East Watertown, MA
I have been here a few times and was very excited to see a new place in Watertown to go to. I have been putting off writing this review because I really wanted to give this place more than 3 stars, but I can't just yet.
Don't get me wrong - the food is good but not always consistent. Some people I have gone with don't get the eclectic mix of foods. I am told the chef makes things that he himself likes. The chicken Cobb salad is good, but the steak burrito is just OK. The portabello mushroom "burger" is tasty, as is the grilled cheese (a new take with fontina and sage) and tomato soup (no Campbell's soup here :)
I think it is the atmosphere - are they takeout or eat in. If they are eat in, the space is not comfortable. It is very sterile and uninviting. If it is takeout, they are not in a good spot for this. It is in front of a bus stop. The street has parking but those spaces are few and far between (it's on Mt. Auburn St). They would do better to have a takeout system like curbside-to-go, but where would people stop for that - no idea.
I will keep going here (a friend I lunch with likes it here too) and hope they continue to do well.Listed in: Welcome to my Neighborhood

I'm going to try to be judicious here. There are things about Maximo's that impress me, and things that have potential for improvement. I do try to eat at a place more than twice before getting my Yelp on, especially for a restaurant that's new on the scene. Also, falling in love with one dish doesn't make for an informed review.
But before I get to all that, I am bursting to say one thing:
MAXIMO'S GRILLED CHEESE SAMMICH IS WONDERFUL. Won.der.ful. Cheddar, sauteed mushrooms and sage oozing from crusty, grilled white farm is not only the best thing that happened to me today (YMMV), but also is a whole new realm of take-out experience. TASTY. The *sage* is inspired. I am a grilled cheese person (both in the regular sense and in the "Love Letters" euphemism sense, but I digress), so this was a real treat.
And now for the more sane and... well, regular review. The hamburgers are good, and come with grilled tomato, caramelized onions and lettuce. Used to be served on a Portuguese roll, but last two times have been on a Kaiser. Steak burrito was meh. Cobb salad was a hit, decently sized, with fresh lettuce and three medium prices of warm, grilled, herby chicken. Unfortunately sandwiches don't come with anything. Just sandwich - no pickle, no chips; bupkis. So $5 for a grilled cheese is reasonable as long as you know that's all you're getting. Happily and healthily, the $8 burgers come with some great, herbed and well-done roasted potatoes instead of fries.
You are picking up on my love of herbs. Here's what I like most about Maximo's: there are flavors. This inspires me to try a variety of items from the menu. Yeah, this menu is all over the place, but because what I've tried has been pleasing, I'm less concerned with the identity of the restaurant as I am focused on as the preparation of individual dishes.
Sooooo... Oy. I'm always reluctant to say the following, but for the sake of ease for your customers, it's really difficult to place a phone order when the person on the other end does not understand English very well. She's very nice and I'm very patient, but seriously. At the very least, it makes a customer worry whether the order will arrive prepared correctly. At worst, a delivery order goes to the wrong address. Plus side: the magnets in the take out/delivery bags are a nice touch.
Maximo's, I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Now cover me again in sagey mushroom grilled cheese goodness and let's get this party started. -

We had the Cobb Salad and split a grilled cheese sandwich... Pretty good If I must say so myself...Not world class, but pretty good.
The place is kind of small, the service was OK, not top tier, but definitely a place to check out from time to time... If I sound lackluster, it's just because I prefer more exotic food like SUSHI or real good CHINESE food. Wish there was good place for pho or a banh mi around here... One can only dream! -

I have nothing but positives to say about Maximo's.
1) Price. The prices cannot be beat for big portions of thoughfully prepared, healthier meals.
2) Selection: They have a huge menu that is sure to make everyone in the family happy. From burritos, to turkey burgers mixed with goat cheese and tabouli (which I had, it was amazing!), to salads, to creative dinners and sandwiches. See, something for everyone!
3) Decor: I like it. The big kitchen is nice and exposed so you can see exactly where your food comes from. It is a takeout place, but there is still one table and some window stools in case you decide to eat there.
4) The people: Maximo's is run by a friendly, local family. When you stop in, neighbors and friends are there saying hi and grabbing dinner. It is just nice to see a real community restaurant.
5) DELIVERY!!! They just announced that they now deliver! Healthy REAL food that delivers?! There is no need to say anything more.... -
Review from Matt G.
Brighton, MA
We stopped by for the first time (finally) for a chicken burrito (me), turkey burger (wife), and falafel chips/hummus (ostensibly both, but mostly me).
It's a great location for us, being just across the river in Brighton, and I know we'll be back.
First, the chips and hummus. Delicious. All apologies, but I'd never had these great things, tortilla-style chips made from falafel. Nice and peppery, not too heavy, and perfect with the creamy, right-on hummus.
The burrito. Now, I'm more or less a Boca Grande guy... But this was a very, very good burrito! The chicken was nice and moist, the pico was good and zesty, and there is a really nice kick from the jalepenos - more than I expected, which I love. And best of all, the proportions were spot-on! So key for a great burrito.
The turkey burger (per the wife). Great Mediterranean flavor, with goat cheese complementing the richness of the turkey. She liked the big, soft roll it came on, as well as the herbed, roasted potatoes served on the side.
There are a ton of items on the menu I'd like to try, including the delicious-sounding tuna burger and some of the salads... I'll definitely be heading back to work through the rest of Maximo's menu. -

