McNoodle...so weird of a name.  Based on the name and location, I thought it was going to be an Asian hamburger joint or somewhere that I could get a fusion of Irish/Chinese food.

Since then, I've been here a number of times and this is one of the places I have to bring my Cantonese family and friends when they visit Vancouver.  Sure, the noodles here may be pricier for the size, but quality over quantity, people!  You must order any one of their noodle dishes with wontons or dumplings, congee, and deep fried beancurd.

If two generations of native Hong Kongers are telling me that this place is authentic, then I have to try it--and try I did!  Never judge based on first appearances...you'll be surprised.

MaxNoodle House is the correct name, as is on the canopy out in front. But for argument's sake, let's refer to the latter. When you walk into McNoodle House, the ambiance sort of feels like a diner. Empty and bare, with just tables and chairs, with no personality to it. The crowds are there, making you believe that they have some good eats. But do they? Read on to find out.

I ordered the #3 Braised Beef Brisket / Tendon & Wonton Noodle Soup ($7.50). What I got was a small-medium sized bowl of egg noodles topped with 3-4 pieces of braised beef brisket and tendon. The beef brisket was very tender, falling apart in your mouth, and the tendons were fatty. Yum. The egg noodles were soft yet firm but did a decent job of absorbing the flavors. Underneath all those noodles were shrimp wontons that were filled with mostly shrimp and were very tasty but somewhat sodium-induced. Good, but the saltiness can be overwhelming. The beef and bone broth was tolerable, but I found it slightly muddled. It didn't have the clean flavorful profile that it should have. My guess is because so much other stuff was stuffed in the bowl, there was so little room for the broth to fill in the empty space.

I also tried the #9 - Shrimp & Pork Dumpling Noodle Soup ($5.35) which was somewhat drab. The broth was a lot cleaner, but the shrimp and pork dumplings were bland and boring. Maybe, because I was so pumped up on the sodium from the shrimp wontons, but I found this noodle soup to be unappealing and forgettable. Between the two, I would definitely go for the #3.

McNoodle House serves some decent noodle soups, but being that I was in a highly dense Asian population, my expectations were a lot higher. I left somewhat disappointed, as I had better noodle soup broths in New York City. My other gripe was that portions were very small. If anything, they would have put it in a bowl 2-3 times its size and fill it up with more broth and noodles. Considering all the other options you have, I would probably skip McNoodle House and go somewhere else for a much fuller and cheaper meal.

Came here to get my congee fix.  This place has recently been renamed.  Most of you probably knew this place as Mak's.

The parking lot in front was quite full, but there were some spots open.

This place closes at 2100, so something to keep in mind.

Inside was somewhat empty, but the staff didn't seem bored or anything.  It was nice that they let us eat here even though we came in 15 minutes before closing.

The former Mak's was always known for their congee.  I am not sure if their management changed with the renaming, but the taste of the congee suggests this is not the case.  It's just the way I remember it.  Scorching hot, with generous chunks of filling. Delicious.  The bowls are slightly smaller than other restaurants, but they're only $6!

I should come by more often.  Totally forgot how good this place is.

One of my former 'must-hit' places in Richmond. Formerly Mak's now called McNoodle, who thought of this name change? A must have, and a place I use to always bring guest from out of town to, this place has seemed to have not changed much in anything from the menu to the restaurant itself. The only thing that has changed is the elevated prices for each dish. With an ever changing landscape of good places to eat, I cannot say it is the best, and certainly not the best 'bang for the buck'.

The one thing that can be said is that their shrimp wonton, is really just that, all shrimp, and nothing else. The bowls of noodles are still small, and I think they have toned down on the msg, as I do not walk out of here without drinking mass amounts of tea. The noodles still have that elasticity, but many other 'wonton' joints have caught up in quality.

It still amazes me that I came in on a Monday night, and the place was pretty packed. Which means this place still has it's lure. I would definitely recommend this place for people who have not been, as the stuff is pretty good, I just cannot put this on the top anymore.

Bang for your buck it is not, but amazing food it is.

The delicious but small wontons were made purely from shrimp (no pork filler). Their soup bases are fantastic and their noodles had a great chewy texture to it (in Cantonese, it's "soong"). The congee is flavourful and hearty. But the most important I wasn't thirsty by the end of it meaning little to no MSG.

The place was pretty full, but the servers were attentive. Overall, I wouldn't mind coming here again, but I'd have to be wary who I come with - most people would scoff at the portion sizes, but I think it's totally worth it!

Maybe my expectations were too high? I really wanted to fall in love with the wonton noodles but that was not the case. I didn't detect anything great from the wonton mein (noodles) - tastes pretty average. The broth was very oily and no real flavour so that's disappointing for a soup! The dumplings were salty so maybe the saltiness is suppose to balance the bland broth? Not sure. The braised beef brisket and tendon noodles were decent.

As others have noted, it is small portion....the bowl is the size of a rice bowl in a typical restaurant. So for $4.95-$6.95 for a typical bowl of noodles here, it is kinda pricey if you are hungry. You either have to order two bowls or order other items.

