Naef (the barber): So, how did you hear about us?
Matthew L: Well, I was looking to get a haircut within walking distance of my house and read some very positive reviews online.
    Naef: Yelp?
    M: Yes
Naef: All of the reviews are very good, except for that one guy - he doesn't like many businesses and is always just looking for a deal.
M: Well, there are certain reviewers I trust and they described you as everything i'm looking for in a barber.

Naef then assessed my hair, told me that he should never use the clippers on it (and neither should any other barber). He then quickly and precisely started to cut my hair.

"You are an artist," I said.

10 minutes later, Naef finished cutting my hair. He then brought out a mirror to show me its appearance from behind - only for me to witness evidence of my own mortality - my ever expanding bald spot. Oh well - my hair looks nice and tidy for job interviews.

Naef is everything you could ask for in a barber - note that I am using the word barber instead of stylist - friendly, skilled and quick.

I've had my hair cut by Naef for 4 yrs. Just like him, I would like to keep my review simple and to the cut.

He is really good and a master at what he does.
15 mins and you have the haircut you've always been wishing for.
For a nominal charge you have nothing to complain.
Go early in the morning else it can get really crowded.
Keep cash as no credit/ debit card is accepted.

I always tip him decently as he makes your hair look really good after a haircut. And his best work on my hair is always the next one!!!

Mickey appears to be a very knowledgeable and experienced barber.  He does a fine job and maintains a colloquial and friendly atmosphere in his shop.  I'll be the first to tell you that Mickey's is a bit of an old school barber shop, so don't expect to get some fancy cut and hair coloring done here.  It's certainly more of the 80s kind, the ones I used to go to when I was a kid.  He might know of only 5-6 different kinds of styles.  He adopts a very conservative approach to hair styling.

He seems to cut hair at a freakishly fast rate, almost like Edward (yes, I mean Scissorhands).  But, at the same time maintains an accurate form.  I was pretty satisfied with my hair cut and will certainly be going back to him.  The shop has a pretty run down atmosphere to it (which again, doesn't bother me per se).  It certainly feels like you're having a haircut in Beirut (he's Lebanese).

So, the shop is now moving to a new location near the Hub Cigar store on 103rd and 81st Ave.  Pretty close by.  Look forward to going there again.  Depending on who goes there, the experience is going to be quite different and I appreciate what Cody B. says about his cut.

I've been going twice a month for nearly 12 years.  I keep my hair in a military high and tight flat top with a landing strip; one of the hardest men's cuts to do well.  Go to those stylists and they won't even attempt it.  Nick (Naif) the barber at Mickey's does it in twenty minutes twice a week, perfectly.  I never find a hair out of place or missed.  I go twice a month to keep it fresh looking and still pay less than one visit to a salon, even though I tip Nick 25%, he's worth it.

I've found there places that cut my hair in the way I like it - with some longevity, straight and even (1) Astor Place Hairstylists in NYC, (2) Rudy's downtown LA at the Standard and (3) Mickey's on Whyte.

If you're a guy, with a medium or short cut, it's fast even if all the seats are occupied waiting (I average 45 minutes over the year, many times it's right into the chair) and he never failed to perform the haircut asked for.  Even the physically and technically demanding cut I ask him to do every two weeks.

The man is a genius witht he clippers and he's not shy to use them, so he gets things done straight and quickly, no hesitation cuts and then going over and over again to "tweak" it.

From '95 until 2002, I went to Mickey's for my haircuts, but then I moved two hours from Edmonton and only made it back on weekends.  Because he is so busy on weekends, I spent the next 8 years trying to find someone else who could work magic on my 'do.  A few months back, after almost a decade away, I was able to make it back to Mikey's.  He sat me down in the chair, took one look at me and said, "I don't recognize your face, but I recognize your hair" and then he proceeded to tell me in detail exactly how I used to get my hair cut (3 on top blended into a 2 on the sides and back)....very impressive!  I'm moving back to e-town and will be a regular at Mickey's again.

A small place in the heart of Old Strathcona.  No pretence just a great haircut
