Review from Freddy O.
I've lived nearby other Menards, and there something about them that I personally don't click with it. It's from how the store looks, to their layout, their employees, and I seriously can't stand their parking lots of the entrance door being 1 mile apart from the exit doors. If I'm carrying 100lbs of something, you sure bet I don't want to do a triathlon to get to my car with it.
They may have better prices on some stuff, but more often than not end up finishing my purchases at one of their biggest nearby competitors. One major downside of their services is how they refer you to a local business to have something installed. No, no and more no. I want to make my transaction with one person and get it done with it. I don't want to have to call another person to get it involved to install something at my house.
Not my favorite hardware store, but it doesn't mean that I wouldn't consider going here...I just have to be reminded that they exist. -

i wish i could leave 0 stars, such rude managers, rude front desk staff, who think they can treat customers with no respect and think they can change policies when they decide, terrible service. i will never shop their again.
dont stop there, they bait and switch on products from their ad.
go to home depot or lowes, stay away! -

Nice staff, great deals for the house, and maybe you will even find something you never thought would be here? ha! They also have an assortment of nuts and dried fruits for snacks. Yum :)

I was going to rate this one a one star but one bad apple shouldn't ruin it for the rest. The guy that works in lighting the young heavy set one is just plain rude. No people skills what's so ever. If I knew what I was looking for I wouldn't have bothered you. However, a simple question about a product shouldn't make you upset and make me feel sorry that I asked. You chose to work there you filled out the application it was your choice not mine. So grow up and do your job. Because of you I now drive up the street to the home depot. Attitude is for the streets not for customer service.

All of the customer service associates were very helpful here. The store is clean and well-organized. They have a great selection of products and I found everything I was looking for!

Huge place. So huge they are subletting some of the empty lot. But if you are a tool time fan then this would be your bastion of heaven.
Friendly staff; pretty good comeraderie as well when the one guy helping me didn't know something he asked his coworker walking by and directed him. Alot of cool things in here. Huge parking lot so if you have problems with parking...well then we have something in common with bad luck. -

A nice bog box hardware store. This store has everything plus you can do basic grocery shopping too!
Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Definitely recommend this place for anyone who needs to get stuff fixed! -

I was always thinking that Menard's is better than Home Depot, but not anymore...
Just recently I have purchased light fixture combo for one of my customers, but I noticed that the base of it is slightly too large, so I went back to the store to return it and purchase smaller one. I did pay cash for the original purchase, but I did not save the receipt for it.
In the store I was told that instead of the regular price I would receive the lowest price the item was sold for. This is pretty much new item and I never seen it on sale, but I was told that this item was sold for fraction of the cost I did pay for it and that is how much I will get back for the item.
I my opinion all of the items they have in stock, have been on sale somewhere in US (one item or few) Imagine how much money they get within US from you for nothing. In my opinion this is plain cheating! On single item they screw hundreds of customers out of their money. I bet you that pretty much every item in the store is set up just like that.
Some attorney should think about fixing this up! -

I will not use this store again. They have milk and cookies in their but can not tell you where your order is at. With my print out from them it says estimated delivery date th 13th. Now their computer says the 19th, I ask "Who notifies the customer" and with that things got real bad real fast. Now they are looking for my stuff all over the country and can not locate the truck that it is on. I say go to HOME DEPOT where they know where your order is.

