This place is seriously too good. The only place that had a hot dog that could top mateo's was 25 degrees, but for double the price. Cheap, open late, and ridiculously delicious. When I came here I ate about 3 hot dogs. The cream cheese complements the bacon and dogs so well. I'd say my favorite dog was El Grunge. I really thought I would be able to replicate it by buying the same ingredients from stater bros. But apparently it's not possible because they injected heroin into their hot dogs or something.

Is Mateo's Hot Spot still out there? It's disturbing there have been no reviews since Christmas...
As I've not had the pleasure, I gave them a five so my concern doesn't change their rating. -

The award for best hot dog ever goes to..... MATEO'S HOT SPOT!!
They are seriously the juiciest and plumpest hot dogs I've ever had. After watching an episode on The Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, I've been MAD craving a good hotdog. I tried to fulfill my cravings at a Padres game with their jumbo hotdogs, and it did nothing for me.
Then, I came across Mateo's. It's conveniently located right in the heart of PB, a perfect spot after a long night of debauchery. The Spicy Cajun caught my attention immediately. The juicy 'pop' from the first bite made my taste buds go wild. I wanted to savor every bite - the perfectly grilled sausage, the relish, the ketchup... YUM!
Be nice to Mateo! He has to deal with drunk college kids all night long.. I can't imagine that to be too fun...
Tip: They are cash only!Listed in: Stay classy San Diego

Spicy cajun hot dog topped with gobs of cream cheese, bacon, and homemade chili and served in the wee hours of the night. Need I say more?
Actually, yes. This is a hot dog stand that opens at 10:30pm. It served one of the spiciest hot dogs I've ever had. The vendor was extremely friendly and helpful. It's located in pacific beach, San Diego, near all the hip bars and clubs. Wash it down afterwards with a beer at The Dog. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood. -

Yumm yumm yumm!!!!
I am pretty harsh when it comes to reviewing hot dog places so here is a place that makes me truly happy!! I was introduced to this lovely little place a night out in PB and fell in love so much that I had to chase them the next weekend for a hot dog. What have I tried here? The jumbo hot dog wrapped in bacon and cream cheese! I love cream cheese to begin with and though I had always heard people talking about it, I never believed them. Well you better believe I am in LOVE!!! I should thank my friend Nancy when I see her!!! -

I have been to three of Mateo's Hot Spots, depending on where I'm drinking that night, but it doesn't matter the menu is the same and it all comes with casual P.B. friendly attitude. My fav is the bratwurst with grilled onions and cheddar cheese but if I'm cold I go for the homemade chili which is spicy and awesome.
One little tip for those that don't like a drunken maul to get served, get there before the main rush. 10 mins makes all the difference. I don't know how the guys keep sane with the hopeless drunks they have to serve, but they do and we are all the better because of it. Carry on the great work guys and see you in the Silver Fox next thursday. Love you and your dogs!! -

This Hot Dog Stand is frequented by many of PB's drunken and stoned residents. The location and hours of thie place make this the perfect destination for San Diego's intoxicated youth, but don't let that little fact take away from the quality of the hot dogs.
Mateo's Hot Spot is a late-night hot dog stand that is appropriately located in front of the The Dog bar and it is next to Typhoon and Tavern.
Nothing hits the spot after a couple of beers like a hot dog from Mateo's Hot Spot. Of course, I don't eat hot dogs, but that's no worry because Mateo's serves veggie sausages and hot dogs and they are absolutely delicious, especially when served with extra relish, onion and that damn good sauerkraut.
Mateo is the owner and operator of the stand and he is way cool guy, especially considering he deals with PB's young drunkards all night long. -

My heart stopped the other night for a moment the first time I had a dog at Mateo's. Its the correct response however since what I ordered was a Heart Attack Dog. Consisting of bacon, nacho cheese, grilled onions, and chili all on a polish sausage, by the time I was done, I was seeing spots and having problems breathing, but I still wanted more. After seeing other possibilities include spicy sausages, cream cheese, and sour kraut, Mateo's holds a certain sick part of my soul when it comes to late night cuisine.
Street food nirvana. Get some. -
Review from Joe M.
After a long night of boozing, I tend to crave a bite to eat. Fortunately, Mateo's Hot Spot was just around the corner to satiate my hunger pains. Located in front of some of Pacific Beach's most divey bars this wiener stand attracts some of the town's most toasted patrons.
Of the extensive menu, I decided to order the El Grunge, a polish with bacon and cream cheese. I've never tried my hot dogs with cream cheese before but much to my surprise it was pretty tasty! You wouldn't think that it would add much, or maybe even make the hot dog too heavy, but cream cheese has such a mild flavor that it seems like it would go with just about everything.
Needless to say, I am now a convert and in the future I'll hold the kraut and opt for the cream cheese. If you're in PB and need a great after drinking treat, march over to Mateo's and grab a cream cheese polish!

