Review from sarah l.
After an entire day of eating & drinking in the 905/716, Miks S, Eric M and I stopped at Memphis Fire in Winona after my Dad (Bruce L)'s insistent nagging. We ordered the coney dog, the brisket and the pulled pork - it was all great. They even offered to make Mike's beer a Steamwhistle float - I can't believe he declined.
The amazing:
- Our waiter was pretty fantastic. He was friendly, got our order perfectly accurate (including cutting our hotdog in thirds so we could share) and made Eric an off-menu float which he seemed more excited about than Eric. He was beyond awesome.
- Rootbeer float - best I've ever had
The good:
- The buns were toasted (this is KEY)
- Excellent pulled pork - best I have had in Ontario
- Great brisket
- Great baked beans
- Fun conversation with the owner about Stoney Creek Dairy
The okay:
- Apple slaw was sort of meh
- I did not love the coney dog as much as the boys did
The only problem:
- no cornbread - the biscuits were completely acceptable - they're good, I still liked them, but... I like cornbread more.
I would love to come back here again - I would order the pulled pork (which comes on 2 buns - 2 regular sized humans could easily split this) with the beans and the biscuits.
Inexpensive - 2 floats, 1 beer, 3 sandwiches with tax and tip = $50

- Cash, Creditcard, Debit... but does not accept mastercard
- 1.25h drive from downtown Toronto -

A little over a year ago, I would have given this a 5 Star review, however, in the past year it has been in steady decline. The food is still, for the most part, excellent, but there has been a steady decline in service and atmosphere.
The restaurant is incredibly busy. This was not a problem when they used to take reservations, but they no longer do so during peak business times. While I would expect this from chain, low quality, food-trough restaurants, I did not from here. While this, alone, is not enough to lose a full star, the fact that there is nowhere to wait, or even go to while waiting, makes this an unpleasant experience.
The ribs are outstanding. However, because of the limited quantities, it is very difficult to get any. Again, you used to be able to reserve them ahead of time by calling and planning your visit. Last time I tried I was told no. Their southern fried chicken, like their ribs, are a signature dish that is offered in limited quantities on weekends, so you know to expect the potential of not receiving any (especially after waiting in line). However, on my last three visits there was always something else missing from the menu, incuding hot dog buns one evening. While having a lack of menu items one time is excusable, having this happen visit after visit is not. I am not alone in this, friends of mine have experienced this as well.
The service used to be impeccable. However, as they have become busier and more popular this has dropped off. The service is spotty at best and at other times almost surly. I have actually witnessed a waiter yell at a customer, and friends of mine have witnessed similar outbursts. This is not a one time thing.
The atmosphere needs some work too. A lot of work. In the summer your meal is riddled with flies buzzing across your face while you eat and your clothes always smell like deep-fryer when you leave. I absolutely love the greasy spoon, family-friendly diner feel to the restaurant, but it needs ventilation and air conditioning.
The owners are friendly and fun and value the family experience. The food, when it is there, is fantastic, unfortunately it is the rest that has me no longer going back like I used to. All of these things, if only a one time experience, would not cause me to give such a low review to a restaurant that has some decent quality, but the repeated nature of it, with the steady decline of the customer coming first, really has left me wanting for this particular restaurant. -

My new favourite place!
Memphis opened up about a year ago. Passed by it many times and never thought much about it. That was until I was cherry picking in the area and turned around in their parking lot - one whif of the smoker in the back, and I was hooked!! What have I been missing out on??
The place reminds me of a place Guy Fieri would pop into on Triple D (in fact, they had triple D playing in the background when I was there...playful).
The menu is dedicated to Southern Comfort Food. If you like that kind of food, then this is the place for you my friend. Biscuits, pulled pork, sneaky cheeseburgs, beef brisket....fantastic! Everything is smoked out back in their huge stainless steel smoker. Depending on the cut of meat, the pork is smoked no less than 14 hours and beef no less than 20 hrs. You can taste that difference.
I find the prices to be exteremely reasonable and the portions generous. Apparently, Memphis is rated #2 restaurant in Hamilton and #4 in Ontario on urbanspoon (blah on urbanspoon) so they are doing something right.
Simply put - i'm a big fan of Memphis! I have a feeling they are going to be seeing a lot of me around there...lol.
As an aside, there is an executive 9-hole golf course behind the restaurant. I'm not sure if it is affiliated with the restaurant or not. It's not much to look at (really - it looks like a peach orchard more than a golf course), but still, I am intruigued to give it a try - i'm sure the price is reasonable. Perhaps they should consider a golf-pulled pork combo? :) -

Memphis Fire is not exactly traditional BBQ (from what I understand), but the chefs are inspired.
I've enjoyed the slider platter (BBQ beef brisket, BBQ pulled pork, and gourmet burger) and the Sneaky Cheese burger (a burger revelation).
My only negative was that they were out of BBQ beef brisket (c'mon, y'all!).
This place is a real find in Hamilton and Niagara.
I did not see cornbread on the menu.
Must go back and try their shakes. -

Memphis Fire BBQ nailed it. Not sure how much more tradional you can get. You can tell the owners/chefs have a passion for what they are doing. I visited MFBBQ this past saturday with a couple of friends and our expectations were exceeded to say the least. Great atmosphere - every table was taken, we had to wait just 5 minutes...we would have waited an hour. The servers were awesome...very knowledgable and friendly, making menu suggestions. Our server notified us right up front what they were out of which was great. GOOD BBQ PLACES RUN OUT OF FOOD. It's just how it is. They slow smoke their brisket for 28 hours. 28! You can't just go "throw another brisket on the smoker".
The BBQ was the best I've had. The bark on the brisket was perfect. Their smoked chicken wings were perfect. Coney island fries...awesome. We talked with one of the owners for 20 minutes...he told us that they don't even put their ribs on the menu because they sell out so fast. GO EARLY!
I am personally in the restaurant business and it is so great to see a family restaurant with such passion have success. MFBBQ will be a regular destination for myself, family and friends.
(Also, make sure you order the "Mr. Famous" burger....its not on the menu)
