Holy smokes, these burritos here are pretty damn good! Never noticed or paid attention to this place before. How long has it been here? Thanks to Yelp I read the reviews looked at the star ***** ratings and took the chance and got a few for me and mom's. Only my 2nd time here and they were still pretty damn tasty, and for much less than El Farolitos or La Taqueria Guadalajara. Just a couple blocks away. I am becoming an expert when it comes to eating and knowing where all the best burritos are in the Bay Area. Had no problems with the service either. For those who want a change from El Farolitos you might want to check this place out. Something "Yummy for the Tummy." And there open late too! :-d

What awful customer service and food! We are a regular customer of this taqueria ... Have been coming here for years! Since we moved into the neighborhood 15 years ago! But today was the last straw! I am NEVER returning again!
I order a lengua super burrito, a super taco and a taco with avocado!
First of all, the avocado on the taco was brown! Who in the world eats a brown almost black avocado??? Secondly, the burrito tasted spoiled. It was either the sour cream or cheese because the super taco tasted spoiled too. Also the carne asada has no flavor and was dry!
We called the shop and spoke with the manager and told him the problem. He said please come down and we will give your a new burrito and taco. When we arrived, he said there was nothing wrong. I said why did you make us come down here again???? He has no answer! Long story short! I am never coming here again....and I really hope if you decide to check this place out, you will be careful...I hope you don't have an awful experience like we did tonight!
Worse food and customer service ever! -

Best taqueria in the Excelsior. I have tried their quesadillas and burritos. The menudo soup is great for the cold winters (and summers) of sf.
The ownership here cannot control this downside too much- the commercial strip has graffiti and littering problems. I have been avoiding going to Excelsior in the evenings then. -

My husband eats here almost everyday. He loves their grilled chicken burrito and grilled tilapia dinner plate. I haven't tried their burrito but my husband brought home the grilled tilapia dinner plate for me and its delish. You can order it plain, garlic or spicy. All is good! It comes with rice, beans, tomatoes, avocados and tortillas. Tasty and healthy! A+

THE BEST HANGOVER CURE: MENUDOOOOOOO!
Most people slurp pho, jook, or devour a greasy plate of hashbrown, eggs and bacon to cure their hangover. I, on the other hand, choose to gnaw on cow stomach and trotters, a "barnyard in a bowl" to rid my hangover. Yup, it's the FOB in me!
In the last 4 months, I've been coming to Mexico Tipico almost every weekend to get my hands on their bowl of menudo (only served on the weekends) and to satiate my post-drinking ravenous craving for something soupy.
For a mere $6.50, you get a huge bowl of menudo that's overflowing with honeycomb tripe and trotters (feet) that's gelatinous and so soft that it literally melts-in-your-mouth. http://www.yelp.com/bi... The red hued broth is rich, comforting, and packed with deep complex flavors with mild chili nuances. It's also accompanied with warm corn tortillas, diced onions, cilantro, lime, red chili pepper flakes and dried oregano. I normally add all the spices for an added layer of heat, tang, and herbaceousness.
I've tried 3-4 places in SF and Mexico Tipico has the BEST menudo that's consistently good and several dollars cheaper than its competitors which keeps me coming back for more.
So how exactly does Menudo cure a hangover? It's believed that the tripe/stomach's sponginess will absorb the alcohol in your stomach. Makes sense doesn't it?Listed in: LATE NIGHT DRUNK MUNCHIES!, Offal Cuisine - The Inner FOB…, ANDALE, ANDALE, ANDALE: Give…

I was hesitant to try this place for breakfast. Me and my boo were walking down Mission looking for a breakfast/brunch place. I didn't expect a taqueria would have the traditional American breakfast. Hey, life's full of surprises.
They offer eggs, omelettes, pancakes, toast, sausage, house potatoes...what else could you want?
We enjoyed a filling breakfast for two, drinks included for 18$...now that's a deal!
Polite service & homey atmosphere. I'll be back to try other items! -

Great food. Great service and sooo cheap. Really great place to pick up a burrito on the go. Currently my favorite Taqueria.

