I've eaten at Meiji for years and I have to say that I've always been happy with my experiences here. They aren't classic Japanese sushi but in Winnipeg, there's only 2 places that can claim to that title. I've probably only been disappointed a couple of times and that was attributed to poor rice quality (too warm or wet). That being said, I've also experienced warm wet rice at Edohei. But otherwise, I've always enjoyed my meals here. A couple of years ago they updated the decor but it's still a pretty dark space as there's really no natural light in this place. There's lots of regular seating along with a few traditional tatami seats. Food price points are middle of the road here.
One of my favourite items is the spicy marinated tuna ($12.50), you get about 6 slices of seared tuna served in a bowl of delicious sauce. I don't find the sauce to be spicy at all but it has a nice balance of flavours that doesn't overpower the tuna. Salmon sashimi is another fave ($15.50) for 8 generous portions of fatty delicious salmon. There's tons of rolls to choose from and I try to select different ones every time. The one issue I have with their rolls is that sometimes the house rolls can be way too large which makes things kinda messy as the roll can fall apart. I like the red dragon roll, firefly roll and negi toro maki.
There's also a great selection of martinis that are about $8 each, care of the lounge upstairs, "G Martini" which also serves sushi upstairs.
Service is pretty fast and the servers are friendly. -

I like the building this was in and the seating -- you kneel on pillows, although there is a space under the table if you don't want your feet to fall asleep. :) The servers were all very nice, and the sushi was fine.
We got our orders quickly, although I did note that the people who prepared our sushi didn't really seem too... professional? I don't want to say anything too disparaging, so I'll say that if you are looking for a well-trained sushi chef, head over to Edohei. This shouldn't matter much if you're going to be ordering the rolls. Sometimes you feel like great sashimi or omakase, but sometimes you just want a nice meal of interesting sushi rolls. If you're in the mood for the latter, Meiji is a good choice. :) -

| went there for lunch with a friend and we both ordered one of the California special and within 5 minutes both our lunch special was ready it was kinda good if we were in a rush but strange if you wonder how it was prepared so quick!
Both of our California rolls was cold, I know sushi is just raw fish and all but shouldn't the rice on the roll be warm?
