Holy crap, I believe I have died and gone to heaven... I can't believe that I just discovered that there is actually a store that sells mid century modern furniture and accessories in town. I love this stuff and I didn't even know Calgary had a store like this. If you don't know what mid century modern is, it's just a fancy word for vintage and retro. If you watch the show Mad Men then you will know what I mean.
Eames, Hermin Miller, or Knoll, all the famous designers of the 50s to 70s era, the type of furniture Nood and IKEA aspire to do reproductions of. Mid century items are not only classics but also the store actually has the original and authentic items from that time and some of them are even signed. I couldn't believe my eyes.
The space is a small store in Inglewood right on the main strip right across from Espy, but it is chockfull of vintage and retro delights: tulip chairs, chrome, glass, teak and fibreglass chairs. The owner definitely has an eye for design and prices are fair. There are things in there that I remember my aunt having in her basement that I wouldn't give the time of day and now I wish I had kept them because now they are so rare and collectible.
The owner can even add you to her wish list, if there is something you have been dying to own, she can source it for you and contact you if it comes in the store.
But check every day, I think they are only open from Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 5 because things go fast, I saw several customers enter then exit the store with something they had just purchased.

This gem of a store is worth a visit - the last time I popped in they were offering an amazing selection of vintage french design posters. That being said, the furniture is the real highlight, with clean lines and that sleek modern look. You never know what you will find in this little shop!

Veronica M. is totally right, Mid-Century Dweller is such a gem! It's a wonderful addition to the 9 Avenue strip in Inglewood. I was so happy to stumble upon this store - don't be fooled by the tiny storefront, MCD has a back room with a lot more fabulous finds. The owner, Dinah, does a great job of finding authentic pieces for the store, she knows alot about what she's selling and has a great eye for design. I recently purchased a desk from the store and was blown away by the great customer service I received. The stock changes quickly so make sure you stop in often or check the MCD website (product pictures and prices). I'm looking forward to shopping there again.

It's so nice to see an antique store with such a great niche. the proprietor is knowledgeable and helpful. if she doesn't have exactly what you're looking for, she will keep an eye out. the new storefront does a great job of showcasing the store, and there is always high quality teak to be had. this is a destination for the discerning collector, and has passed the approval of the antique aficionados in my family (no small feat).

Dinah Gaston likes good design and is interested in an object's history. She has a huge obsession for the designers of the Mid Century Modern era. Not finding a place in Calgary to purchase it is the reason that Mid-century dweller came into fruition.
She hopes MCD will be one of your weekly haunts or at least a place where inspiration and dialogue about design can happen.