Ok, so I used to be team farolito...then I realized that their niche was just to slather on gobs and gobs of sour cream into their burritos until you get a soggy mess in your hands. Then i switched over to team cancun just for their wet burrito and melon agua frescas...still have mad respect, but my latest venture put me face to face with an unbalanced, lukewarm burrito, still the size of a newborn, but being mostly composed of rice.
I have graduated to Mexico Tipico because the quality of the food is top notch without sacrificing price. I always rate a taqueria by the quality of their burrito and tipico chops their meat options into fine pieces, leaving out the gristle and fat and taking on this amazing charred flavor, which I find lacking in other major contending taquerias. The meat is also typically abundant, and well balanced with the other basic elements like cheese, guac, salsa, rice, etc. It's nice to get a little bit of everything in each bite!
But what I love about tipico is the fact that they have an extensive menu of traditional foods. I've tried the dinner plates and they are fantastic! Standouts would be the chicken mole and caldo de res (beef stew type soup), and they supply you with a little container of warmed tortillas to eat with your food. Hit up that salsa bar they have in the back (I always load up on the pickled jalapenos with the spicy salsa) and you have yourself a meal that will tickle all your senses. late night senses, even, as they are open late on the weekends so *DRUNK FOOD ALERT!* -

***** DO NOT EAT THE RICE! *****
I ate here twice and watched them refill the rice container with rice microwaved in a white "thank you" plastic bag, yes those same plastic bags they give you when you get take out. I am not a chemist, but I know that those white plastic bags are NOT microwave safe or food safe. I would say something, but I don't want them to react in a negative way. Now that you know, you can make the decision to eat the rice or not. I just had to get it off my mind.
I got tacos (shrimp & fish) both times and I must say that it's good for the money. The shrimp tacos is my favorite. I will try their seafood soup the next time I go. -

I love Mexican food. Since I moved away from LA I've always been looking for a taqueria that doesn't serve lettuce in their burritos. This place wouldn't even think about it (thank you, lord!). Everything here is fresh. The salsa and guacamole is excellent. Fresh tortilla chips!
My favorites are the super carne asada burrito, and the chorizo burrito. Amazing.
Staff is always friendly, and fast. I'm here at least twice a month. -

mmmm tacos ... Fish tacos? 1 star! Shrimp tacos? 1 star! Steak Taco? 1 star! The first three stars are rewarded because of their taco goodness. Each one was well seasoned and was put together oh so perfectly.
Finally the last star is because they offered me a another bag of chips (I also ordered a burrito for someone else), which is way more considerate than the asshole at El Farolito by the Safeway on Mission who refused to give me extra chips when I bought 3 orders of food from him. Dont go there, go here! -

I lived in excelsior all my life and finding a good taqueria is like finding a new religion. I've notice there has been a lot of business coming and going and I finally don't have to drive far to get some really good carnitas. Don't get me wrong, all the others meats are as delicious, I just love pork, and my favorite is their tacos.
If you live in the area or are curious about my comment, give this place a try and let me know if I am wrong.

From the outside it looks like an average Mission SF Taqueria, but one of the best at least on my side of the mission. Their salsa verde could be its own menu item. Keeping with my gluten tree diet I go with tacos here (corn tortillas, of course) However, I will share that the chips here are off limits for me as they are cooked in the same fryer as flour products. Also, if your allergy is severe they do cook everything on the same grill so if cross contamination is a concern I would stay away. (While they don't do it automatically, someone may request their flour tortilla grilled, you get the picture)
I've also had the shrimp soup (w/ corn tortillas) with no repercussions (w/ gluten allergy)
Its pretty bare bones inside and is usually pretty cold so I take the food to go only. -

I was surprised how much I liked this place. I've been trying to eat at all the Taquerias in the Mission (to very little success) and I was pulled in here by the location and the yelp reviews.
The quesadilla I had was just about the best ever. It was a little smaller than the norm but it was absolutely delicious. When I bit into the tortilla it was grilled and salty and had FLAVOUR! I liked how it wasn't overwhelmed with cheese and that you could taste the meat, salsa, and guacamole with every bite.
Plus they give you free chips with every order! I have to admit, the salsa verde they serve is my favourite yet.
I have a weekly craving to go to this place...Listed in: Hellooooo Taquerias!

