Masala Zone is a chain of five restaurants in London.* I was hesitant to go, but we had to duck in out of the rain, we were hungry, and we didn't want to spend crazy money on dinner. I expected chain restaurant food but what I got instead was a nice surprise.

I ordered the thali, which meant I could sample a variety of different dishes, including two curries of my choice, a potato dish, a corn-tomato dish, raita, a generous portion of aromatic rice (in fact all of the portions were generous) daal, a chapati, a papadum and chutney. I chose a veg curry with lotus root, which was delicious. The daal was better than much that I've been served, some in allegedly fine dining establishments. I also got the pepper chicken, which was like a tasty two-alarm fire in my mouth. I cured that with an apple juice and mint concoction, which I plan to go in and buy daily for the rest of my stay here. There was also a large selection of wine, beer and mixed drinks.

What MZ lacks is character. The ambiance is all store bought and since you can't buy soul, they are out of luck in that department. If I had one nearby, I could overlook that shortcoming at least a couple of times a month in exchange for tasty Indian food at reasonable prices. I would miss the filth and the surly waiters, though. I really would. (I have issues.)

I have to come clean here. This is not a totally un-biased review because after my dinner tonight I decided I would have to kiss Masala Zone's ass and get permission to open a franchise in the states. If I opened a few of these in SF and surroundings, I'd make so much money that I could decoupage every Prius in the Bay Area with $100 dollar bills and still have enough left over to fill AT & T Park to the brim.

Is it still called AT & T Park or has that company collapsed in the last twenty four hours, too? I can't leave the country for two minutes without those kids getting into some kind of trouble! George W! Dick!! You two go straight to your room THIS. INSTANT.

*That's London, England, not London, Ontario Canada - as Yelp keeps insisting it must be when I input the address. Yelp isn't Transatlantic (yet!)
