Mikado is a chain of Japanese restaurants in Edmonton. There are 4 locations that I know of and I have been to three, and of the three I have been to, this one is the best. The restaurant is modern and airy with wood beams everywhere and quite a few sectioned off private rooms. The servers dress in traditional robes and the place is very clean. The menu can be a bit more expensive than other japanese restaurants in town, but I find the quality of food makes up the difference. I have never received a piece of sushi here that appeared less than fresh (if its fishy smelling, think twice!! This is from someone who has had first hand experience with sushi food poisoning!!) and I always enjoy the specials menu. The latest thing I tried off their specials menu was a "green roll" with avocado, asparagus, chop chop scallops and a herb dip. It was fresh and delicious!! I think they should add it to their regular menu as I have been craving it since!
This place can get very busy on weekends around dinner time, but the wait is usually no more than 15 minutes at peak time for a table. -

Expect to wait 15 min. for a table of four. The floor space in the West end location is much narrow and smaller, the decor is very clean, bright and modern. Everything tasted just the same as the South Common location. Since the day it opened, I find the Dragon eye to be smaller and smaller in portion?

Mikado isn't as great to me as it seems to other people.
I keep going back to mikado just to try and see if the terrible food I had before was just a one-time thing, but I feel disappointed every time.
The servings are terribly small for what you pay.
Recently, I ordered a katsu donburri. What I got was a tiny bowl filled to the top with soggy rice and a sorry-ass excuse of pork katsu on top with onions and eggs scattered around.
If you like to eat chicken nuggets with rice and pay $12 for it, come here.
If you want a real donburri, you're better off heading to Kobe.
My dinner companion ordered the dragon eyes and it seems like they made the pieces wayy smaller than when I first came here 2 yrs ago.
Service wise, they're nice and refilled my drink quickly. -

Food: Mikado has excellent tasting sushi, good selection of drinks.
Price: Price is higher than most places, but I suppose that is because the quality is a grade higher in food.
Service:
West: Pretty average. I have been there twice, and the West Mikado service kind of sucks. They do the bare minimum. I made reservations and the first thing they say when you come in is - "You have until 8pm, there is another reservation after you." And then the waitress comes the least she has to. Never filled our tea, and then took FOREVER to actually take our credit card so we could pay.
Mikado is a great restaurant, but if you want good service DO NOT go to the West Location. I have been to the Downtown location and it leaps and bounds better service-wise. -

The Mikado is one of Edmonton's premier chains of Japanese restaurants. I ventured into the new west end location this afternoon for a snack. The place is much larger on the inside than the small storefront implies. Very white, clean, well-lit. I loved how the servers were dressed in traditional robes. I found the menu to have an excellent selection of sushi, as well as beef and chicken dishes.
I went for an order of vegetable tempura, which was delicately arranged in an upwards motion. Two large pieces each of carrots, squash, yam, broccoli, and zucchini, served with a soy dipping sauce - it tasted as good as it looked. My guest had one of the lynch specials, called chicken nanban. Several thinly sliced pieces of chicken breast were tempura breaded and served in a soy sauce and topped with house-made tartar sauce. It almost reminded me of fish and chips - except it was chicken! However, the soy sauce brought me back to reality and added a very delicious flavour kick.
We were both eyeing several of the other dishes such as teriyaki beef and chicken, udon noodles, and yakitori skewers. Numerous vegetarian selections are clearly labeled on the menu. Although Mikado is a bit pricier than other Japanese restaurants I have visited, the service and quality accounts for this. -

I have always enjoyed the food at Mikado. My first experience was at their downtown location, followed by their southside location...both scoring very well and making me want to come back. I was very delighted to hear of a new west side location opening up. Their food is very delicious, although a bit expensive...otherwise I would always be here.
As I walked in, I was greeted with a different layout than the other restaurants. There are a lot of booths lined with white leather...a nice touch although may have been a poor decision practically as you can see all the dirty marks. Regardless we were seated in one of the rooms and sealed off with decoration-engraved sliding glass doors.
The menu is what you would find at their other locations. You HAVE to try their Dragon Eyes...their sauce is something specials. Sushi pizza is also a good choice, as well as the Tsunami Salad. If you want to share a lot of sushi with a group of people, the Coast to Coast (served in a wood boat) is highly recommended. If you're looking for a full meal deal, the Bento boxes have always filled me up and have offered a good variety of food for my taste buds. Their creations all come at a high price, but you will not be disappointed. -

I'm not a massive fan of sushi (I can just imagine everyone freaking out) but my coworkers and I visited here a couple of weeks ago. As usual, we order the Bento Boxes. With Japanese restos, I always have to make sure there is no shellfish anywhere in my dish. So they accommodated me with extra tempura veggies. That was a good touch.
As for the atmosphere, it has a modern decor and have special rooms for larger parties with your own privacy by just sliding the door. But nevertheless, sushi is sushi. So it's all the same to me. I don't think there isn't an experience that would a Japanese resto any different.