There are Taquerias a'plenty in this very long stretch of Mission Street... Mexico Tipico doesn't stand out from street level, but step indoors and see why it actually is a level well above the rest.
I've come to know and love this Mexican joint after dining here once a week for the last few months. The odd day (4 times to be exact) I decide to switch it up and have my tacos or burritos elsewhere... I can't help but regret not coming here.
Their complimentary chips are supremely fresh, made in-house and the best in the neighborhood when paired with their salsa bar.
They're also a little more eco-friendly than other Taquerias: they have real cutlery and little glass bowls for the salsa, not plastic straight-to-the-already-overstuffed-landfill cutlery & bowls other places offer.
As other reviews have mentioned- the atmosphere is dull, but the quick service & phenomenal food take center stage.
Just ignore the draft of the open door, even on a chilly winter night Mexico Tipico is worth it. -

San Francisco, CA
They definitely master the authentic feel - random décor, one Virgin Mary painting, some warning in Spanish (maybe that the place is under 24 hour surveillance?), juicer in the corner, sketchy neighborhood, TV with sports programming, and a framed soccer jersey. As I was waiting for my order, someone wandered in and asked everyone there for spare change. Don't come here for ambiance.
The menu includes nachos, tortas, burritos ($4.90 for a regular, your choice of meat), soups (popular with the locals), platillos, enchiladas, beer and Mexican beverages. They have a salsa bar with three kinds of salsa. The one that looks like salsa fresca with onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro is very spicy, fresh and flavorful.
I ordered two tacos ($2.35 each) and received a basket of free corn tortilla chips. These were thick, crispy, sweet and fresh. The tacos (two small corn tortillas) were covered with meat, salsa, onions and finely shredded cilantro. Simple and fresh, the way I like them. The tortillas were a little harder and chewier than I'm used to. I could use more cilantro and onion but maybe they had some at the salsa bar. The meats are superb and the salsas are excellent.
* Lengua taco: Possibly the most tender lengua chunks I have ever encountered, I was afraid they would fall apart if I poked them too hard with a fork. Melt in your mouth savory deliciousness.
* Grilled chicken taco: Mmm, loved the tender, highly flavorful chunks of skinless marinated chicken.
The open kitchen makes it easy to see that they make things from scratch.

To celebrate National Taco Day (I didn't make that up) last Sunday 10/4, I went to one of my favorite taquerias (I also like Taqueria Cancun). This place is only a couple of years old, it replaced popular Taqueria La Altena.
LOVE the complimentary house made tortilla chips when dining here. Really GOOD chips, much better than what u get at most other places. They have a salsa bar with many choices (fresh chopped salsa, green, red, etc.). But if u place your order to go, they give u "regular" store bought tortilla chips instead.
The menu is VERY extensive - tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, platos, alambres (skewers), tortas (sandwiches), etc. and they often have specials like nopales (cactus), pozole, etc. hand written on a whiteboard. For dessert sometimes they have a choco flan (2 layers: top half is flan, bottom half is chocolate cake).
There's a large variety of meat choices: carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, chile verde, grilled chicken, stewed chicken, lengua (beef tongue), cabeza (mix of beef head, ears, tongue), sesos (cow brains), buche (pork stomach), etc. Note that they use Mexican crema (a type of rich & sweet heavy cream), instead of the sour cream found at other places.
I like traditional tacos, so I ordered lengua & sesos. I also like their fish ceviche tostada. Delicious!! Plus a cup of cool melon aguas fresca. Cheap, good food, and open late. Highly recommended!Listed in: Bargain Eats, Tacos & Burritos por favor

