Matignon is a great little french restaurant on St Nicholas Street. The restaurant itself is in a house, but this adds to its charm. Why wouldn't you want to dine beside the fireplace? Despite still being located in 'Yorkville', this restaurant has great food with competitive prices. It's definitely more upscale than Le Paradis, but because the restaurant doesn't fit more than 4-5 tables, you truly get the ultimate intimate dining experience. Moustaffa, the owner/maintre d, is really friendly. He is french moroccan I beleive, and  he brought his 'culinary expertise' from France and opened Matignon.  You can definitely tell, as the food/menu can't get any more French than this!!

Let me start out by commenting on the bread. The bread comes out covered and steaming hot. I don't know if it's home-made but it definitely tastes as fresh! The accompanying butter is incredible. I have made the mistake of filling up on this bread all four times that I have dined here. But, I couldn't help it.I would suggest getting their soup of the day. I have had their squash, mushroom, and even their cold soup in the summer which was delicious. As for the main, I always go for the steak frites. It is simply delicious and you get a fairly generous portion of steak. As for dessert, I would highly recommend the profiteroles.

Matignon is a place you should visit based on ambiance alone.  This is the closest thing to France I have found in Toronto, and since I achingly miss France that is a very good thing.  The restaurant is tiny and off the beaten track, two things that hurt it badly.  I hadn't even heard of it until my sister suggested we go together.  It is a delightful restaurant that you really do want to succeed and the food is quite nice too.  I had the fix prix menu and it was more than enough starting with smoked trout, followed by steak and frites and finished with a slice of gateau for under forty bucks , which I realize isn't cheap but for the quality of food and the excellence of service it is well worth it.  Make it a special night, the bit of class will do you good, honestly, you need to get out more.

Wonderful food, great gentle atmosphere, the best service.

I had the pâté to start, duck with vegetables, and a chocolate cake for dessert. Every single part of my meal was tremendous. A little pricy but they do hand out $20 off coupons after your first visit, which is a lovely gesture, however, they definitely don't need to since everything is beyond great.
