four words this restaurant means to me: late night sushi love!

i've only been to late night sushi. that starts after 9pm every night. the food and service are consistent. i usually go a bit earlier to avoid line ups. when the waiters see that i have the late night sushi page up, one particular waiter always comes to take our orders usually 10 min before 9pm.

beef udons, beef sashimi, and 5-pieces of (seafood) sashimi are all less than $5. miso soup is 89 cents.

    one word: awesome.

I really wanted to like this place after reading good things about the place.

Our service was just fine and the staff was very attentive.

    But the food....

My himachi was still half frozen, which makes it impossible to enjoy so it had to sit there the whole meal until it finally thawed out. The Toro wasn't really Toro but some other slice of tuna that was a bit rough and chewy. The Miso soaked black Cod was not too bad but not that great. My spicy scallop hand rolls were covered in so much spicy sauce that's all I could taste. The house roll was pretty damn good though.

I just wasn't impressed, especially with the Sashimi.

Parking seems to be a big issue but we lucked out and got rock star parking in front but noticed throughout the whole dinner that there were lots of jockeying for parking going on.

If you go during the day, it's quite pricey, but their portions are still huge.
I ordered take out once, a bento box combo, and it literally came in 3 take out styrofoam boxes!

Late night is always the best.  Definitely a good alternative to all the all you can eat places around.  For around the same price, you get better quality food, better service, and an overall experience.

Parking is absolutely horrible here though, so do come early (late night starts at 9) and avoid the huge line ups at the door as well!

Highly recommend: Crab and Tobiko Salad, Beef Sashimi, Oyster Motoyaki.  Everything else is good too!!!

The best thing about this place is the 9pm menu featuring sushi for 89 cents. It's pretty well the only time I come here with friends. Altho not limited to sushi specials it tends to be the only thing I usually order. The seafood on each piece is pretty substantial. Quality & service is good. Their cooked food items are OK but I haven't ordered those as much. A great place to go at 9 if u want to keep it economical. Be aware it tends to get busy around 9 esp on Fri & Sat so prepare to wait a bit for seating.

I definitely don't get why the reviews are so good for this place.

The main thing Matsuyama has going is the price... the sushi is cheap (like $1.19 a piece!).  But that being said, I also want my food to taste good and to have decent service, and this restaurant doesn't deliver on either.

We came in for a late lunch and it was quiet.  We were seated quickly but the server forgot our drinks and our food sat at the sushi bar for awhile before the server came over with it.

The menu has a good selection of items but honestly it was pretty bland.  Hubby and I shared some a la carte sushi, one of the maki combos and some individual maki rolls.  The rice is a bit too densely packed/wrong texture and the cucumber has a funny aftertaste.  The fish is average in quality but the unagi was decent.

Although we both ate lunch for $25-ish including tip, I'd suggest spending a little more and heading to Seto in the neighboring complex.  Once you've been there, I'm sure you won't come back here.

People often take the old faithfuls for granted.

This place has been around for a while.  I've been here many many times.  My niece and nephew love it here...when they were younger, standard fare was tempura udon.  Now they've diversified--  chicken teriyaki, sushi etc. and it's still consistently good.

Stopped in for a late night dinner with friends.  After 9 pm, they have an extensive list on "special".  They were packed but accomodating.  We got there at 9:30 and waited about 5 minutes.

I had some sushi-- saba, tuna, negitoro, etc.  Nigiri only sets you back 89 cents (I believe) after 9 pm and the fish is fresh and substantial.

The oyster motoyaki is excellent if you're into motoyaki.

    Tempura is always good.

My friend ordered a nice looking beef sashimi.

My cousin had a large, authentic looking katsu don that was quickly devoured.

In a city full of Japanese restaurants and 'all you can eat' places where quality takes a back seat, this place is consistently good.

Decent place for late night non-AYCE sushi.

Ordered the usual suspects and some beef sashimi. Quality of everything was definitely above the how-do-they-make-any-money-AYCE places. Service was quick and pleasant. Always a welcome surprise in Richmond.

Cheap, late night after 9pm menu.  I'd say this was good average sushi, and probably wouldn't ever give this place 5 stars for the food, but more for the convenience, cheap price (after 9pm(, and volume of food you get if that makes any sense.  Parking was a bit hectic tonight, but this could be due to the fact it was Canada Day...