So, after having a craving for flan, I decided to come here...because the main picture is of chocolate flan! ha.
I decided to get a burrito also. I got the pollo asado con queso y crema. No cebolla, no pico, no green stuff. lol. I just wanted chicken, cheese, beans, rice, and sour cream! I generally don't like pollo asado from taquerias because its always fatty but this was perfect!! I loved it! I only ate 1/3 of it so I had enough room for the flan.
I got the regular flan. It was great. Nothing more to say about it, really. Just great!
If I ever have that craving for flan again, I'll be back. Even if I do have to suffer the 30 minute bus ride on the 14. bleh. lol -

Burlingame, CA
Mexico Tipico in San Francisco came out and catered a farewell party for a former co-worker in our Burlingame office earlier this year. Staff were so happy with the menu and service - so we asked them to cater our staff picnic at a local park in Burlingame!
Huge hit - they were super efficient and generous with their portions. We had a very basic menu - tortillas, grilled chicken or steak, re-fried beans, lettuce and fresh tomato/onions.
They provided setup, service and breakdown. Easy. It was the perfect meal for a sunny day in Washington Park, and didn't weigh staff down right before one of the funnest obstacle courses ever!
They're certainly on my short list of caterers for future parties! -

One of my favorite taquerias in the City.
Top choices for me:
Tacos:
Al Pastor, very good and flavor, its addicting
Tripas, very good also, ask them to cook it crispy
I like them with onion and cilantro only.
Sopes
Never had these before. I can describe them as a thick corn tortilla base, topped with beans, choice of meet, salsa, cheese & crema.
It would be similar to a tostada, but these are much better.
They also have fresh oysters and cocteles.
They are open to 3 am in the weekends, perfect! -

I was in burrito limbo for a while since having a bad one at Taqueria La Iguana Azul.
But, I had a burrito at Tipico Taqueria Restaurant (which is where Taqueria La Altena used to be) and I was pretty impressed--especially when I saw the cook cut up a piece of tongue for my own personal burrito!
The burrito I had tasted fresh...
I had one at Taqueria Menudo a couple of weeks ago... and eating their tongue burrito, I caught a side sniff during one of my chews of older funky meat. Then, the ugliness came on... unpeeled tongue piece... I was chewing on an unpeeled tongue piece. Gross!!!
None of that happened today. Soft delicious meat... fresh... good salsa with the right hot bite. The burrito came wrapped in tin foil on wax paper on top of a real plate!!!! That spoke volumes to me. I'm still Chinese enough to eat pizza with knife and fork and am the same way with a burrito.
Also, there's no strange stuff going on in this burrito of mine.
You know... multicultural nightmares do happen in San Francisco where you get coleslaw on one end and fruit salad on the other. That didn't happen.
I was so happy there was no corn in this burrito (like at Taqueria Los Coyotes). That's just wrong to me.
I do miss the burritos I had at Taqueria Maria that used to be on Geneva Avenue.
I give Mexico Tipico Taqueria Restaurant my full approval. The decor is so damn orange yellow and sunny.
************************************************** ********************
After seeing a Barbara Stanwyck double feature (All I Desire and There's Always Tomorrow) at the Castro, I stopped at Mexico Tipico and ordered a super tongue taco. Again, it was fresh with plenty of sour cream and guacamole... underneath it all was a lot of meat. The tongue was tender and tasty. Not at all sour like I usually get.

For that, I upped my rating of this place from four stars to five. Recently I took my friend from Los Angeles, who is a picky eater, and he liked the place a lot. He said the food was tasty.

awesome place. I love this burrito place much more then the places around it - El Manudo, who give me guilt stricken faces as I bypass them to go here. Definitely preferable to being stabbed or spit on in El Farolito.
Also - best damn burritos for their pricing, 4.50 for a regular burrito, 6.50 for a super. And they -taste- good, not the beans and rice crap you'd find around 24th or 16th and mission, or the "b*tch you must be kidding" looks you get when you order a regular burrito. Regular burritos are quality, filled with some of the best damn salsa I can find in this ever expanding city and its overpriced crap. Salsa you want to bathe in, salsa you want to put into five little plastic cups and take home with you.
Hmn what else. Home-made chips that are decadent. Staff that are pleasant and have shown me they are willing to go that extra mile for me.
Keep in mind, this is a sports-oriented taqueria, there are two flat screens and a juke box system. So if you want to sit down to a private table and heat lamps with little candles, probably want to find another venue. if you have common sense and want quality food, come here.
Recommendations:
- Huevos con Chorizo (an entire plate of amazing)
- Mexican glass coke (no corn syrup)
- Shrimp Tacos
- Regular burrito with Carne Asada
- 1.00 side of Guacamole about the size of your fist
- home-made chips available if you eat in-house*
- Awesome quesadilla. its melted cheese and tortilla and a load of flavor. Put some shrimp in there.
- Lastly - Flan. The flan is delicious, fluffy yet firm, topped upon a chocolate cake layer. Definately a fantastic compliment to any dining experience. -

