With hair cuts you can go cheap and get what you pay for (and not be too disappointed about it if you know that going in) or you can pay a lot and just hope that the dresser knows how to cut Asian hair and not give you some crazy, super Asian doo.

Maya Hair Salon is a great place in between the two.  At $15 for a men's cut and hair stylists who know how to handle Asian hair, I've been happy with the quality independent of who's working on my hair.  And they have juice boxes.

I came here based on many of my friend's recommendations (and of course yelp reviews) and I'm glad I did. I called in to make an appointment for the same day and they were able to squeeze me in for the time I wanted. When I got there, there was a little bit of a wait but it was fine. One of the ladies that works there gave me some magazines and a juice box which I thought was super cute.

I got my hair washed, cut, dried, and styled (they ask if you want your hair straightened or curled) and it came up to $25 which is pretty decent! I am very satisfied with how my hair looks. Overall, including the waiting time, my cut took an hour. Next time I come, I might perm my hair.. who knows!

Maya hair salon is amazing. Really knowledgeable and experienced stylists who really know their technique and keep up-to-date with style.

My first experience there was kind of bad but that's because I went in and gave a pretty vague idea of what I wanted.

Honestly, I think you really need to know how to handle your own hair and what works/what doesn't in order to get a halfway decent cut here. Communication really isn't a problem; I don't speak Korean or Japanese and I can always get my point across in English and with pictures that I show on my laptop (this, I find, is super effective).

To the people that got bad cuts, gesturing and saying vague stuff like "trim" is usually gonna get you a bad cut at any salon, not just at Maya.

For the most part I've had really good experiences. The shop owner lady usually feeds me (since I'm there for 2-3 hours each time) and Michelle is a perfectionist. She often spends time after the cut to adjust individual hairs and hairspray her masterpiece into submission!

My only real complaint is that they don't use barbicide at all and never sterilise their brushes, scissors, etc. I feel a little icky about that.

I was just there yesterday and things were a little rushed, which I didn't really like. I left with some hairdye still on my face and ears and I didn't notice until I got home, otherwise I would've said something. The haircut itself was amazing. They have their on and off days I think...

I had a free afternoon and came to Maya Hair Salon after finding it on Yelp.  They were able to take me without an appointment.  Emi was my stylist.  After a couple quick questions about what I wanted, she got to work and gave me a great cut.  I think she knew what I wanted more than I did.

I've gotten my hair cut a couple times in Tokyo and Okinawa.  Their service reminded me of Japan.  And for someone who's really picky about getting haircuts, I was very pleased and surprised by the result.

    Definitely recommend.

I'm a low maintenance girl with low maintenance hair, but now that I have a daughter with high maintenance hair I can no longer justify the indulgence of expensive haircuts.

The haircut I got mid-May held its shape so well that I didn't feel the desperate need for a cut until early September.  As per the advice of other reviewers, I brought in a photo both times and only had to confirm the exact length when asked.  For $25 (plus a $5 tip) you get a juice box and an efficient hair cut experience.  No chit chat, unless you have a command of the Japanese language, which I do not, and even if I did there doesn't seem to be that obligation on anyone's part to make idle chatter.

It should be noted that I'm Asian and have straight, flat hair.  I would highly recommend them to other straight haired people.

I swear this is the best place to get your hair done. I heard a lot of good feedbacks from all stylist that works here but in my opinion Masako is the best!!!!

She's very nice and takes time to cut your perfectly. Initially, she'll ask you questions about your style or maybe if you bring a picture with you she definitely knows how to bring the style with your current hair length.

I recommend this place. For $15 (men's haircut) you get a wash after cut and free nestea while waiting :-)

    Kudos to Maya

If your a dude, this place will make you look like Spock.

Not surprisingly, its geared towards asian styles, but i thought since enough white dudes wrote satisfied reviews, they would do a good job.

First of all, very hard to communicate. Most of the people there speak little english and have a hard time understanding you. They do seem to be professionals though. I was impressed with their toolbelts and techniques. But ultimately they just don't seem to know how to cut hair in non-asian styles.

Having said all that, there are a few things they do differently there that I really liked.

    1) They wash your hair after its cut. This makes way more sense since then you don't leave with all kinds of loose hair falling all over the place
    2) They practically give you a cranial massage when they wash your hair. I was not prepared for this. and it was quite nice.
    3) its cheap

I've now gone twice and both times ended up with the spock-cut. I just can't get my point across. I'll have to find someplace else.

I came here after reading all the great reviews and left extremely disappointed. The salon is very busy and they treat it like an assembly line, hence it feels like they are rushing with the cut. The hairstylist cut my hair too short when I told her to just trim and clean it up a little. She also used a razor the entire time.

