This is a restaurant that I visit over half of the time when I visit Des Monies.  Which is saying something, because I loooove to try new things.  All of the sauces, salad dressings, bread, and desserts (not that I ever have room for it) are made in house.  The prices are reasonable and you get a lot of food.  I generally get the chicken piccatta (the petite portion) and still walk away with food on the plate.  Which is a travesty because it is delicious!

I ate here for lunch on a Sunday. I was torn between giving two stars and three but decided on two because...

    1. my salad, although tasty, had pieces of lettuce with rotted parts on it.  I saw it immediately, why didn't the chef?  I cleaned it up and ate the rest.

    2. The meatballs and sauce on my meatball sub were lukewarm. How do you have lukewarm marinara sauce in an Italian restaurant. Whatever, it was certainly not above the 145 degree danger zone. Another health warning but I ate on (starving!).

    3. The bread for the meatball sandwich was poor. Way too soft for a meatball sub.

The food tasted good but I travelled on waiting for a digestive emergency.

Living in the neighborhood, our family has been visiting Mezzodi's regularly, and more frequently in the last year, so I figured it was about time to write a review.
Mezzodi's offers unpretentious atmosphere, friendly service, good food, and enough variety to satisfy every taste.
Among the dinner appetizer choices, the grilled gorgonzola polenta cakes topped with mushroom ragout provide an original, flavorful choice. The serving is generous enough to wet two people's appetite. Our daughter is a big fan of the calamari, which is indeed nicely done and served with spicy aioli. For a slightly lighter fare, go for the shrimp fra diavolo, served with a spicy butter sauce and toasted baguette slices. The shrimp might have started out frozen, and the butter sauce is a tad salty, but overall it is consistently a well executed and satisfying dish. I ordered this as an entree once and went with the one-pound serving (there is a half-pound option too); it was so generous I could barely finish it.
My personal favorite on the menu is a roasted pear and walnut salad with gorgonzola and champagne vinagrette. It's large enough to be a a meal in itself, particularly if, like me, you subsidize it with freshly baked bread.
If you are up for pizza, try the Joe, a good south-side Italian combination, or the chicken pesto pizza with bacon and red onion for something more creative.
Only once did our family have enough room to try dessert, and we were presented with a wonderful tiramisu, made from scratch by the mother's owner; now, I'm Italian and I think I can make a pretty mean tiramisu, so I tend to be a little picky about it. This one was worth the calories!
As fore beverages, Mezzodi's offers a decent selection of moderately priced wines, with some served by the glass. They also have a full bar and have recently begun advertising $5.00 Martinis anytime (I'm not a Martini drinker, so...)
As a final note, if you are looking fora good value, go to Mezzodi's for Happy Hour, Monday-Friday from 4:00 to 6:00, when all pizzas and appetizers are half price.

The food and staff are amazing.  There wasn't much of a wait to be seated or for our food to come out. Bread is always served warm!! The toasted ravioli is delicious as an appetizer.  Most entrees are wonderful and you MUST save room for the chocolate falling down cake, it is absolutely wonderful!!! I would drive to Mezzodi's just to get this cake!!!

We took advantage of Mezzodi's new delivery service.  There were 2 of us who ordered. The food took 45 minutes to be delivered when we were 1 mile down the road. We both ordered Mezzodis Clubs. One had half a piece of bacon on it, the other one had the bacon missing completely.  Neither had cheese and were both cold by the time they got here. You could tell by the to-go box that the food was thrown in there. Definitely not worth the price paid.

Mezzodi's has recently undergone new management, and we went yesterday to test the waters.  Lucky me, I liked it even more.  They have kept my favorites on the menu (best bruschetta  in town) and added new entrees and specials.  Also,  happy me, they are open for lunch as well as dinner 7 days a week now.  We were at lunch and I had the gnocchi special, it was meaty and the gnocchi were tender and homemade.  We also got one glass of wine free when purchased with another glass because we had a used ticket from the Fleur Four.

It's good food, now even better and now open for lunch - who knew?

http://Restaurant.com brought us here.  The atmosphere was nice - very cozy and all kinds of people were dining the night we were there.  I was suprised how many times I've driven by on my way to the airport and never noticed it!

I had the Sophia pasta which was very tasty and required me to bring some home.  I was disappointed when we ordered dessert - creme brulee - and were told they were out.  This seemed odd considering we were there around 6 pm on Friday.  How do you run out??

I might come back again although Des Moines has many other good Italian restaurants.

Our first visit to Mezzodi's and it was excellent-we went for an early supper. I had the smoked chicken orecchiette which was excellent and my husband raved about his ravioli and his potato pepper jack soup. I was also pleased that my daughters chicken tenders came with both regular and sweet potato fries and some sliced oranges. She gave her meal 2 thumbs up.

Service was prompt and friendly and our waitress was quick to keep our glasses filled-a challenge I'm sure as it was a hot day and we were draining them pretty quickly.

Can't wait to go back and try out their other offerings.

Back in town again... Shout out to my sfs friends @ the angb!
Love this place, the 1/2 pound burger was good. Service fast, and the salad nice, and when I tried the croutons, to die for!
It's a classy little place. Nice bar, free wifi. $5 martinis 4-6 m-f.
I'm making this a regular stop when I'm near DES moines.

First visit based on ratings here.  I am on a low-fat program and Julie, my server was wonderfully accommodating!  The cooks were able to prepare my dinner as requested without sacrificing any of the flavor.  One of the best low-fat piccatas I have ever tasted! Service was fast and efficient, and my beverage was never empty. It's also nice that they have petite portions available to order.

In the assessment of the atmosphere - it is calm and relaxing... a nicety for weary travelers eating alone.  Amazing how they have transformed a former Denny's building! And the 60's music of Sinatra and Martin?  That's appropriate nostalgia for an Italian restaurant!!!

I will definitely be making this a regular stop when I travel to DSM!

I've only eaten here for lunch. Service has always been great. They have great salads...although their menu just changed and it is more limited over lunch.

I ate here in December and the place was packed full (good thing we had reservations). The waitress was very friendly and was always smiling. The Chicken Parmesan was the best I've ever had! It's very crispy and delicious. Steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes were great as well. The NY Strip steak was pretty good, but I've had better. The upside down cake with ice cream, chocolate and raspberry drizzled on top.

The Bad: Just a plain old not-exceptional lettuce salad came with the meal. The waitress boxed up our meals and forgot to put vegetables in our to-go box even after she asked us. I wish places would just let you box up your own food!
