I'm a frugal traveler, but I expect a lot despite what I'm willing to pay. This is the nicest hotel I've stayed at in quite some time.

My friend and I split a room with two full-sized beds for $116 a night. There wasn't a lot of space, but that's fine since we only needed a place to sleep and to bathe and to leave our stuff and check our e-mail. The room was perfectly adequate for those functions.

The pillows were soft, the sheets and towels were clean, the internet was functional and best of all, FREE. They provided free bottled water, too. The personal coffeemaker in our room was broken, but they replaced it immediately when I reported it to the front desk.

Zippy elevators with nice Asian screens.

Didn't much care for the extra strong gingery (?) scent of the free shampoo, conditioner, or lotions. But this is hardly a dealbreaker...

Great location, within a very short walk of all sorts of cheap eats and ritzy shopping. Quick walk to my conference location, held at the Sheraton Centre. Airport Express drops off right across the street.

I made use of the business center to print out my boarding passes. No fuss at all.

Very friendly concierge who securely held my belongings for the afternoon after I checked out.

I agree, the $9/day facility fee is kind of bogus.

    I had a pleasant stay.

This hotel is average, and the rooms need updating.  I stayed here one night on business in a King Suite.  The lobby is very well-renovated, but unfortunately the rooms are not.  The lighting is very dim, the bathrooms are old, and the rooms are on the small side.  The television looked like it belonged in 1995, and the wifi signal was spotty - it barely worked from the desk, but was ok on the bed.  Not strong enough to stream video, however.  The gym equipment is fairly limited (4 old treadmills, 2 newer elliptical and a few free-weights), but the pool looked fine.

On the plus side, the service was friendly (they brought me a complimentary toothbrush), and the bed was comfortable.  The room I had was quite (21st floor, at the end of the hall), and the location is outstanding for the hospital district, and walkable to Queen, King and Front (20-25 minutes).

Overall the hotel is not up to the standards of the Soho Metropolitan, but wasn't terrible.  Average rating!

I stayed here for 3 nights, and had a very relaxing experience. Not sure why this hotel has such bad reviews. I read a few of these reviews but didn't experience these issues myself.

So my room was small, but quaint and the bed was very comfortable. Monica N reports that her room had "old, worn-out country style furniture". My room has French country furniture, and yes it was old, but it was in good condition. I must say I prefer modern decor, but this was sort of a nice change in decor for me.

Also, the linen was of good quality and nice and clean.

Also, the room was clean. I had no stains on my carpet, and the bathroom was sparkling clean.

The TV in my room was on the old side, but it worked.

I was within walking distance to several cafes and attractions, and for me parking my car was easy.

The staff were hospitable and very friendly.

This hotel was about $50 a night cheaper than others I looked at, and for saving that much money I didn't feel like I sacrificed too much on comfort.

I would stay here again. I mean, at the end of the day I had a very comfortable bed and a clean room.

OMG. That's what I get for using Hotwire. Issues? Oh yeah, plenty:

    Carpet stains.
    Old, worn-out, country-style furniture.
Hotwire rate was not that much cheaper than their regular rate.
    Room and bathroom was small.

Only redeeming quality is that internet access was free and fairly easy to connect to, although the signal was always weak.

    The quick and dirty....

Parking - the SCARRIEST I have EVER had

Rooms - Bed is great, bathroom is great, semi-updated, not that big, floors/decor are meh

Location - Fabulous! Eaton Center is like a 5 minute walk, and there are grocery stores, liquor stores, and every other store close

Staff - They have all been really nice from what I have seen

Restaurants - REALLY overpriced...I mean really...

Pool/Workout Area - Nice big heated pool (indoor) and 4 treadmills with 1 eliptical and a set of weights

    Wifi - free

In planning a 40 person business meeting with buffet dinner on a 'budget' the Metropolitan is a solid, downtown option.  The options for food run the gamut from really flavourful couscous and salmon to pasta in creamy sauces. There are options for everyone.  Available from the salad menu are some mediterrean-inspired fish salads and your basic create-your-own ceasar salad.  High marks came from the audience for the dessert- dark and white chocolate fondue with fresh fruit.
Several different rooms just down the hall from Lai Wah Heen- see my other review for this sit-down restaurant.
Certainly nothing wrong with this and close to city hall- if you're tying the knot there, you could do much worse.

Checked in on saturday afternoon. Found it easily enough. Parking was a little scary, as is all underground parking downtown.

My wife and I are here because we are attending a party at dundas square and neither of us wants to be the designated driver.

