Yum! I love BBQ! I didn't even know this place was here, but we drove past it and had to go in!!
I had pulled pork, and my friend had ribs! So we tried both, and they were awesome!!
I thought it was a little overpriced. But! I'm beginning to realize that I think all food is expensive in Canada, and I think I know why.... OH YEAH!! Because it is!! -

Sometimes when a one-stand operation gets successful and starts opening multiple locations, quality take a nose dive (cough...Cupcakes...cough). Happily, this is not the case with Memphis Blues, whose barbecue platters are just as eat-with-your-hands tasty high up in the nosebleed section of North Van. I 'd like to nominate the Elvis Platter to National Treasure status, that's just how good it is... sausages, brisket, pulled pork, fall-off-the-bone chicken and ribs, with vegetables safely confined to potato salad (not my cup of BBQ sauce, but looks authentic enough) and a surprisingly good coleslaw.
I didn't much care for the "authentic" unsweetened ice tea, and I do think the booze prices are a bit high, even if one of the owners of the chainlet is a sommelier and has gotten lots of raves in the foodie press for pairing wines with barbecue. A cheap-and-cheerful selection of vino would be appreciated.
But back to that Elvis Platter - with just two of us to pig out on it, there were plenty of leftovers to pack up, which is DIY, by the way. It's generally a self-service operation, but the staff is super-friendly; the young guy who busses tables was really cool and everyone gave us a warm welcome and goodbye.
By the way - who says decent places to eat on the North Shore are rare? Why I oughta.... a) beat your backside with a kayak paddle or b) make a Yelp list or c) play a continuous loop of the song "The Crawl" by Spirit of the West while we re-enact it. That'll learn ya.Listed in: North Shore Eats

Well-priced meat, speedy service, with a free side of tastlessness.
I have been to many a BBQ joint in my years (cue the montage) and have found that in general, it's pretty fricken hard to do ribsbadly. Until now. I went for dinnr at Memphis and came away very disappointing. The service was fast and the portion plentiful...but maybe it ws TOO fast. The ribs I had ordered came out after just 3 minutes -- and how can you cook meat that quickly? They tasted like they had been reheated and even liberal dosages of sause couldn't obscure my disappointment.
Side dishes were good, beer was tasty. But I wouldn't go back. Highly disappointing. -

Good for takeout for the family ... healthier (a little) then a bucket of KFC. But the proportions are huge and food is decent.
Possibly the heaviest meal your body will ever witness - taste buds will thank you, but your heart will kill you :) The food is actually pretty good, sometimes the pork is a bit dry and the ribs can be better (meat should melt off the bone). The cornbread is good (and again very heavy) and the brisket is the best (did I say it was heavy yet?)
... so all in all, good food that is well suited when you feel like pigging out - for those not overly concerned about life expectancy ... go for it! -

I've been a long time fan of the Memphis Blues over on West Broadway so I'm really happy they opened a branch in North Vancouver....where decent places to eat are rare. Memphis does GREAT BBQ. Really decent pulled pork and if you really want to pig out....get the notorious Elvis Platter. 3 of us did it once and had leftovers for days....it comes with a whole BBQed chicken PLUS all the meaty items Memphis is famous for (and beans, coleslaw, beans, potato salad and corn bread. Good beer selection and bourbon is a specialty.

Do you like man food? I do, I love man food. Give me steak and potatoes and I am a happy lady. All those in agreement, continue reading.
Before Memphis Blues I don't think I had ever encountered this type of Southern Barbecue. Vancouver is so infiltrated with the yoga and sushi type of person that it is hard to find somewhere that truly caters to my love of carbs (well, outside of McDonalds of course).
I would tell everyone about my obsession of meat and barbecue sauce who would listen...when I was referred to Memphis Blues. Upon walking into the establishment, you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. The place is dark and dingy, playing sounthern bluesy music with nostalgic visuals wherever you look. The grumpy looking line cooks help further paint the picture that you have entered the Mississippi in the 1960's.
Upon receiving the menu, it is smattered with all types of unusual meats (cornish game hen, pulled pork, smoke sausage). To test them all out, they have something called the "Elvis" platter, which,.if my corny humour serves me right, means it is the "King" of meals at Memphis Blues (makes sense since it is about $60).
As far as the fare goes, my personal favourite is the pulled pork sandwich. This is the creme de la creme of pulled pork sandwiches. I have yet to taste one better. I have tried everywhere I can get my grubby hands on one (Dix, Section 3, Yaletown market, etc) and this is by far the best in Vancouver. It is always fresh and tender, and the bbq sauce has a unique appley sweetness to it. The only thing holding it back for me is the way you order.
Memphis Blues is small in itself and feels quite cramped. Add having to line-up and pre-order your meal and it gets pretty crowded in there. While I can appreciate that after a complete pants-unbuttoning carb-fest, there is no way anyone is even moving to pay their bill, I think a traditional style estaurant where you are waited on would add to the southern comfort vibeinstead of making you feel like you are southern cattle being prodded through the line at the till.
Overall I love this place for some great and unique tasting barbecue goodness!Listed in: Top Restaurants

"You'd think they've got it pretty easy being one of the only BBQ places in Vancouver but they have really good BBQ. They obviously take it pretty seriously and it shows with the great quality. It's a little expensive but worth it if you're a BBQ fan (if you think BBQ is something you made on your gas grill, don't bother). Great food, real iced tea and some good beers on tap. I had been searching for BBQ for the longest time after coming up from Texas and I couldn't believe it when I finally found this place (I really did smell it from a block away and actually did follow my nose). Good for take out too when you want to have a down home BBQ dinner at home, just make sure you don't put the bag on your lap unless you're wearing grease proof pants (sorry Ricardo).."
