My husband and I were looking for a place to have breakfast on our way home from the Outer Banks. We didn't want to stop on the island, so we started looking off the island. What a find Mel's Diner was! Great breakfast, great service and great prices! This will be our post-vacation breakfast stop from now on.

I was glad to find this place on Yelp, as we are not from the area. They had very good food, and the service was fantastic. We ordered the special fried jumbo shrimp and fries, and upon recommendation we had to try one of their shakes. Strawberry was awesome. We also ordered the southwestern grilled chicken salad, which was very good too. We tried the peanut-butter pie also, and it was like a peanut-butter chocolate chip cookie topped with peanut butter/cream cheese/marshmallow. It was SWEET but very tasty. I'd recommend this place too.

On our way back home from Nags Head, there was a ton of traffic (not to mention that EVERY breakfast joint in the Outer Banks is uber crowded Saturday mornings [day everyone leaves]), we hit a bunch of traffic and decided to pull off into Mel's Diner. We were all ready to eat, as we didn't eat in the morning (again, our plan of stopping at Grits Grill was the same great idea everyone else had Sat morning), we figured this spot would be great for breakfast.
We turn in, and the hostess said, Sorry, we are only serving lunch. I was heartbroken. But we still ate there, as the traffic was death, and we were starving to death (lots of death, I know).
I got the Oreo Cookie milkshake to drink, and let me tell you, it was divine. I didn't want it to end. It had the perfect blend of oreo cookie flavor, along with vanilla ice cream flavor. So so good. I ordered the chicken fried chicken (why the double talk? who knows). It was amaaaazing. The pieces of chicken were very juicy and had a wonderful flavor to them. Great crunch. Not a fan of the sawmill gravy (luckily I got it on the side). If I could order it right now, I would.
I'd say the staff was friendly, the food came out quickly, and I was overall very satisfied. The CFC was 9 bucks, the milkshake was 4.29. A little inflated for the milkshake, but I suppose that is because it is on the way to/from a popular tourist spot. The minus star is because no breakfast all day.Listed in: I've Been Here Once - Travels!

My boyfriend and I stopped here on the way to Nags Head for some lunch. Cute little retro diner with 1950s formica countertops, Elvis memorabilia, old fashioned milkshakes, etc.
I was pleasantly surprised they had a gardenburger on the menu although the salads looked REALLY good, not what I'd expect from a place like that! My boyfriend had a huge club sandwich and a chocolate shake. The fries were decent. Pretty cheap, too! -

As the others, we were on our way back from an OBX holiday and were hungry for breakfast. We took a chance and stopped at Mel's. We were glad we did because the breakfast was solid, the service was friendly and attentive, they had high chairs and the restaurant was clean. I had the vegetable omelet with grits and a biscuit and it was very good - vegetables crisp and the grits went well with it. My husband was happy with his pancakes and the girls enjoyed their scrambled eggs. It was a good experience and that's all you really want for breakfast right?

Mel's is famous for delicious old fashioned hand crafted milkshakes, great classic sandwiches, and ever changing daily dinner specials. We eat here at least weekly and keep coming back for the excellent service, great food and reasonable prices. Unique style and decor has you stepping back in time to a 50's style diner. Stop in...You'll be glad you did!

Run, don't walk, make a U-turn if you have to for this quaint diner joint located just outside of the outer banks. Good burger, good salad, good service, good kids meal and lots of bustle make this diner the real thing and not some faux throwback to a much-too-remembered age. Good friendly service to boot.

i was hoping for a tasty cheeseburger. while it was cooked well, and all the fixins' were tasty i could still detect the fact that they use cheap frozen beef.
if they were using better ingredients this place would be a far better value. -

My husband and I stopped for breakfast on our way back home from our corolla vacation in Sept and in a hurry we didn't expect much, boy were we surprised excellent omelets fast and excellent service. My In-Laws ran a restaurant for years in the upstate finger lakes NY area and they were the favorite breakfast stop around so we know good food! We will definitely be stopping here again on our next visit to NC in June!