There are plenty of Taquerias in the Outer Mission area, don't bother wasting your time at any of the others! Mexico Tipico has great Mexican food and a lot of variety.
The food is fresh and tasty. Their salsa bar usually has a couple of choices of delicious salsa.
Lastly, the people there are super friendly! I always find myself going back. -

Disclaimer: I DON'T like Mexican food... usually.
I have to admit, I'm a taco bell fan. I'd prefer to eat a bean burrito from Taco Bell then "Authentic Mexican Food." My husband, LOVES Mexican food, and I was feeling nice. So found Mexico Tipico on Yelp and its definately yummy. I ordered a pork burrito, and a quesadilla. My husband ordered his "special" burrito just the way he likes it. And boy did he like it!! I will for sure come back and order more food. Maybe Mexico Tipico, will open my eyes to the wonderful world of Mexican Food - until then Thanks Yelpers! -

To start I have to say that this is not a pretty little Mexican food restruant, its a little hole in the wall with really great food, so if you are expecting all the bells and whistle this is not the place.
I love this place because they make the best Tacos ever!!!! I always get to many and eat to much, but for lunch it is definitely a fast and affordable place to eat.
As for customer service, the cooks are usually quiet and talk amongst themselves, the guy who runs the front counter is very friendly and polite, and even jokes a little.
I usually get my meals to go, but I have eaten inside a few times and would say I think it is best to pick up your orders and eat at home.... -

I come here at least once a week with my family. We live just a few blocks away and have our fair share of taquerias vying for our local business. This one blows away the other places we've eaten at in the outer mission, and SF as a whole. The Carne Asada is cut up into to nice little pieces that crumble apart in your mouth. The Fish tacos, fried or not, are delicious. My wife never leaves without having at least one. The employees are friendly and quick to get your hot food to you.
Do go here. -

I love their food! They make awesome tacos. Great burritos and great quesadillas, but awesome tacos.
Good chips, different kinds of salsa. As a bonus, they speak english really well and always get your order right. Their meat very rarely has the chunks of fat or otherwise inedible pieces like Cancun always does. Plus they're open late and they're very nice. Just don't expect to have a conversation over the unbelievably loud Mexican soap operas that are always on. And the floor is slanted pretty bad when you sit at the tables. -

Salsas are spicy, chips are on the house, and tacos are fresh / savory.
Drinks look delicious, too.
The menu is extensive and the service is quick.
This place is perfect for late-night dining and is very inexpensive.
The one downside is the sketchiness of the location in the early morning, but going as a group is perfect.
Things to note: Service is self, being super-clean isn't the top of the agenda, and cash is the accepted method of payment.
Still, taste and filling-me-up wise, I'll definitely be back in the future!! ^^;; -

So far, sampled a few of the taqueria offerings in the neighborhood and this one is our favorite. Friendly service, colorful and clean atmosphere, and lovely telenovelas overhead.
The food is good too. Good salsa bar selection and lots of choices for your burrito or enchilada plate fix.

