They used to be on the main drag in Steveston and when we came again a few years ago and saw it all boarded up we flew into a rage and tried to start a race riot against a few poor canucks right there on the sidewalk. One of the more enlightened locals sheepishly pointed at a small sign we neglected on the window informing of the new location a few blocks away. Hey we never tried to hide the fact that we are indeed Americans and that means shoot first ask questions later. Needless to say this act of goodwill imparted by the local fishermen worked to save themselves a thrashing as we burned rubber down to the new location where cases of curry pasties, sausage rolls and meat pies awaited us.
Apparently the rent went up and these folks were forced out of their quaint, fishing village location and are now in a strip mall. We're glad they are still around and urge all to drop in often before this great institution is lost.
Cute little shop with friendly staff - nice selection of British goods just outside the really touristy part of Steveston.
My finds here have been Kit Kats! On my trip to Japan earlier this year, I learned that there are a huge variety of Kit Kats out there, mostly unique to Japan, but some to other countries as well. I was able to pick up the UK versions of the mint and orange Kit Kats here... a bit pricey, but the mint ones are to die for!
Marked down a star since a pack of the Kit Kats I bought was expired already - only realized it when I got home and was about to dig in. I haven't gotten sick, but personally I think expired good should be pulled off the shelves rather than being sold at regular price.
It's like drinking Britain up from a teacup!
Sipping a spot of tea that tastes like every breakfast I can remember from the UK, and nibbling on a meat pie, I'm in the middle of high tea... in my living room. Darn, I wish I had splurged on biscuits and sweets like I had intended. Orange kit kats, pickled cabbage, Marks and Spencer teas, frozen fish pies; they're all on the grocery list for next time. And those pies have left no doubt, if the queen every pays me a visit, she will be impressed! Spot on! Cheerio!
I first ventured into the British Home Store 6 years ago in its old location a block south. I had recently returned from a European adventure and was experiencing those back to reality blues. Thankfully I discovered this little gem.
I have been back a few times over the years and have had the exact same experience. Friendly talkative staff, great pies to eat there or take away, and just an all around good feeling of being in an UK shoppe on a Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately I am now going to have to drive here more often as I am addicted to their Marks and Spencer fair trade tea. Makes you feel like royalty slurping this cuppa brilliance.
This is a classic local shop that is definitely supported by the community. Stop in for a visit, you won't be disappointed.
One word: Pasties. A case full of delicious & widely varied flavor pasties and pies, rounded out with scotch eggs, sausages & bangers. Get a fab steak & kidney pie for about $3.80!
An excellent selection of harder to find British food supplies & treats: Monster Munch, Murray Mints, Arnott's, Golden Syrup, Gordon's Mustard & a bunch of their sauce mixes. Tons of tea, of course & clotted cream.
You'll also find Golliwogs, Football supporter scarves/banners & some Royal paraphernalia.
The good ladies here are sweet, helpful, and call you "luv", if they like you. Maybe not the biggest selection of British goods, but still - an excellent variety & again, I say - PASTIES!
