Simply amazing fish and chips. Probably the best in the area. Very fast and friendly service. Price is good too.

I went to this restaurant with another Yelper. The menu has cod, haddock, halibut, etc. - all the usual suspects in fish & chips restaurants. I had a small seafood platter ($11). It came out with 2 scallops, 2 shrimps, 1 halibut and some fries. It had a sizeable portion.
The shrimps and scallops were fried nicely with not too crispy and not too soggy dressing on the outside. But I could't really taste the sweet flavors. The fish had a bit of greasy bland taste. But it didn't disintegrate into tiny pieces too easily.
The sauce isn't homemade. It is just a store-bought mayo with a bit of relish in it. There was too much mayo in it. It lacked sour lemony flavor to counter the greasy aftertaste of the fish. It didn't really compliment the food at all.
The restaurant is a bit small, but there are many tables. Tables are mostly for 2, and they are quite small. They are placed close to each other to give privacy. The restaurant isn't immaculate, but it was clean enough. There were some crumbs on the table we sat at. The food came out very quickly. But we were the only customers.
25 cents charge for debit card use. The parking lot can hold around maximum of 15 cars. -

How come I felt so comfortable eating at McCowan Fish & Chips?
Maybe I now finally to used to sketchy Scarborough strip plaza?
For a split second I almost thought I was in one of the Northern Chinese restaurants that I frequent and want to practice my Mandarin on my waiter!
You cannot blame me as all through my lunch I was listening to the two waiters chatting in Mandarin.
Cod Fish only ($5.50) is sizable. The batter is crispy and crunchy. The oil can be a little fresher but it is A-OK.
As usual, I tried one of the scallops and shrimps from my dinner mate's Seafood Platter (he offered, really he did! I didn't force him!) Both are not bad... but when I start eating deep fried heavy battered food, they kind of all tasted the same.
The service here is efficient and indifference... and of course remind me of the Chinese Joints I frequent!

Best fish an chips I've ever had an the price was right. if you are looking for real English style fish an chips with real beer batter coating this is the place.