There are a few things that really make Mexico Tipico really special. First of all, they have fresh made chips which are delicious. Secondly, they have a good salsa bar (pretty standard salsa, really) and instead of those little portion cups there are REAL BOWLS. This is huge. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it means not having to fill up 167 of those salsa cups to feed your table of three. There are few things that make me want to cause immense pain to small children, and 1 oz. portion cups for salsa are high on the list.
The food is delicious, and the staff are very friendly and eager to help. All the ingredients are fresh, and the meat (I've tried several options) has consistently been top notch, perfectly cooked AND butchered. Nothing ruins a burrito like huge chunks of gristle, no matter how tasty the carne asada is.
Also, have to mention: Eat in the restaurant! To-go orders do not get the house made chips. And that, really, is kind of a travesty. I thought about docking a star, but then I remembered how the advent of Mexico Tipico has actually forced nearby Taqueria Menudo to step up its game. Menudo used to be amazing, had definitely gone through a slump, and now is getting better again, which I have to attribute to the arrival of new competition.Listed in: Excelsior Guide

I've had at least 10 meals from this place and they're always tasty. Menu is extensive and the service is quick. Free salsas and chips with every order is a plus. The lady at the counter is also very friendly.
Once I needed a pepper for cooking a meal at home but it was too late to go to the grocery store. I popped in Mexico Tipico and asked if I could just buy a single green pepper. They were more than accomodating with this unique request, and that wins them bonus points!
Open until 2 am on wknds. I reccomend this joint over the other Mexican restaurants in Excelsior. -

San Francisco, CA
I was really disappointed in this place. I chose it as a good spot to meet a friend because the reviews were all so good. My heart sank when I arrived... The lighting and decor were harsh and there was almost no one there. The door was open and it was cold too. But to fill the unwelcoming void, there was a very loud TV blaring some sports channel in a room with a lot of hard surfaces and reverb. Consequently it was hard to communicate; just fine if you want to watch sports while you eat though.
As for the food, the burrito we shared was poor to mediocre and the quesadilla was just nasty, too much cheese and not enough flavor.
A couple of things in the place's favor; the guy serving was nice and you can get parking right outside. but still not nearly worth the 4.5 stars it was rated at when I discovered this place. -

Being Mexican and growing up on the Border, I pride myself on knowing good Mexican food and this is good Mexican food. I used to live up the street and ate here all the time (not the best idea for my waist, but a great one for my tummy )
I now live across the city and will take any excuse and sometimes drive here in the middle of the night without one to have a super steak quesadilla and a jamaica (one of the few places in the city that serves it, believe me I've looked) I can say this is some of the best and most authentic Mexican food in the city. Don't go here for the look of the place, go for the food. Your taste buds will thank you.
The ceviche and menudo are also delicious, as is thier choco-flan, which is half flan and half chocolate cake. : ) enjoy. -

I discovered Mexico Tipico by accident. I dropped in to this hole-in-the-wall eaterie with my toddler son on a Saturday afternoon between "story time" at the Excelsior Branch library and grocery shopping on Mission. My family now never goes anywhere else for burritos, never returning to our past favorite, La Corneta, which seems like an over-priced gringo trap by comparison. For a period of time, my son would randomly howl, "Mexico TIPICOOOOOOO!"; yes, it's that good.
The restaurant scores big on both quality and value. The burritos ($4.90) are superb--large and chock full of rice, whole pinto beans, your choice of meat, and salsa and/or hot sauce, if you'd like. They are moist and flavorful, never dry the way some burritos can be. My wife often can only finish half, saving the rest for another meal.
Also excellent are the quesadilla suiza ($4.90), which are served piping hot with loads of melted swiss cheese and chunks of juicy meat morsels; and the tortas ($5.25), gigantic sandwiches with the bread hollowed out to hold a bounty of meat (roasted pork is our favorite) and vegetable toppings. If you get the latter to go, get it home quickly; the bun can become soggy in transit.
We've eaten in the restaurant's cafe-like setting several times, but typically get our food to go. If you call in your order, it's usually ready in under 10 minutes. Try it, and you too may find yourself howling, "Mexico TIPICOOOOOOOO!" -

My favorite Mexican place in the city. It's a little far out there, but definitely worth the trip. El Farolito's is the absolute staple, but I would chose this place in a heartbeat. The burritos are bitchin, the service is quick and friendly, everything tastes fresh and homemade, just like a local joint should be.
