey. Will I go there again, maybe, but not going out of my way to go there or recommend it. I kind expected more from this place and left a bit disappointed.

I always associate Mikado with good Japanese food. They may not have the best Japanese food, but they are definitely one of my top picks. I have always enjoyed the food at Mikado; their food is  very delicious, although a bit expensive...otherwise I would always be here.

The menu here is what you would find at their other locations. you're new to this chain, you need totry their Dragon Eyes sushi rolls...it is something unique and their sauce is something special. Their Sushi pizza and Tsunami Salad are also good choices. Manago Tango, along with Rose rolls would be on my recommended list to try as well.

If you want to share a lot of sushi with a group of people, the Coast to Coast is highly recommended and fun to eat out of as it is served in a wooden boat. If you're looking for a full meal deal, the Bento boxes have always filled me up and have offered a good variety of food for my taste buds.

Mikado may be a bit more expensive than other Japanese restaurants, but you are also paying for the excellent service and the food quality.

If you're only going to hit one Japanese restaurant in Edmonton, let this be it. Its gone down a little since the early 2000s but its still a great restaurant.  Try the beef tataki, you won't regret it.

I don't get it. This place is pretty popular in Edmonton (it's always busy), yet I thought the food was....average? I decided to forgo my usual sushi hang-out to try out the much-hyped Mikado. The dragon eyes roll was really delicious (and if you do decide to go to Mikado, I would suggest those), but everything else was kind of bland. The avocado in one of my maki rolls was brown (probably a pre-made roll), and the rice didn't have that zing that sushi rice is generally known for. I wouldn't have been all that upset about my experience if the prices hadn't been so much steeper than other Japanese restaurants...
I would try this place again, but probably for some other Japanese dishes instead of sushi.

This is the best in Japanese cuisine - in a chain restaurant. What I was surprised to learn, is this place has been serving Edmonton since 1972. Which means, it was doing its thing really well, and quietly, until sushi became all the rage. So, the fact that it's a chain, doesn't cheapen a place like this. It actually points to the fact that it offered the best of the best so well that it multiplied, due to demand. You can come here for an authentic Japanese dining experience, complete with those little separate booths with sliding doors for a more private experience. The food is made at an open bar in front of you. It's art-making in action, with swiftness and precision. The plates look like art as they come to you, and while there's a bit of a wait, you can sip on some sake or Japanese beer, or just watch the food preparation (if you're sitting up at the bar, as I did). I sampled the mango tango rolls, but I plan to go back and try the Dragon Eyes and Isobe chicken. Maybe even tonight ... I'm getting so hungry just writing about it!

I've mentioned before how my friends love Japanese food and one of our other favorite places to get or fix is Mikado.  There are two locations that I know of, one downtown (they just renovated this place not too long ago and it looks great) and the other in South Side common (this location looks really fancy and would be a great place to take a hot date).  If you do go there I suggest the Dragon Eyes... it's a salmon roll with a special Mikado spicy dressing.  It's really good!  Some days I just order that because I need my fix for the month (great now I'm craving Dragon Eyes!).  Another great thing to try would be the deep fried squid (I'm not a fan of the peanut sauce that comes with it).  Also you can't go wrong with the bento boxes where you can get four different types of food in your box.  My friends really like to get the Dynamite Rolls or the Red Rose Rolls (I think that's what it's called... next time I got I'll check that out).  Their desserts are mighty fine too!  Aside from ice cream they also have some very yummy cheesecakes, a really good chocolate cake and one berry flavored cake with chocolate moose.  So good!

I have never been disappointed by the Mikado, either downtown or at thw Southside location. This is definitely Edmonton's best sushi/sashimi restaurant. Like downtown, this location also has a robata grill, but, honestly, all I ever eat there is nigiri or sashimi, with the occasional maki once in a while. They have an excellent chirasi bowl that's perfect for lunch. Most sushi fish is not "fresh", but fresh frozen to eliminate parasites. That being said, I have never had watery or mushy sushi presented to me. The fish has good texture, temperature, firmness with the subtle variations in flavour I'd expect. I can't comment on the Cali-sushi which I am sure is quite popular. I don't eat that stuff; I recommend being adventurous and trying the traditional nigiri and sashimi on offer. Sushi/sashimi is all about subtle flavours and contrasting textures, trust the chefs to present pleasing combinations.