This place has free parking in their lot. But remember - CASH ONLY. It's also open daily from 11 am - 9 pm.

I'm currently eating take-out from McNoodle House at my desk in Seattle. We brought some home from our weekend getaway to Vancouver. I'm a fan of Mike's Noodle House in Seattle and so many people have told me how much better McNoodle House is. It's just not the case.

I like the crunchiness of the noodles, but that's about all their wonton mein has going on. The broth is fairly bland and the wontons are so so. Not on my must-eat list for my next trip.

    Wonton Noodle Soup.

If you are a fan of a delicious shrip shell flavoured soup, then you are in luck!  Before I even set foot in this place I was told time and again about how authentic this place really is. The broth is delicious and the wontons are amazing. I am not the biggest fan of noodles in broth....but.....this is a great place to eat. This will always be on my list of great places to experience when you are in Vancouver. The only question I have is, why did they change their name to McNoodle House?

Obviously being married into a Chinese family, I eat lots and lots of Chinese food so even though being gweilo makes my opinion suspect, I've had my fair share of all types of asian food to develop a decent taste for the cuisine.

Father in law raved about the wonton soup, so wonton soup we had and it really was quite good. The noodles are better than average, although not as mindblowingly amazing as I was led to believe but the wontons themselves are fantastic here.

As often noted, portions are smaller than in the states but the food was very good. Still, although the wonton soup was stellar, overall this wasn't anything you couldn't find a dozen times over on any block in San Gabriel so it's just an A-OK from me. Cash only, surprise surprise.

Over the years it has remained the same while others seem to have popped up to compete.  They serve the basics, but now the basics, as in Wuntun and other dumplings seem small in comparison.

My latest dining experience after a hiatus of over a year didn't leave me with an impression that I had to come back and try something new.

The staff was friendly and if you know how to get service in a Chinese restaurant, then the service was good.

But the soup and the noodles in comparison to those like Michigan noodles wasn't any better.  People say it's the best, but I'm thinking now, it's about average.  Competition has come up that far.

The fried Dace balls were good (average) and the chicken wings were ok.

Like I said,  the competitions come a long way baby.

Overall a solid place to eat, but a bit pricey for what you get on some dishes.

I always ask to come here when I visit my mom in Richmond. Always. My favourite is beef tendon in flat noodle soup. I also order the blanched pork liver. The food comes really fast. Yes the bowls are smaller than the average bowls more fitted to my "Canadian" appetite, as my mom likes to put it, but the prices are reasonable and so that just allows me to try other things on the menu as well.
Other people would probably comment on the ambiance or the interior design aspect of the restaurant, but really, the place is actually clean and nice, unlike other traditional noodle places in hong kong. An authentic noodle place is not meant to be glamourous, people.

Oh, if you like deep fried tofu, they also do it quite well!

My boyfriend, the "gwai lo" (I really hate that term), likes the lo mein with spicy sauce "Tsa Cheung lo mein".

My favorite meal in Vancouver! The sui gao was good.  The wonton mein was good! Their beef brisket was good!

No complaints. Fast service and good food. That's what a wonton mein place is suppose to be!  This really made me feel like I'm back in Hong Kong. I love this place! I have upgraded it to "must hit up" the next time I'm back in Vancouver.

The best Cantonese noodle house in Vancouver. Their beef brisket / tendon noodle is my favourite. The sauce of the tender beef brisket is poured on top is the noodle when served.Although Maks Noodle is not as good as the best noodle houses in Hong Kong but it is hands down the best Cantonese style noodle that I can find so far in North America.

During lunch time, there is usually a line up, but the turnover of tables is quick. So maximum wait time is about 5-10 mins.

Classic HK style noodle house.  The noodles are perfectly done, the broth is nice and clear, the brisket is super tender, and the wontons are deliciously thinly wrapped morsels!  I also loved the chicken knees!  (I'm a sucker for crunchy fried things, particularly when served in such a non-greasy way as here at Mak's.)

Food road has so many good options, it is hard to know which to choose - but Mak's is a consistent reliable choice (I've now been there at least 5 times!).

This place serves beef brisket/ tendon extraordinaire. The portion might be "Asian" aka small, but their quality is top notch. The soup has a nice depth to it and their dumplings are better than average.
As others have mentioned, their prices is indeed slightly more expensive than your typical Chinese noddle house. Personally, I find it's worth it.
Can be crowded even at 2 pm on a weekend but service is pretty efficient.

The sign on the outside reads McNoodle. The menu states Mak's.

This is good stuff! The broth for the noodle soup here is "loung" (more intense flavor) compared to Tsim Chai Kee. However I prefer the humongous shrimp wontons at Tsim Chai's better.

Service pretty OK- takes only cash so bring extra if you are hungry

Noodles are very fine egg noodles-- as in literally, extremely thin-- and tasty. Spicy beef, beef tendon, dumplings, gai lan, we had 'em all... very simple but very well done. Beef tendon was surprisingly good...

