ok so let's start this way - I'm not a fan of massage or yoga, but after I went to Metta Thai Massage I think I became a fan of both=)

The day started as one of the most freezing days in a year... when I reached the studio I though my lungs were frozen, but inside it was warm and sooo super cozy and there was already a cup of steaming hot cinnamon tea awaiting me when I stepped in.

The studio is super cozy, with a scent of something oriental but unrecognizable and at the same time very relaxing aroma. Lots of small details like Buddha statue, candles, oriental music instruments make the atmosphere very authentic.

Amy - the owner and the masseuse - is amazingly friendly and we would chat our time away if not the massage.

The massage itself was a totally new experience for me. It totally felt like I was doing yoga without using a single muscle. Amazing=) lazy way of doing yoga - just a perfect fit for me=) Sometime it almost felt like it was a dance - understanding the the moves that Amy was directing me into was part of the whole experience. It was an amazing relaxation experience!

I'm totally in love with it and will try and get back whenever I have time.

Let me tell you about my journey into Metta with Amy. First of all, let me just say that I'm a big fan of good positive intention and from the instant that I met Amy I could feel that she was all about that. Great start.

Amy was offering a promotion ($20 for 30 min Thai massage) during the month of August and, seeing a great deal, I bought some massages for my house mates as gifts. Amy offered me a sample massage, and being my first ever Thai massage experience, I didn't know what to expect. This was evidenced by me showing up with cargo shorts and a tank top. As Thai massage is done without oils it's best to have long sleeves and pants. Doh! Despite this obvious boo-boo on my part (she did instruct me to wear long clothing, I just plain forgot on the day) I was in for a treat, and then some!

Amy blessed me with a full 90-min massage complete with Ayurvedic assessment at the beginning of the session to determine which style of massage would best fit my Ayurvedic sensibilities. Then the massage began and within no time I was in total relaxation (side note: this was in stark contrast to the first non-Thai massage I ever had in 2006, which was in Bangalore India and with a man where I was so tense the entire time you could have cooked popcorn off of my back).

Amy's deep touch, careful focus, and pro technique (I was amazed at how she was able to bend parts of me with such control and force) was so refreshing, nurturing and I felt all tension dissolve from my being. The 90-mins passed by faster than I would have liked. My entire body was a huge mass of jello when the session ended, including my brain. I recall barely being able to formulate a proper sentence in my mind when I tried to thank Amy afterwards! (How embarrassment!)

The space itself is very serene, clean (but not in a sterile way), and appropriate for the massage. As it's right by Trinity-Bellwoods it's well located if you want to head over to the park afterwards and nap for the next few hours (that's what one of my house mates did after her massage as she waited for my massage to be over).

Two of my house mates had the 30-min massages with Amy that day and they too expressed how wonderful and relaxing an experience they had with her. Another, who had a massage a few days later, said he wished he'd had more than 30-mins but another client was coming in so he couldn't extend his session.

So this was my first Thai massage experience and I can't wait for the next one with Amy.

I've been getting regular therapeutic massages for several years. The first time I got one was after a leg injury, my doctor recommended a massage. I got one at the clinic where my doctor practised. The following day after the massage I was more flexible that I had ever been. However, I recall during and after the massage - sometimes for more than a day - I was experienced  pain/discomfort.

The Thai massage, on the other hand, was quite the opposite experience. During the massage, there was no discomfort. It was like an extended stretching session - I have to admit - stretching in ways that I did not think possible. I though I might break in two at some point. However, none of this was painful. An hour and a half seem to pass by relatively quickly. That evening after I got home, I felt very relaxed and was definitely in a different, but good, state of mind. I'd only wished I'd tried this when I worked in an office - a time when there was more stress in my life!

The atmosphere at Metta Thai Massage was very relaxed, quiet and comfortable. It was definitely not like a massage in a medical clinic (what I was used to). No noisy reception, sick patients or bad magazines!

Thai massage is definitely the way to go for me!