Room is decent (we got a king) and the staff were nice. Hated the shower - I need much more power and hate water that 'trickles'. We will not be using any of the facilities here though as we're heading home in a little while.

I think it was listed on our travel agecy's website as a 3+ star out of 4 hotel.
    Meh.
It's clean, but old, and the rooms are seriously small, which means it was overpriced for what you get.  I'd say no more than a 2 out of 4 hotel.
Front staff are friendly.  Didn't try the restaurants.
Underground parking lot continues the theme of the rooms- tight spaces, little room to maneuver, especially when you're driving a boat of a rental car Chyrsler 300 with the turning radius of a semi.
Location is good, a couple of block off Yonge at Dundas, walkable to most downtown touristy stuff...  Free wifi.

I did not have the seriously bad experience of reviewer Laurie,  but the $9.00 a day 'facility fee' that they only tell you about on the way out really ticked me off.  They try to justify this as having 'no hidden fees - everything is itemized' but geez, if I can't opt out of the water bottle, wifi, and exercise room, just include it in the room rate. Why make a moderately good stay into an irksome one just as I'm about to leave? Beds were comfortable, room was tiny. Bathroom was so-so but bathroom lighting terrible.  Concierge was good but front desk clerk did not seem to speak much English.  I asked for a quiet room away from elevator and ice machine and she managed to find me the one room that was squarely between the elevator and ice machine.  Fortunately noise wasn't much of a problem.  Avoid.  Try the Yorkville Marriott instead.  Comparable price, handy to metro. Much better room.

It's raining on this Sunday morning in Toronto. I'm in my nice and cozy room and am getting ready to head out for a last walk around center city Toronto. After that, it's back to Sarnia to finish up the last 2 weeks of my Canadian business trip.

With the help of the nearby Metro stop and my love of walking around, the Metropolitan is nicely located. The Theatre District, the St. Lawrence Market, the Hockey Hall of Fame, Queen Street, and even Canadian Tire are all within easy reach. And at $130, my room has been a very good value.

However, my room was located right off the elevator and right next to the ice machine. I was woken up on both nights a few times as groups were coming home and hanging out. In addition, the swimming/whirlpool area was closed for maintenance and the hotel wi-fi was inconsistent at times. On top of that, the folks down at the front desk were good at answering your questions, but didn't seem to be very engaged or efficient in moving check-ins/outs and inquires through.

I always love coming to Toronto and I hope to return soon. However when I do, I may stay somewhere else.

The rooms are small, so small you're practically walking in sideways. But with a location like this, who wants to stay in their room?

Right next to Nathan Phillips Square, so on New Year's Eve I could stumble back to my room after the festivities were over.  And in the mornings I can plop out of bed and head to Chinatown for some inexpensive dim sum.  Or if it's too cold out, you could drop some coin and indulge in high end dim sum at Lai Wah Heen, located in the hotel.  Eaton Centre, Yonge Street all within walking distance.

If possible, avoid the rooms which face the U of T dorm building across the street.  I assume they can see into the rooms so privacy is lacking.  On the other hand, it's quite a show to look in on them.

Great location, well priced, clean, nice bar, decent fitness room. That's all I need in a hotel. This one fit the bill just fine. Through Expedia we got a rate of $99/night, which is a fantastic deal!

The rooms are not as spacious as some other hotels, but we had a great view of Nathan Phillips Square and the CN tower.

Just a short walk from trendy Queen St. West or Yorkville, I highly recommend staying here, so you can splurge on fabulous fashion finds with your savings!

READ THE SMALL PRINT on your reservation and the card you sign at check in.  My colleagues and I had 6 days scheduled to work in Toronto, but needed to check out on the second day.  We were informed (by the powerless desk clerk) that we could leave, but we would be charged for all of the days on the reservation.  Long story short, even the general manager of the hotel would not budge with this policy.  At all levels they were condescending and disinterested in "hospitality."

I have been a business traveler for 25 years, and have checked out early of countless hotels, and have never faced this policy or level of horrendous service.  It would have been very easy for them to state their policy, and then graciously remove the extra charges, as a thoughtful level of service.  I said to one of the assistant managers that I've stayed at hotels from the Hampton Inn to the Ritz Carlton and have never heard of such a policy, and she said, "well, madame, then you should have stayed there."  She said that if they didn't have this policy, their hotel would have been out of business a long time ago.

The lobby is uncomfortable and outdated, the exercise room is nothing like the photos (uncomfortable room with old equipment, so we didn't use it), the rooms are disgusting and worn out, the heat doesn't work, etc.