I hate this Menard's also and after a shitty experience will never EVER shop at Menard's.
I'll try to keep this short. I was there with my Dad, purchasing tools and paint. Spent about $500. That year, I was in this store very often. Always spending at least $3-500. On this occasion their security decided to stop me on my way out. Citing that they were watching me and saw me put a tool or something in my pocket. I will always remember this day. A colored person never forgets days like this.
When you have been racially profiled.
I remember from the moment I walked in the store, I was being followed and for no good reason. Two lost prevention guys following me from aisle to aisle. Just knowing these idiots would try something I stuck next to my Dad like flypaper. We stopped in the screws and nails, aisle to look for a particular screw needed for a cabinet door. Depending on the size needed, they offered individual specialty screws in their own little baggies. They didn't have the size I needed. At no time did I pick up any screws.
So we buy all of our merchandise and walk out. At the doorway I am stopped by 4 loss prevention guys and two others that were following me the entire time. Without any mention to my father they whisk me into a secured room. Putting me in handcuffs, right in my fathers view. (Parents, just know that no person at a store is allowed to check you or your child without you or another person present. You can & should opt that a Police officer is called)
I wish I knew this.
Two guys put me face against a wall and said they were going to pat me down. It was winter and I was wearing a bulky winter jacket.
Both of them stuck their hands in my pockets quickly, while doing a half ass pat down. They told me they would pat me down, NOT put their hands in my pockets. This gave them opportunity. One guy leaves the room.
At this point, there is only one loss prevention officer in the room checking my person and jacket.
!! A single baggy of two screws, price $.15 cents in my pocket!
This guy calls me a thief and says they have to keep me in custody till a manger can come and work out the paperwork or decide on calling the Police.
ARE THEY FUCKING KIDDING!! 15 cent screws!! We just spent $500 dollars on merchandise and you want to say I was stealing!
SO this asshole gives me the whole talk about why stealing is wrong.. etc etc. Outside these fucks are keeping my Dad in the dark about what's going on. This guy opens the door to allow people leaving the store to see me in handcuffs seated.
As a born American, when this kind of bullshit happens to you at a store which you frequent, close to home, it strikes a fucking nerve.
The lost prevention guys say that they don't know where the manager is. SO, they want to parade me through the store with handcuffs on and with an entourage of 5 security guys. My Dad in tow, yelling, asking these clowns why they would do this shit!
To get out of the store, they said I had to sign some paper stating that I stole from Menard's company and I had to pay them a fine!!
Most of the loss prevention guys were White American, one guy was interracial, maybe White / Back.
So this shit shouldn't of happened. Had I known the law, I would not have sat through all that shit and dealt with that embarrassment. Shit like this has happened to me before. Sometimes even though you want to scream and yell, cause really, this doesn't happen to AMERICANS..., what can a colored person do? Menard's loss prevention needs to fill a monthly quota of people caught in the act. They created a reason for me to fill that quota. If I had my Dad in the room during that search they preformed. And he witnessed them having their hands in my pocket before they announced to me that they were going to search, that could have been used in a law suit.
Since the time this happened to me, I have heard from a few people that something similar happened to them at this particular store.
I always wanted to put this out on the net, for people to know. But, also didn't want to share this embarrassment with the world. People need to know. Parent's need to know how to protect their kids. -

I hate this Menards - This has to be one of the WORST Menards in the entire Midwest!
I few days before X-Mass I came here with my mom because she wanted some more lights. So we found some, added a 50-pound bag of salt for the sidewalks and a few holiday related things to the cart. She paid for her stuff and everything was fine until were by the exit.
Some employee guy comes up to me and says:
Employee: "hey can I talk to you over here for a minute?"
Me: "sure what's up?"
Him: "one of the employees said that you were by the DVD's and that you picked one up, but when he went over there, it wasn't on the shelf."
Me: "what are you saying exactly?"
Him: "well I notice you didn't buy a DVD so..."
Me: "are you accusing me of something?"
Him: "would you mind emptying your pockets?"
Now keep in mind 5 things.
1) I was never even by the DVD section
2) I was wearing a fairly distinctive outfit I doubt I could be mistake for anyone else(a large Russian Naval hat and sport pants and green jacket)
3) Again I wasn't by the DVD's, but even if I was when people shop don't they pick items up and sometimes decide later the don't want them and could possibly put them down somewhere else in a store.
4) Over the past 4 years doing home remodeling I've spent maybe $5000 there. (At that specific store)
5) I was a retail store manager for several years, so I agreed to soothe his concerns. I emptied out all my pockets, every single one --- ear muffs, gloves, cell phone, wallet, glasses, note pad, (everything)
and here's what went down:
Me: "satisfied?"
Him: "we must have been mistaken"
(although his tone suggested "I'm sorry I couldn't bust you")
Me: "yes you were, I wasn't even by the DVD's"
Him "oh, ok"
He walks away and I look at my mom, and note the fact he didn't even apologize. Then loud enough for him to hear it I tell her to return everything we just purchased. I then proceed toward him.
Me: "you know, I think you owe me an apology"
Him again "we must have been mistaken"
Me: " Actually I'd like an apology from the employ the falsely accused me of stealing"
Him: "that's not going to happen"
Me: "What's the store Managers name?"
Him: "I'm the store manager" (as he stupidly points to his name tag)
Me: "ok, what's your boss's name, the district manager?"
Him: "I don't have that information."
Me: "so you don't know who the person is that comes and checked on your store?"
Me: "what about your regional manager?"
Him: "That's corporate information"
Me: "what's your customer service 800 number?"
Him: "We don't have one"
Me: "what's your last name?"
Him: "I can't give that out"
Me " so you're telling me that one of your employees is either incredibly stupid or flat out lying about witnessing me steal something. That you're the store manager an are refusing to apologize to me. That' you don't know who the District manager is and can't reveal the Regional managers name. And that there is NO 1-800 number?"
Him: "yep, and I did apologize" (as he walks away from me)
Me: You're an A-hole
And I did get his name and I did write a letter to the CEO directly! (not that I expect anything of it)
Sorry to rant, but I am NEVER going to Menards again, EVER!!! -

