A year after posting a negative review, Max, one of the owners of Mat& Max contacted me after discovering my review here on yelp. He offered to make the last visit I had up to me, and here is my new experience.

To be fair, my experience today was excellent, an easy 5-star, but I don't feel it would be fair to increase my rating to a 5-star yet, as this was a comped visit, with everyone working in the salon being very aware of my earlier negative experience. I imagine they were walking on eggshells to some extent.

I believe Stephanie (the lady I saw this afternoon) would treat any and all clients as well no matter the circumstance. She was very personable, with a friendly demeanor. I felt that she listened to my needs, my lifestyle, my concerns and the hopes I had for my hairstyle, today and for the future.

I arrived a bit late, they have 3 salons in 3 connecting malls (one each in Les Cours Mont-Royal, in Place Montreal Trust and in Les Ailes de La Mode), once I arrived, we discussed possible hair colours. I prefer my hair a darker shade, preferably a little warmer than it was and she explained colours that would be complementary to my skin tone. We chose a colour and then started discussing hairstyles.

I have a few things I require: I don't like hair in my face, so if I have bangs, they need to be short enough that they don't end up in my eyes in a week or if I am growing them out, I need to have a style that works with me pinning my bangs back or cut so that they sweep to the side nicely.

I am lazy. I hate doing my hair and I work from home, so sometimes that means I won't even comb my hair until someone knocks on the door. I don't like using tons of product or using too many tools. That said, on occasion, I want something that can be fancied up with a little effort.

Other than that, I am fairly easy and not surprisingly, Stephanie met all of my requirements and even gave me some tips on keeping my hair out of my face.

I walked away very pleased with my sexy, low-maintenance cut and my subtle mahogany hair colour.

I went in earlier this morning to get my roots colored.  I have been doing this every month for at least 15 years at different salons.  What happened today was the first time this has happened to me  and I write this as don't want anyone else to go through the same thing.
The hair color was fine but I have ended up with my so much dye on my forehead and my left cheek, that i am embarrassed to step out looking like this.
I told the person who was going to do my color that she should take care and not get any dye at the hairline and could she put some cream to prevent it, which she did.  The color she applied came below the line of the cream.
When my hair was washed there was a dark thick line outlining my face and patches of color on my left cheek.
I was very annoyed and told her that i came in to get my hair dyed not my face.  She told me she would get it off and brought a solution and towel with which she scrubbed so hard they she has skinned me in places,  and the color was still visible.
I got very angry at that point and the receptionist came over to see what was happening.  She told me it would go off in a day.  I mentioned her that i cannot stay holed up at home for day and how could this happen.  The manager comes over and asks me to calm down that there is no reason for me to get angry.  Another hairstylist who started drying my hair argued that whatever else a good job had been done and I shouldn't get angry but that I should appreciate the good job that was done in coloring my hair.  I think I was just stunned into silence.  There really didn't seem much point in saying anything!!
i had also wanted my hair blow dried and this was done professionally by a very nice lady.  She has blow dried my hair on a previous occasion and I have no complaints against her.
I write this as I would hate for anyone else to experience what happened to me today.

I was visiting Montreal from Toronto and I was looking for a place to get my hair done. I typically get lots of highlights on my regrowth but i'm open to change. One particular day, i found out i was going to continue my road trip east instead of returning to Toronto so I felt impulsive and walked into this place to see if they're take a walk-in. (Not so luckily) they took me in. They said I didn't need highlights and that i could get an all-over colour. So i agreed to get that done.  There was a bit of a language barrier even though I'm fluent in French, I didn't know what the word "toner" was. The lady (who's name i didn't get but i don't think she was a colourist...) put a highlift on my roots AND an inch+ on the blonde (which was already a level 10/the lightest blonde). I expressed concern about damage and that I didn't think that was a good idea. She kept telling me it was OK. She disappeared after the application and i sat there in a quiet, empty salon for an hour. When she washed the highlift off, I had an orangy-yellow stripe where my roots were and yellow on my once-level 10 blonde. I watched in shock as she told me it would tone down with time. This is when i asked for TONER. Every time I asked for toner, she'd respond with "..colour?"
She had natural dark brown hair, so I guess she wouldn't know what a toner was...
WAIT A SECOND, this woman works in a freaking HAIR SALON in Montreal. I am not the only person with blonde hair in this city. WTF?
So I settled for "..colour?" HOPING it was what i knowandlove -toner-.
    ..And i was wrong.

She ended up putting a warm level 8 blond on my entire head.

I left with dark strawberry blond hair with terrible roots.

I put my hood up in the salon and felt like crap on the metro. I spent the next 5 hours washing and rewashing my hair and using my purple shampoo on the horrible mess I payed $60 for. I eventually ended up with extremely fragile yellow hair with the stripe still there.

The next day I went to a salon called Ydem and they knew what toner was! And they were so friendly and amazing. Ydem is now my favourite salon in Canada because they're everything someone with high maintenance hair needs in a salon. So if you're a traveller in Montreal looking to get your hair done, DO NOT GO TO MAT & MAX.
    Go to Ydem.
    Trust me.