When we checked out, we were surprised to get an extra $8 "facility" charge each day (plus tax for that charge).  We asked what it was, and the desk clerk sheepishly said,  for "bottled water in the room, fitness room, and internet."  We had no idea we were being charged for this.  We had never used the internet or fitness room.

The only good thing about this hotel was the restaurant.  While too expensive, the food was excellent and the waiter we dealt with was extremely professional, friendly, efficient.

The Bell Captain was never around when we needed him to get our car, or to help guests through the people begging for money.  One evening I had to ask a security guard to escort me to my room, because there were drug addicts in the driveway who followed me to the elevator.

We ended up having to stay in Toronto for the duration of our reservation, because we could not incur the thousands of dollars our work-team would have been charged for leaving early.  We had other colleagues who arrived after a few days, and we encouraged them to stay in another hotel.  They were very happy at the Marriott on Bloor, and paid less per night than we did at the very awful Metropolitan.

This is a light overview of how awful this hotel is.  I hope you are sufficiently deterred from staying here.

I wish this hotel was better. It has great potential. It certainly is nice but every time I've stayed there (3 times) there seems to be something wrong (light fixture broke, shades don't close properly, etc). The acoustics in the hotel could be better.

Pluses: it is quite convenient, clean, has a dishwasher, washer & dryer in the rooms, and of course the wonderful kitchenette. The rooms are a bit small but still manageable. Staff is helpful when needed but otherwise a bit dismissive. The restaurant is fantastic, tho and I highly recommend it.

We stayed here in Aug. 2009 after booking on an on-line discount site.

The rate was fantastic, we definitely got a bargain.

The hotel is in a great location. Shops and eateries are nearby and Queen St. and King St. are just a short stroll away.

The room was just fine, we were accommodated a with a high level just as requested.

The fitness room was a bit odd as it was within the same space as the indoor pool. This made running on the treadmill like running in a sauna. It was warm, stuffy and smelled like chlorine - one cannot escape.

Outside of the pool and fitness room is a balcony with chairs and lounges. Perfect for reading a book and basking in the sun. Very cool views too.

The elevators always seems crowded and often there was a line of people with luggage who had just checked in or people with bags from shopping. This made for tight times on the elevator.

The staff were just fine, phone calls to the concierge were answered quickly and we were able to check in a bit earlier than we were scheduled to. They were accommodated and service oriented.

Overall, a great hotel, nice location and good value. I did not find it to be particularly romantic or posh but it was just what we needed for our stay.

Where the heck have I been? Sorry I havent been around lately ....ANYWAYS.....

This place was great.  One of my best friends got married here recently and they were so accommodating.   My friend got the bridal suite of "Paris" and it was like an apartment! haha I wish I could live here.

They made up the hall and ceremony rooms so nice and presentable they really did a good job.

The restaurant in the hotel catered the wedding for a 10-course meal and the food was DELISH!
nice authentic chinese food and fresh and hot. Everything was just perfect for a perfect evening.

The key here is the comfortable beds. Everything else sucks. People are unfriendly, rooms are claustrophobicly small, food is not great, the sinks / tub do not drain, and the rooms are not well cleaned. I will likely never come back again. However, the beds are pretty good.

I went here for a wedding. My experience is strictly based on the food. The wedding had an 11 course traditional meal, consisting of a lot of pork, chicken, lobster and crab. Me being a vegetarian, I really lucked out.

All the dishes looked pretty good, and fresh. The roasted pig had very crispy skin, but the meat had a lot of fat.  My veggie dishes were absolutely delish. I had spring rolls, dumplings, tofu, greens and mushrooms, corn soup, noodles just to name a few dishes.

We ended off the meal with red bean soup, mango mousse cake (the wedding cake), and some other chinese desserts.  The wait staff and hotel staff were all extremely friendly and accommodating.   Overall an extremely filling and satisfying meal. If you're looking for a place to have a banquet or event, the Metropolitan is a pretty good choice!

Not a bad stay at all, except for our door location right near the elevators which made for a fun Saturday night trying to get sleep while listening to hyped up club goers chatting and elevator dings. Not the hotel's fault but a design flaw for sure. Bad architect, bad! The room was clean and service was fine. Great rate and right in the middle of the city centRe. That's right, they spell it R-E in Candada not E-R.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here on a weekend getaway for its central location and the low prices.  I can't say we were disappointed given the bargain price we were able to get, but I can also say I would probably look elsewhere for a place to stay in Toronto the next time I'm in town.

The staff was pretty friendly, but not overly accommodating. The rooms were pretty archaic and could benefit from a renovation.  The views were okay.  I will say the room was pretty big for what we paid.

We didn't eat at the restaurants, but they looked pretty good.