I received emails from http://spoolads.com regarding Maximo's Takeout offering coupons. So my husband and I tried it, and we loved it.
.
1. Delicious Hummus, burritos, and of course don't forget to get Chicken Quesadilla.
2. Instead of falafel chips I recommend fried falafel (just a thought)
3. Clean and nice decor I agree.
I will be back soon. Really excellent food for takeout. -

I'm thrilled to have a local take-out place that offers healthier alternatives to the typical pizza/sub/wing ding place (just how many are there in the area and how do they all stay in business anyway with the exact same menu?)
But I digress...back to Maximo's:
I haven't tried too many items on the menu, but the grilled cheese with egg and bacon is unbelievably yummy, the burger is just ok and the honey mustard pork sandwich is very good. Sides like the kale, spinach with mushrooms and roasted potatoes are terrific options when you're too wiped out to cook after a long work day but want a healthy dinner.
Would love to see some creative desserts when I'm feeling like indulging a little and I appreciate the free delivery!
Also, I agree with an earlier reviewer requesting gluten free options for sandwiches. There are great gluten-free breads these days and offering this would bring the celiacs from near and far for sure! -

Can I tell you how excited I am that Maximo's has opened it's doors in Watertown? And can I tell you how thrilled I am that french fries, onion rings, and other fattening food that I can't seem resist are no where to be found inside, forcing me to expand my simple mid-western palate?
My husband and I split the steak burrito and Slammin' BLT. The burrito was definitely tasty, but Oh. My. God. This BLT is a-maz-ing. This is no ordinary BLT. Enter the fried egg, cheddar cheese, and panini bread. I was slightly nervous that I won't ever try anything else on the menu, as to not waste a chance at eating another one of these again. But when I caught a glimpse of the Grilled Tuna Burger and Tex Mex Salad being consumed at the table next to me (and the subsequent "Oh my god's" that accompanied each bite), I quickly changed my mind. And I don't even like fish OR salads!
Oh, and the two awesome meals and drinks that the hubs and I split came to $14. The staff was friendly and competent. The owner came out to check on how we liked our food and welcomed us back. For a place that just opened, it really has it act together. Welcome to my weekly takeout rotation, Maximo's. -

Look. One step down from whole foods
Theme. Menu makes no sense. Music was blues. Staff are dressed like a bbq joint.
Food. App was served in a plastic to go box. Burrito was good to my wife. Being from colorado it was sub par and 80% rice.
Overall not as good as could have been. -
Review from Karen D.
I think we finally found another decent delivery place and it's about time. There are only a few places that I like to get delivery from, and I'm happy to put this on the list. We decided to play it safe for a first time and got burritos. I got the grilled tuna and my dinner partner got the steak. We also got a chicken satay to share. The burritos were a good size and have a brown rice option, which is a plus. Mine was tasty, but the steak one was a bit bland. The chicken satay was really good; a little small, but only $5. Two burritos and the satay came to less than $20 (plus tip) and I didn't have to get in the car to get it. I will definitely order again be a little more adventurous with what I order now that that the first order went well.

Maximo's has some of the freshest salads I have had from any restaurant around, and the portions are so generous that I often take 1/2 for lunch the next day. If you get a salad with chicken it is very fresh and the dressings are also very tasty.
The veggie burger is also wonderful and their vegetable or pork dumplings are better than I have at chinese restaurants nearby. I will also note, that the menu offers healthy options but there are is still room for indulgence with grilled cheese, and hamburgers etc. They just offer healthier side dishes on the menu, which is rare in any restaraunt. -

Some dishes are good. I hope they do well, as it is nice to have another restaurant nearby. I plan to return again to try more of their menu.
It's a takeout restaurant, but even for that the decor seems confused. I also don't get why the kitchen is so big. There is barely anywhere to sit.
The range of items on the menu is strange--steamed dumplings, burritos, steaks, satay, quesadilla, falafel, hummus, salads, and sandwiches. The grilled cheese I had was very overpowered by unchopped, whole sage leaves. -

