You won't find anyone who knows wines as well as Richard at Metrovino... okay maybe you will, but I haven't and he helped me pick out an "off-dry" German riesling (one might think that would make it slightly moist, but actually it's slightly sweet).
Metrovino is stock piled with wines and alcohol from all over the world. They carry a great many different brands that you may not find in your neighbourhood liquor store. It sounds expensive - except this store is full more quality wines for a decent price than you'll find anywhere else.
If you've never been, go tonight for the second night of their Fizztival event. You get to sample some of the product, eat some yummy food and receive 10% off your purchase. If you missed Fizztival, go anyway and put the staff's knowledge and friendliness to the test. They'll pass with flying colours. -

I don't get why people get so stressed out about gift shopping. Birthdays, christmas, graduations, funerals, bar mitzvahs, anniversaries... I guarantee you can do all your shopping at metrovino. The staff are knowledgeable and always helpful with finding the right thing within your price budget.
And if you can't find anything here for your gift recipient, they're probably not worth being friends with anyway. -

Metrovino's main entrance is on 11th Ave. SW but there is also a back entrance from The Cookbook Co. Cooks store. Both employees here are incredibly enthusiastic about the wines they sell wines in general and speak highly of their owner.
According to them, MV does its best to cut out the middle man in purchasing, many of the vineyards that they carry are being dealt with directly. This ensures a more personable relationship with their supplier and they are passing this on to you with lower pricing. A lot of their merch comes from France but of course they carry wines from all around the world.
The most impressive thing I see is that they had about 12 uncorked wine bottles at their counter which is available to any customer all year round, you are able not only to buy these select wines but you are able to taste which one beforehand. Classy!
The pride is evident in service, and in education here, most of the employees are handpicked because of their past histories and most of them have moved on to more professional careers in their field.
Expect great service, good prices, very informative staff but most of all try out some wines at the store yourself for better informed choices.Listed in: Stop Whining and start Wining

Metrovino is almost exclusively where I shop for wine. I may also pick up beer and perhaps some scotch, but wine is first and foremost.
The staff are all well trained (sommeliers), friendly and completely unpretentious.
I've been able to pick up everything from reasonably priced reds or whites for any occasion to a case of ultra unique botique wines for christmas gift.
The staff will also have opened bottles for sampling and will give you their honest opinion. Even if it means they're selling you a bottle for a lower price then what you'd intitally chosen. -

Great service! Staff was very helpful. I went to Metrovino twice recently. The first time I had called ahead because I was looking for Amon-Ra, a highly sought Aussie shiraz from Barossa region made by Ben Glaetzer. Fortunately Metrovino had a couple of bottles left and I managed to get the last of them for the year for my friend in Vancouver. As far as I know, the other stores in Calgary are sold out and so are the ones in Vancouver. In any case, when I went to pick up the Amon-Ra, the staff was very friendly and helpful. I thought it was because I was making such a large purchase that the service was so impeccable.
I then went back in a couple of weeks later with my friend from Vancouver to show him where I managed to find his stash of Amon-Ra. We were in there just browsing and I was approached by at least 4-5 staff on different occasions asking whether I needed any assistance. I was VERY impressed. Even though I was just browsing that day, they didn't brush me off as someone who wasn't going to make a purchase that day so why bother to be helpful. Truth be told, I'm definitely going back to make other purchases in the future. They have a unqiue selection of wines and cater to a niche market. Most of the markups on the wines are decent, although I did find the markup on the BC wines to be unusually high. However, I believe they are one of the few exclusive wine shops here in Calgary that carry wines from the Tantalus vineyard.
Excellent service! I'm very impressed! -