They have a couple of TV's on in the corners - personally, I'm not a fan of any place playing TV while eating!

We come here for Saturday afternoon sushi all of the time. Why? The prices are fantastic, the quality is great, the service is above average.

We have been here numerous times. Each time we have had no problem getting a nice table. This is important on a Saturday afternoon...the majority of people in Richmond are driving around looking for a place to eat! If you live in Richmond, you understand where the car traffic is.....

The quality is great. All my preconceived notions of a vacant place are thrown out the door. The fish is great. The prices are below many others. The service makes you happy. We will come again.

One of, if not, the finest in the city, Matsuyama never fails to deliver delicious Japanese food for a great price. I always suggest Matsuyama whenever I'm with company who's undecided on which Japanese place to go to. There's almost always a line up by the door whenever I'm there.

I've had many of the items on their menu and I love all of it. The appetizers and sushi are very tasty, the cones are filling, and the noodles are yummy. One of my favorite items is the Yakisoba. I alternate between chicken and beef on each visit. The sauce is flavorful and the portion is huge. Another favorite are the specialty rolls; I always try to get a different one each time. I barely have dessert on my visits, but when I do, I always get the fried banana with mango or green tea ice cream.

I could only remember one instance where I didn't quite enjoy what I was having. Someone in my party ordered the sashimi platter and the pieces I got was ice cold and had ice on it. I don't think it's supposed to be this cold. This was an isolated incident: I always enjoy their food whenever I'm there.

The servers are very courteous and the service is fast and amazing. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked. Parking can be an issue because they're always busy (the empty lot across from them should be made into a parking lot as there is a huge number of restaurants around that area). I also wish they're open later.

Would I come back? Everyday if I could. I'd rate this restaurant 4.5/5 stars if I could.

I visited this busy into the wee hours hopping sushi restaurant on a blind date. The food quality and selection was amazing, however finding someone to refill those tiny teacups was a bit of a choir.

All in all I certainly would love to visit again in the future.

    Thank you

Went there on a friday night and even though it was busy we got seated pretty quickly.  Not sure if it had to do with choosing to sit at the sushi bar or not though cuz again the place was packed!

Oh sooooo good sushi! Melt in your mouth buttery slices. The sashimi are large large slices and yet priced really reasonable. It was just so fresh and delish. There was so much I wanted to order but didn't know where to begin! The sashimi is a winner for sure.

I loved the beef sashimi. Great rich tangy flavor. The ponzu sauce I think they use certainly ain't the ponzu sauce they have in Cali. I wonder if I can find out the brand they used.... Anyway I digress. Even if you don't like your steaks rare, this is a must order.

We also ordered our standard bowl of edamame and it was pretty standard. However, our server didnt give us a bowl or plate for our shells. Is that the standard????

We ordered salmon skin handrolls (aka BC rolls) and it was certainly tasty and the salmon skin had more meat than what I'm used too, but the roll could have been a bit more tighter.

we got some sushi and like the sashimi, most of the fish pieces were D-LISH! Definitely can't go wrong. Lots of places try to make the pieces look big with large lumps of rice beds, but this place did it right with large slices of fish instead!!  Although  I think the eel could have been cooked a little longer.

The spider roll was ridiculously HUGE. It was good but they need to ease up on the amount of egg they put in the roll. It took four bites just to finish one roll.

Not that I'm a sake connoisseur at any level, but I was a little surprised that they didn't have a sake menu. Our only option was hot or cold, large or small. Oh well.

Parking regardless if its street or the parking lot was a nightmare by the way... so be patient.

I always drive by this place, since it's right on the corner of the "food-street" Alexandra Road in Richmond, so I finally tried it and heard they have late night sushi after 9pm. Several popular items are discounted, and makes quite a decent meal if you're craving for some good sushi/rolls/sashimi late at night.

The seafood is fresh, service is quick, food comes fast and the restaurant gets quite full as it gets later into the night after 9pm. I would recommend this place!

When I lived in Richmond this was my favorite sushi place to go to! Friendly staff, healthy portions, and a good vegetarian selection. When I moved away, someone told me it burned down and I was a sad panda.

But! Then I went back last year, and it turned out that story was not completely true! The kitchen caught fire, but had long since been repaired :D Yay! My family loves their fat slices of salmon sashimi and always gets 3 orders every time they go. I love their veggie bento box and tempura. Every time I'm in the area, I always stop here.