The won ton mein-- same noodles and dumplings, only in soup-- was almost as good. The chicken and mushroom jook (err, congee) was only okay though. Service was also very quick.

I really, really want to give this place 4 stars, but we ordered what should have been ample food for our crowd, and we ended up cleaning out everything... the non-hungry people were all fine, but the handful of us who were starving, well, we're still hungry. Sigh. Partially our fault for not ordering enough and partially 'cause their portions were smaller than expected.

Our first stop on our Vancouver shop/foodie tour is here in a restaurant that actually spelled out Mak as McNoodle...haha...I kept expecting Ronald McDonald to pop out to say hiya kids!

I ordered the wonton dumpling nooodle soup, and the pork congee. Congee was thick and wonderfully good. The noodles were also fresh and the soup is very tasty. They had young mustard greens with hoisin sauce...very delicious. Portion sizes are smaller but that's the way they roll in Canada.

Although the name of the restaurant is listed as Mak's Noodle Restaurant, it is not the same as THE Mak's on Wellington Street in HK and the one in Richmond reviewed here is actually called McNoodle.

    1) Watery Cantonese (not Chiuchow which is watery) congee with no flavour.

    2) Cash Only

    Add dumplings to above $6.50
Lomein (dish) with 2 toppings $8.50
    Plate of snacks $7

This is not a cheap wonton noodle house. Please don't expect to be full after a small bowl of noodles (I'd say it's snack size bowl) average for lunch runs at $10-$15 per person assuming 2 of you are willing to share.
Despite the price this Is the real deal hk style wonton house. Noodles are never soggy (al dente always) wontons have the freshes shrimp and shrimp roe, not overloaded w meat. Wontons are bit size (perfect in my opinion) Soup base has good flavour.

The bowl of wontons was about 5" in diameter. Yeah, not big by any means (yah right!) but if size doesn't bother you...then you will love this place.  A small joint in the midst of a small strip mall with other restaurants - you will encounter a line but it goes fast and soon you will find yourself seated and dining over won ton heaven.  This place is so good...I'm thinking of flying my dad out (from SF!) so he can concur that Mak's probably has the best wonton one could ever dream of.  I'd give it a 5 star but service lacks...but who's there for the service anyways?

Okay, so I came to this noodle restaurant in Richmond expecting to be wowed since it was recommended by a guy from the states as well as a local Vancouver person.  When I went into the place, it was packed and the menu prices were inexpensive, around $5 to 8 dollars.  My friends and I tried each of the menu items from wuntun and dumpling in noodle soup to lo-mein with pork hock, and to meat ball congee.  When the bowls came, it was more like a small snack size than a meal and the taste was sadly lacking.  I'd rather go somewhere else and pay more for a tasty, full size meal.

What my father hails as the best wonton mein in Vancouver has seemingly slipped since the last time I've been in Vancouver/Richmond but it is still considered head and shoulders above what we get in the SF Bay Area.  I'll echo what the other reviews have said in that the beef stew wonton (I've never had the two together) was good as was the fried tofu.

yes, i'm another SF Bay Area native writing a review... we are spoiled with delicious food where we live, just to preface this review....

to clarify a point of confusion for myself and my husband, after reading reviews for a good bowl of wonton noodle soup at Mak's Noodle Restaurant in Richmond, BC, we set out on our drive.  we found the address OK, but it wasn't "Mak's Noodle Restaurant" out front, it said "McNoodle Restaurant."  OK, soooo not the same thing, but we're glad we decided it was close enough in name to stop for a bite.

we ordered the wonton noodle soup, a bowl of congee + chinese fried donuts.  the food was great--just small portions as previous people mentioned (maybe because we come from the U.S., land of giant portions?).  wontons were generous with shrimp, noodles perfect in texture, congee was a good consistency.  service was service to be expected at a chinese restaurant.

next time we come to vancouver, we'll be stopping by again!

One of my favorite "small eats" restaruants to visit when I'm in Vancouver. I love the size of their poriton since I don't eat a lot. I love that their wontons are smal and not humongous. However,I was a bit disappointed with my visited to Mak's this past Nov. 2009. The broth tasted bitter. On the plus side, the noddles were still al dente and not soggy.

My extended family loves this place for authentic hk Wonton noodles and congee. I think I had been here before once, a long time ago, but it's been a while. We decided to hit this up for lunch today and it was fantastic! i had the tendon lo-mein with the wide noodles and me and my pal split some seafood (we call it sampan here in seattle) congee. the tendon was perfectly seasoned and super tender. i could taste the citrus peel they used as well as the garlic and ginger. yum! the congee was slow cooked til the consistancy was perfectly silky the way it would be only if its slow simmered. the service here was super fast. we ordered and it came out in like less than ten min. how's that for fast food? my new favorite wonton house in richmond. oh, and the awning out front of this joint says "mcnoodle" for some reason. i didn't see no scary clown serving fries and burgers so i'm not sure if there's any relation to mcd's. cash only so you know it's good.
