Mello's is your standard diner, but with all of the amazing options for foodies in the Byword Market area it is not usually my first pick. The food is good, the service is good but there are some places in the market that are better than good. That being said, Mellos does maintain the classic "diner feel" and there are lots of regulars.
I have been to Mellos a few times, and I have not had a bad experience. I typically go for brunch and find myself switching between lunch food and breakfast food. I had a club sandwich one time that I remember enjoying, and have also had their standard bacon and eggs breakfast. Our server is typically the same person: a very friendly person who will joke around with you. Food is usually hot and comes out quickly, and drinks are refilled regularly.
I would go again if someone suggested it, but it is not my favourite brunch place in Ottawa. There is nothing that "wows" me and everything about it is typical. -

Mello's: typical greasy spoon and I LOVE IT!
Not for the prissy metro crowd, that's for sure, this is a true blue diner with real homemade cookin' on the grill, right before your eyes.
I've been frequenting this place for almost 20 years now, I eat here 4 or 5 times a month, the best breakfast (eggs, meat, homefries, toast, coffee) in the city as far as I'm concerned.
Daily old fashioned specials, hot chicken, meatloaf, sheppard's pie, even fish & chips on fridays... they make their own pies for dessert too if you are so inclined.
Atmosphere is pleasant, and the staff treat you as part of the family, no matter what walk of life you hail from. You leave when you are ready and pay on the way out, no rush, no fuss, no muss... stay as long as you want.
open 24hrs, and good place for a cup of joe anytime... -

This is your classic greasy spoon diner. When you walk in you'll know what I'm talking about.
The narrow restaurant has the kitchen open to watch on the right hand side with a row of bar stools and there are a few booths on the left side.
I ended up at Mellos after the bar one night with friends as it's a 24 hour spot as most traditional diners are. I didn't even know the place existed and given it's small size you can't really blame me.
The staff are rather gruff but I didn't really even find the food to be all that great. My friends were really hungry from a rough night out but I hadn't had that much to drink so perhaps I was being more critical than they were at the time.
Their prices were low and we seemed to leave the place as quickly as we stormed in. I left feeling that Mellos is probably better enjoyed with a bit more alcohol in my system and if I wanted greasy food I can just as easily hit up Zak's or Elgin Street Diner or Dunn's in the future. -

Why is everyone saying they like this place? I understand it might have been here a while but it's not that great. We had breakfast here and the syrup was SUPER sweet and the sausage was gross. It tasted like hot dog meat. It was not my cup-o-tea for sure. It's got a "Waffle House" feel to it (for those of you who have actually been to a Waffle House in the States) with the cooking equipment visible and the food cooked to order on the grill. We sat down and ate ( needless to say I didn't eat everything on my plate) and the waiter cleared our plates and never told us we needed to go to the front to pay so we just kinda sat there trying to figure out where we were goin for lunch since we both didn't really enjoy the plate we'd just partaken of. It might be a place that's been there a while but I'm sure it's just because it's historical - because it's not the food!

This is an interesting place. I first stumbled upon Mellos with a friend one Halloween when we arrived early for a party. We walked down the street and stopped by this place. It's a diner at first glimpse. The classic counter is immediately noticeable, so one wouldn't expected to find beer being served. But that's what we had, a few beer and some food. The food is diner-esque and really good. It's not the healthiest stuff in the world, but it certainly hits the spot. The service is friendly, and with a lot of regulars around, an interesting conversation is usually on the go. When downtown, at the bars or otherwise, people generally go to Zak's or the Elgin Street Diner. I suggest giving Mellos a go the next time your stomach starts rumbling after a long night of wholesome activities.