We literally just stopped eating our food and I felt compelled to get on and write a review. We were so impressed.
We live close to Harvard Square so we don't generally venture elsewhere but this place is so great for healthy, delicious eats.
My husband got the steak burrito and I had the chicken sandwich and the house salad. First, we are from Arizona so we're picky about Mexican. Husband said the burrito was way better than the alternatives available here. Second, the vegetables in my salad were extremely fresh and crisp. My sandwich had REAL chicken which is amazing considering that most restaurants of this type use rib meat chicken.
And the best part? THE PRICE. The value is tremendous especially considering how expensive other places charge for similar items with not nearly the freshness.
I wouldn't say the food category is Mexican, it's got lots of diversity. Try it out! -

Watertown, MA
I've never actually been inside this place, but I've ordered delivery plenty of times, trying many things on the menu. So far, for me, the food has always been very consistent. The standouts for me are the steak, roasted potatoes, burgers, and BLT. The BLT is absolutely amazing. The burgers are good, and the steak dinner was great for the price. The side vegetables are always fresh.
The price is phenomenal, especially since there are other restuarants in the area that charge way, way more for not so fresh and healthy choices.
Overall, this place is a great new addition to the area. -

I can't say enough about this place. The food is amazing and you can't beat the prices. I love that they have a varied menu because sometimes I'm in the mood for a burger, but my girlfriend wants a burrito. I usually tell her "tough," but Maximo's has both so now we have no more fights about food. Definitely check this place out!

Braintree, MA
I was in the neighborhood visiting a friend when I decided to stop by for some quick take out for the hike from Watertown to Braintree. First, Maximo's is really charming, clean and the staff was really friendly. I had the Hummus/Tabouleh Sandwhich with was really, really, super, extra tasty! And I am a huge Tabouleh snob! It was really fresh. The sandwich was really big and full of tasty goodness! I think I will be visiting my friends in Watertown more often just to drop by Maximo's!

I went to this restaurant because of the good reviews. When I came in I was treated like I was invisible, no greeting. After 10 minutes of not getting a menu and being ignored I left.

I just had the best mediterranean turkey burger I have ever had! The sauce was knock your socks off good. I am a bit of a food snob, so I care a lot about how my food looks. The presentation was awesome.

Review from Marissa F.
Millbury, MA
We decided to try Maximo's for lunch one day at work. The menu offered a ton of different healthy options to choose from and a wide variety of flavors. I chose the chicken, goat cheese, roasted red pepper, and spinach sandwich on a Portuguese roll. It was DELICIOUS! Others chose salads which looked amazing and full of toppings! The grilled cheese sandwich with the fried egg looked out of this world, and according to the person who ordered it, it tasted as good as it looked. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something different in the Watertown area!

I'd like this place to succeed- these folks are very nice, and they've got some good stuff going. The burritos, for instance, are pretty good. I've had the burgers twice now. A couple of months ago the one I had wasn't bad (not great either, but passable), but last night's was just... not a good thing. Spongey, rubbery, tasteless. My guess is that it's the meat itself, as considerable care seems to go into their food prep. And it's not like it made me sick or anything. But burger isn't something you can skimp on.

I've only been to Maximo's twice, but everything I've gotten has been very good. The grilled veggie burrito is my favorite so far. Very reasonable prices and good quality food. It clearly hasn't been discovered yet, as it's been very quiet each time I go. But I think it's good enough to stick around for a long while.

Review from Paul m.
Randolph, MA
Very over rated so it must be mostly locals doing the ratings that give this place 5 stars thats pretty funny stuff. In any case i walk in and nobody is in front of me except the friendly guy at the register to take my order and well from order to receiving it took at least 15 - 20 minutes mid day on a dead saturday just too long. Oh it was just a grilled chicken sandwich. Not sure where they can claim healthy. Nothing in the place I saw was healthy. All the stuff was non-organic, high sugar, dairy, gluten. So where is the healthy stuff then? It's not it is just not a papa gino's franchise thats all. So I said where is the gluten free option's or healthy version of the menu and somebody hand wrote a g next to some items and they said oh we can make it gluten free and leave out the bread hahahah lol uhhh no! I can do that at home why waste time comming here a sandwich if so called is healthy include gluten-free bread lol whats the point of dumping a piece of protein on a plate? In any case just another store getting local sympathy or being something other then a sloppy pizza joint with friendly service thats all. 5 star ratings are just locals who don't get out and anything thats not terrible and is local gets a high rating so forget those ratings. 3 star but slow service and average conventional non-organic non gluten free stuff thats high in sugar if your into that version of healthy lol good luck every restaurant in america is the same.