Maybe the problem here is communication or lack thereof. I really wanted to walk away and not pay for my cut because it was that bad.

Fun and interesting experience and I'm definitely going back!

Parking was found on a side street, free and just around the corner from the salon.  The place doesn't look like much from the outside and would be easy to miss.  A quick walk up some stairs and you're inside.

I arrived on time and was introduced to hesato (HE-SAT-TO) who promptly handed me a magazine full of young coiffed Japanese men (boys really).

    He said "Ok, you choose."

Most of the cuts all looked the same.  Dragonball-Z-esque - very spiky, wild hair and not well suited to my taste.  Still, they were damn cool.  I've always been jealous of the Japanese in the way that they always seem to have an amazing sense of style without appearing to try too hard.  I wanted to look like that.

I guess he sensed my consternation as he flipped the page and pointed to a slightly less spiky cut.  "Sure" I said.

I could tell right away that he'd had a lot of training so I really wasn't too worried and even had visions of myself coming out looking Japanese while I waited.

Alas, I'll never be that cool.  Still, it was one of the best haircuts I'd had and I'll definitely go back next time.

I don't think you can get this quality for $15 anywhere.

I'm always a little nervous when I go to Korean salons because I do not speak enough Korean to explain exactly what I want.  Maya Hair Salon was fantastic, I think they cater to a more than just Koreans.  I went in on a Monday afternoon around 2pm, it wasn't too busy, I think I waited for about 10 minutes (I did not have an appointment).  I was offered a drink box and given a magazine to pick a hair style, their magazines are all Asian styles so I recommend bringing your own picture if you know what you want.  I have really thick hair and there is a lot of it, I asked the girl to cut off about 4 inches  (I think she cut more like 6 but that was fine, I'm not too attached to my hair) and to thin it out a lot.  She did a fantastic job and was super quick.  My hair cut included a wash and blow dry and it came to $25 ($30 after a $5 tip, I recommend giving this directly to the person cutting your hair).  Also note, safest to bring cash.  If you go I recommend asking for Sunny, she was great. I typically only go to get my hair cut about once or twice a year because I'm not usually ever satisfied and it's usually so expensive but now that I've discovered Maya I think I'll go every few months.

Korean and Japanese hair stylists run this tiny upstairs salon. This is the place to go to cut Asian hair. I've been here twice and they've always managed to tame my thick tresses into something that suits my face shape and style. I've had my hair done twice by the owner (whose name is also Sandy!). She did a lovely job of cutting and colouring my hair. Kaori also did a decent job of giving me a layered shorter style recently. Their English is good enough to communicate with me what I'm looking for, but mostly I just sit back and let them do their thing and hope everything comes out right. And it does.. eventually.

The only minor complaints I have about this place are
    1. the noob young male hair colourist who accidentally bleached my whole head of hair orange last year. Sandy fixed it and offered me 50% off my next visit, which I stupidly declined and am now still trying to grow out the supremely damaged orangey ends that show up every time my hair dye fades.
    2. ventilation in here is not so great, super stuffy with chemical fumes during the summer. And there's always a horde of people waiting to get their hair done, so make an appointment! Or go early during a weekday. They'll offer you a box of juice while you're flipping through Asian hairstyle magazines deciding on which SNSD girl's hair you want.

Best place to get a haircut in Toronto, IMO. I get a cut here everytime. I've had it done by several of them, and they are all good, but my fav is Michelle. Perfect, each time I come here. (I'm a guy, btw)

Also, they do accept tips, and you SHOULD tip, if they do a good job. Cut for $15, I give $5 for tip.

I decided to stop by Maya's for a haircut while on vacation on a whim.  I read good review on http://yelp.com, so decided to go for it.  I didn't have an appointment and was able to helped pretty quickly.  The owner gave me and my husband a boxed drink and was reserved but nice.  I brought a picture of the style I wanted.  She was quick and gave me a no-fuss choppy layered style with bangs.  She also curled the bottoms for me to achieve the look in the picture.  All for $25!  And when I tried to tip when paying, I was refused.  This is typical in Asia, especially in South Korea or Japan.

I would recommend Maya Hair Salon if you have Asian hair and looking for a hairdresser familiar with your hair type.  And is quick and not expensive.

I am not a picky fellow when it comes to hair. I always let it grow too long to the point where it gets unruly and eventually manage to find my way into a hair salon of some sort to get it trimmed down. Rinse and repeat; it is a vicious cycle of bad hair and decent hair.