This place was known for decent prices, good food and good service.  Everyone was very friendly here and the quaintness of the place was rather charming.

I didn't think it would make it back after their big kitchen fire had the place closed, but they've been alive and kicking for years now.

They continue to offer great sushi and other Japanese fare and compete with the other non-AYCE joints around.  Their limited parking can be a bit of a pain, but they're close enough to Lansdowne you can easily just park there and walk across.

The food is good and for the price, you get a lot of it.

The main complaint I have is the service.  It is not acceptable that 2 people in our group of 4 were served their lunch 15 minutes later than the rest. All of us ordered right from the menu with no substitutions so there really was no reason for the delay.

The really annoying part was the fact that the waiters didn't seem to care.

Being a tourist, I have no idea why everyone hates Richmond so much (except it smelled. BAD. my mother even screamed "IT SMELLS LIKE CRAP" so loud people stared) But when I came here, oh my goodness, I was in heaven.  Where I'm from, the portions are SO TINY and just average, so I was amazed when I came to this place.  The price was a bit less expensive than I was thinking, and the sushi platters were so ginormous!!  My family and I ate at this place three days in a row, and it was just fantastic each time.

I really wish this restaurant was part of a chain.. every sushi place I've eaten at after this has just been disappointing.

oh, the parking space was UNBELIEVABLE.  so tiny and crowded!!  But I'm not taking off a star for it, because the food was too good.

I frequent Matsuyama at least 2 times a month, either for lunch or dinner.  Lunch service is always quick and efficient, and while dinner/later evening service can get iffy, it's to be expected when you feature an extensive and inexpensive happy hour menu, and are a favorite for big groups.

But no matter what - the staff are always friendly, and the food quality and quantity will never leave you unsatisfied.  You can get a simple and delicious Chicken Teri Don, or a massive specialty roll, or a Vietnamese combo plate (Specialty #1 is my fave) for under $10 each.

MUST TRY:  I will preach about their Oysters Motoyaki til I'm blue in the face.  Let's face it - there is nothing healthy about an oyster baked in a mayo-butter sauce.  But when you are looking to endulge, just take one bite and you will be hooked. And Matsuyama does it better than anywhere else. Hands down.

Great lunch special for just $7.95 includes miso soup and rice plus a bento box with sashimi, tempura, salad, and sushi rolls, much better than your typical food court burger/fries/pop combo. The tempura was the least oily of any I've tried recently, and the shrimp was done just right. Oysters Motoyaki were also the best I've had in a long time.

Pretty decent sushi place in the midst of cut-rate backwater sushi joints in Richmond.   Not the cheapest place (unless you go for the late night menu after 9pm), but a good place for a good sushi craving.  Ignore the vietnamese stuff at the back of the menu and focus on the sushi bar.    The lunch boxes are generic though, I prefer to freestyle my ordering from the nigiri section, try the spicy tako nigiri.  I like it, you may too....

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Richmond.  Service is very good, and it's one of the few places that not only serves beef sashimi, but does it right.

The prices are very reasonable and the quality of food (specifically the fish) is quite good.  For an "average price" Japanese place they do it good.

The food is good and consistent which is why we go to restaurants (Too many places are good one time and bad the next). There are good bargains if you arrive after 9 PM (Good if you dine late). Parking can be a pain but the Lansdowne mall parking is close. Hard to find the first time but look for the orange awning!

I was so surprised by how terrible my dining experience was. The service was adequate and the prices were reasonable, but the food was pretty awful. We ordered a sushi box, and there was a gaping hole in the fish. I mean, really, holes in the fish? We could see the rice right through it! The quality of the tuna was very poor. It was definitely not sashimi grade. We couldn't even finish the one order of tuna!! It was that awful. The rice was extremely dry. It tasted like it was left out before being shaped or scooped into our bowls. It felt like the grains had a hard exterior! The ikura was dry, mushy, and way too salty. The smoked salmon was also dry and had absolutely no flavor at all. The cuts of sashimi were like slabs. It was a slab of 1/2 inch bait! It had no flavor at all and was very poor quality. It was quantity not quality. Also, parking was extremely hard. We couldn't find a parking spot in the restaurant parking lot, so we had to park in a different area. Definitely not worth the trouble.