Overall, I would stay here again, but only if I was able to get a room at a discount rate as I did last summer.

Nice hotel located by City Hall and offering travelers a good buy in downtown Toronto. Rooms are comfortable, yet small and bathrooms need modernization. I booked this hotel on http://Hotels.com.  The pictures make the hotel look nicer than it really is.  It is on a rather yuck little street, but is around the corner from the Eaton Centre.  The front desk staff was rather rude/dismissive and the first/original room I got was unacceptable- I couldn't even roll my luggage in due to the configuration and furniture, the room was hot & damp which was strange since the weather was about 45 degrees outside. I complained to the front desk and the manager gave me another room that was better....although it was strange that throughout my entire stay that their was a food tray from the previous occupant outside the room. Oh, and food/drinks are ridiculously priced. Parking is $21 a night.  The bathroom has zero counter space too. On the positive side the bath products are Molton Brown and bed was comfortable.

Overall, the Metropolitan Hotel delivered a very 3-star experience. Average accommodations, convenient location, and fairly inexpensive. There were a couple of things though that really ruined my stay. The biggest one was the complimentary town car service. The driver was such a jerk! He didn't even say hello and didn't speak to me except to tell me that he'd be dropping me off a block away from where I was going because it was outside of his perimeter. I gave him a tip despite his rudeness because I am too nice. The next morning I got delayed in the elevator and was a few minutes late. The guy flat out refused to drive me. I'd much rather that the Metropolitan Hotel not offer a "service" if they are going to do it badly. The other thing that could have been better is the remote control. I'm not taking off a star because the TV was old as dirt, but because the remote was crusty and dirty. I didn't want to touch it, but then my aunt, who is a flight attendant and has stayed in tonnes of hotels, made a brilliant suggestion to take the shower cap from the bathroom and wrap the remote in it. Problem solved, but c'mon Metropolitan, that's just nasty.

This hotel exemplifies the qualities of Canada, which is revisiting past trends and fashions, like the 80's. The elevators are delightfully tacky. The parking garage terrified me the first time driving down to park my car, it's a very cramped parking garage. I didn't think the rooms were small as other reviewers did, but I agree facing the apartments across the street does make the hotel lack privacy. But I also do not mind showing off what I have to pervy peeping toms or tomettes. The hot tub in the pool area is ridiculously hot, like scalding. The pool on the other hand is cool and refreshing. I found the hot tub more tolerable after being in the pool, as opposed to before the pool. The snack machines serve their purpose. Except juice is a dollar more than soda. I also did not have an ice machine on my floor and had to go to the floor above or below mine which was rather annoying. But I would stay here again the price and location are excellent.

Nice, affordable hotel a little bit of a walk to my conference but it's clean Toronto, so it's not so bad. Eaton Centre is just a couple of blocks away and there's a Staples Business Depot just around the corner. Supposedly, the best Chinese restaurant is in this hotel but it's very pricey so I skipped it until my expense account goes up. Nice bar/restaurant downstairs with really nice bartenders and plenty of Mill St. and other beers available. Room is OK size. Not huge but doable. Full Rogers basic cable on a basic set. Internet is supposed to be free but it isn't. That's the problem with this place. There's a lot of hidden charges here so you really have to be careful with the bill. You do get free WiFi on the first and second floors so I used that a lot. Gym is OK. Not great but it's not used by many of the customers so there usually isn't a wait at any hour. Morning offer a complimentary limo to various points downtown. I like this hotel but with all the hidden charges, I just can't love it like I do the Westin.

Booked a one night stay at the hotel that was for their Wi-Suite. Greeted at the door by an attentive and friendly doorman. The lobby was nice but does not exude luxury or upscale. Had a suite on the 14th (actually 13th) floor that was right near the elevators----basically 2 adjoining rooms were they removed the bed from the first room and replaced it with a sofa and desk/chairs. Room looked old and tired and definitely not what I expected but this is an "historic" hotel so if you like that when traveling this room might be for you. Wi console was available in the sitting room and had Wi-Sports and Wi-Fit programs available----battery was running low on the remote so I'm not sure if they check it or wait until someone reports it to have died. Bed was quite comfortable but duvet was extremely warm and we had to have the a/c on all night which was very loud and didn't necessarily cool us that much. Location is good just right off Dundas Street and close to Eaton Centre and Dundas Square (TO's version of Times Square). Didn't eat at the hotel as it looked overpriced but there is a decent Chinese restaurant just across the hotel called Garden that is quite reasonable and good. Overall, I wouldn't stay here again given the high price as there are definitely better looking hotels in town----more for people who like to stay in older/historic hotels.