Be that as it may, whenever I'm in Toronto and I need a haircut, lately I find myself coming back to this place time and time again since I'm satisfied by both the service and the resulting hair. Call for an appointment to make sure you don't wait too long. The stylists are all pretty friendly. And you get a free juice box while you wait (bonus!). $15 for a decent men's haircut is nothing to scoff at at all.

Great place to get your hair cut if you have Asian hair, but appointments mean nothing here. It seems like every time I come here, I end up waiting half an hour after my scheduled time to get my hair cut. Today I waited literally an hour. I wonder if it's because I got forgotten in the crowd of people just sitting around waiting for their friend to get a haircut.

The level of English varies among the stylists but they have lots of magazines around you can use to point out a picture of what you want. They always tend to do a good job with my hair and once you actually get your hair cut they're pretty fast about it.

I'm pretty picky about my hair especially after getting it cut in Korea very well for very cheap. While on a business trip and in search of a good hair salon I yelped for a place and say this being ranked at 4.5 stars so I bit the bullet. When I say "good" I mean quality service at a reasonable price. This place is definitely it. The lady who cut my hair is a Korean woman who took the time to make sure she cut it exactly the way I wanted it.

    A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

I'm coming back to Toronto again for business and will definitely stop by Maya's again. Keep up the good work.

Men are simple creatures really.  All we ask for is someone to cut our hair with consistent quality without breaking the bank.  Unfortunately the reality is it's difficult to find someone that pays enough attention to our follicles and skilled enough in the modern techniques of hair styling to be awarded a Yelp 5 star.....that is until now.

Maya Hair Salon has some excellent hair stylists that are either Japanese or Korean.  The most popular and talented stylist there is Miyuki.  Simply show her a picture of the hair style you want and let her work her magic.  You will not be dissapointed.

Mens cut with shampoo is $15 and womens is $25.  Just be sure to book in advance to get Miyuki because it can take up to two weeks before she has an opening.

Appointment started on time.  It took half an hour from start to finish for a haircut.  Aware of the communication issue, I took pictures of the kind of haircut I want.  I found it frustrating not being able to make the stylist understand, though the final result is satisfactory.  On the bright side, at least there's no pressure for small talk .  Not sure if I will come back.  Not bad for $25.

I stumbled upon this place looking for a haircut. The place I wanted to go to was closed on Sundays, so I figured I'd stroll down Korea-town and find another place. The sign outside said they also did Japanese hair-straightening (It didn't matter to me, but I figured they must be at least semi-talented)

Luckily, I was right. My hair stylist, from Japan, was very professional and knowledgeable. She was well versed on the complexities of Asian Hair. Normally, I'd paid quite a bit more for a Japanese Hair Salon back in Vancouver, so for $15 this was good deal. After I got home, I checked online to see what others thought and they all agreed, this place was great.

Also, the owner (I think) came around offering everyone box drinks while we waited. How awesome is that?

got my hair cut on tuesday, sept 13 at 4 pm. it was a walk in and i only had to wait around 5 minutes. i actually went the night before at 6:30 without an appointment and that didn't pan out. so i guess it depends what time you go. better to just make an appointment. got my juice box and 2 magazines. the gentleman that cut my hair didn't speak much english but we didn't need to. he understood me with a few words and a few hand gestures. i let him work his magic. at times i thought he was pulling my a hair a little too hard but in the end, great job, scissor techniques i've never seen before (i have long, thin and straightish air). also very meticulous and used the flat iron twice! he didn't wash my hair though - guess he thought he didn't need to? the girl beside me got her hair washed. for $25 (+$5 tip), i'd go back for sure. it's a no fuss no muss kind of joint but gets the job done.

Third day in Toronto! slightly humid, hot and some wet days! I decided it's time for a haircut! So I did yelp this place! and I totally forgot the name, but I figured this place must be it. So to make this short, the korean girl that girl my hair, OMG Professional all for how much? I got a professional mens haircut for a fraction of the price! I feel like Going to toronto for a haircut now! But I live in California! Soo sad! Anyways definitely like my haircut! This is by far theee cheapest haircut I've ever gotten, that I completely, whole heartedly enjjoy! So 5 stars for one hell of a trendy hair salon! I will come back whenever ever I come back to Toronto! I love this! Words cannot express how happy I am! The service is great, and the atmosphere is amazingly good! if you are the owner and you are reading this, I got the Korean girl 2nd to the window! Great haircut! I love it! I will be back before I leave for Toronto Next week! Thank you!

To follow up, I did explain to her how and what I wanted and she did exactly the same and added a little twist that I think tied it all very nicely. Very professional, I watched her cut my hair and she was really focused and into it, which I didn't mind at all. fantastic haircut!