This place is definitely a must go if you are a college student that has just learned how good food tastes when you're a little buzzed. Get the Heart Attack for sure, or ask them to pick something out for you. They know how it's made. My favorite is the Cajun. But, I haven't tried them all yet. LOL I hope you enjoy. =]
OH yea, make sure you go when they are open. Last time i checked it was only on the weekends from like 9pm-2am or something like that. Yea, just call them because they are a stand. I missed them twice before i got to finally try it. hahaha. -

Words cannot express how much I love this man. He was there for me on those nights when Typhoon kicked me out for being boozy floozy. He helped me sober up with the notorious "El Grunge". I've introduced this delicious concoction to all my drunk friends and yes, they were quite hesitant (well not so hesitant because you can easily convince intoxicated people to do almost anything) to try a hot dog slathered in cream cheese and bacon...but boy, they were believers after this. Best of all you can take your exquisite cuisine over to the Trader Joe's parking lot, where you can meet other drunkasses eating on the ground. A great place to pick up on dudes!
Sometimes when I'm short on cash, the hot dog man helps me out. Therefore, I appreciate him and his business. Give this man mad tips for serving your drunkasses...he's one of the coolest guys in my book! -

Mateo's Hot Dogs are the best. Both Matt and Mo are the coolest guys in Southern California. I went there after dinner once (full) and still pounded a hot dog (sober) and it was excellent! They have all sorts of excellent hot dog enhancements, for instance you can "Grizzle your Schnizzle." I live in SF but try to visit it every time I am in PB... and I'm not being nice because Mateo is my Uncle :-D

I have visited Mateo's stand many a night after grabbin a few beers at the dog with friends. The dog's are delicious and Mateo is always super friendly. My favorite is the "el grunge" which comes with a slice of bacon and cream cheese. i also reccomend throwen some onions and japapenos on there. Didnt sound like the most appetizing to me at first, but trust me you will get hooked. Keep up the good work Mateo!!

Perfection!! I hit this cart up after some beverages at the Silver Fox. FANTASTIC veggie dogs with all the standard toppings: onions, relish, kraut, nacho OR shredded cheese. He's got some unique ones too (cream cheese). I was in Hotdog Heaven!!

I have tried everything on the menu here except for the brat, and everything hit the spot. Granted I always have a few drinks in me, it is cheap, big... and not mexican food. If you tend to eat late night, and it comes up later in the night, I would stick to el grunge (my personal favorite).

Matt always has the best dogs in town. A secret that most PB drunks don't know: They cure hangovers. The selection is incredible and the service is impeccable. He spares nothing when it comes to quality toppings and dogs. These hot dogs are a PB landmark and no night on the town is complete without one.

These dogs are amazingly delicious. I've had gourmet hot dogs at other places and these are in a league of their own. (at least in San Diego). I always order the Hot Dog with cream cheese and bacon. They have more options on the menu and other toppings you can add. The cooks are friendly and love return customers. (they'll hook you up).

OH Snap!!!! this hot dog stand ROCKS!!! the boyfriend and i popped by on the way back to his place. I hadn't eaten ALL day and was already in bitch mode for my boyfriend not respecting my needs from the start of the night. I got 2 dogs, the el grunge and the philly. they were both great but would highly recommend the el grunge, cream cheese and bacon mmm......so good. (:

A variety of hot dogs centered on cream cheese. Surprisingly amazing. I'm probably going against the usual crowd here, but it would be cool if they had additional times during the day that weren't so late.

I LOVE this hot dog stand. It has the best hot dogs ever, even better than Pinks Hot Dogs in LA. I usually stop by at least once every two weeks to get a hot dog during my study breaks at night. I always get a Heart Attack(bacon, grilled onions, chili, and cheese) with some relish to top it off and its f--king amazing.
The best part about getting a hot dog from here is to see all the drunk people in PB at night. Everyone is pretty chill, and I often feel out of place cause I'm usually in my PJs and sober.
So, if you're up late and need a late night snack. Definitely drop by and grab a hot dog! -

This is my favorite place to grab a late night snack on my way home. They have the best chili, for chili cheese dogs. They are super quick, so I have not yet encountered too long of a line.

i saw him setting up and went at 9:30. i ordered a heart attack. he didnt' have warm chili yet, so wouldn't sell me one. since i live across the street i told him i'd be back in 15 minutes. he insisted on either giving me a discount or hooking me up. that's the kind of guy matt is. i refuse to take any discount.. he deserves a lot more than he charges.