I'm realizing I live in a cool part of Chicago because I'm so close to so many suburbs and, therefore, proximity to many stores that don't exist within the city limits. Menards is like the middle class man's Home Depot. It's been around forever as a good old hardware store -it has a good selection like its competitors, but there is something more down to earth about it. This was a very nice location. I found everything I was looking for. The staff was friendly and the parking lot is huge. Glad I found it -I had to mapquest it but it's really not too far from Rogers Park. Maybe a scenic 15 min drive or so.

This store is pretty bad. I used to work there and can tell you that 90% of the employees there do not have a clue about whatever you are asking them. It doesn't matter if you are asking for the location of a specific product or if it is a technical question, chances are the answer you are about to get is made up. The only good thing about Menards is that they are so dumb, they will take back almost anything as a return. While working there I witnessed cashiers returning stuff that we did not even sell. Pathetic yet funny. And referring to the store security and management mentioned in other reviews, its not an exaggeration. Those guys are so brainwashed into believing Menards is great that they shit on everyone, including the employees.

I really like this store and tend to prefer it to Lowe's and Home Depot when shopping for home improvement items. The staff is usually a bit more knowledgeable than the nearby stores of the other two chains and prices are typically lower than both. I am not a contractor, but from appearance I'd say it's a bit weaker than Home Depot in construction supplies. A little stonger in other areas. It sells more peripheral items than the other two chains but does not have as large a plant selection. Also more home items which are not directly related to home improvement tasks, e. g., candles, picture frames, cleaning supplies, etc. As other reviewers mentioned it is very large but I have not found it to be intimidating.

This Menards was recently built and it is HUGE. I have never seen such a big Menards store. They carry every maintenance items imagnineable, plus many more items. They have school supplies, canned goods, and lots of other items too. I always seem to get lost whenever I go in here, but the employees are really great here at helping me find my way around.

This is another company where I remember them by their commericals. That man who SCREAMS Menards about 1,000 times at the top of his lungs comes to mind right now. I have to turn the volume way down on the remote whenever he's on TV! Yikes. The store is huge, the selection is great, but I get angry at stores like this (and Home Depot) because they run all the little guys out of business. I prefer the old fashioned hardware and home improvement type stores. But for those that need bigger, here's the store for you.

Gotta say, this store needs some quality control when it comes to how they train their employees. I worked retail through high school and college and no matter how irritating or rude a customer was, I never ever treated them the way they treat average customers.
Don't expect any sort of respect from the people who work here, even if you're asking simple questions like "where can I find ______" and "can you please point me in the direction of ______." You can expect to be barked at by the guy in the garden center. You can expect to be mumbled at by the kid straightening shelves. You can also expect to be completely ignored by the girls at the cash register while they ring you out. They may not even bother to give you a total or tell you when it's OK to swipe your credit card.
Most importantly, don't expect to find a helpful or apologetic supervisor. Not gonna happen. You'll get a high school kid who hands you a customer complaint form and tells you to mail it to corporate. No apologies either.
Screw this place. -

!WARNING! DO NOT BUY FINCH OR ANY BIRD SEED FOR OUTDOOR HERE!!! I bought some Finch Food for my finches and turned out the bag was infested with Indian Meal Moths! I will warn all buyers to avoid buying any bird seeds from this store as most of their supply are infested with meal moths. I went back to the store and complained to the manager that my condo was infested with meal moths and when tracking down the exact brand, I saw more moths flying around their bags.

Another really big hardware store in my area. It is so big that it can be hard to get around. I think teh employees don't really know it that well too because if you ask them they usually will point you to the wrong direction. I prefer smaller stores where the customer servce is better.
