When I was a kid I had grown-up (maybe even *senior*) taste in cookies: digestives and shortbread.
Yep.
I was always popular for school lunchbox swaps.
Little has changed. I'm still crazy for shortbread cookies, and Mary MacLeod's is tops. To drill that home, allow me to yell in this virtual forum: TOPS!
I love these cookies. Usually I like fancy flavours and surprise-me combinations, and subscribe to a the-bigger-the-better mentality, but here I love the mini plain shortbread best:
- the size is perfect for a nibble or three
- the texture is amazing (a mix of flours, or does dough just turn to edible magic at Mary's touch?)
and
- the flavour is buttery, complex and not too sweet
There are other flavours, however, like the signature chocolate crunch, hazelnut, dutch chocolate, and butterscotch shortbread fingers. So: brew up a massive pot of tea and get to discovering your favourite!
Why-I-want-to-adopt-Mary-as-my-grandma-point: my friend mentioned that she was taking the streetcar along Queen one rainy day, and Mary was out by the streetcar stop offering water-logged TTC passengers shortbread treats. Random acts of delicious kindness get me every time.
Yelp note: If you're not often on Queen East (the cozy, charming shop is just east of the DVP), Mary MacLeod's shortbread is also available at other locations around Toronto. I've seen them for sale at the One of A Kind Art Show and year-round at Summerhill Market. -

MMMMMM SHORTBREAD!
What more is there to say? (:
Mary MacLeod's Shortbread is a very cute little shop that offers delicious little treats!
I love the mini chocolate crunch! Just thinking about them while yelping about them really makes me wish I had some sitting beside me right now!
They come in a cute little package, that makes you feel guilty when you open them because it feels like you destroyed the perfect piece of perfection.
The only downfall for me is the location and they are pricey too. I will pay the price to treat myself to these babies though!

Amazing shortbread... and I loves me a good shortbread! The more plain chocolate crunch ones are my favourites.
These cookies come nicely packaged and make good gifts. They aren't cheap, but they are worth it! If you're on a budget, on the weekends they often have "dollar bags". For a mere dollar, you get a random sampling of a couple different kinds of cookies.
If you or someone you'd like to treat is a shortbread fan, this place is bound to please. -

WOW!!! This place is fantastic!
I had never tried Mary MacLeod's Shortbreads until this past Christmas season. I was looking to get some really good cookies for my grandma who just loves shortbreads. I came across this place and ordered in advance.
I got:
plain shortbread
chocolate chunk shortbread
hazelnut shortbread
When I got there to pick up my order, they cashier also let me try one as I have had one - I tried the plain shortbread. It was outstanding - by far the best shortbread I've ever had. So light, and moist - just heaven!
My favourite is the hazelnut shortbread
This place is a must try for anyone who loves a good shortbread cookie! -

I find this little cookie shop ultra-adorable! The little blonde girl inside was equally nice. I got a dozen shortbread cookies, plus additional boxes requested by friends (most of us live in the GTA).
Flavours I tried: whole wheat walnut crunch, chocolate crunch, hazelnut chocolate crunch, dutch chocolate crunch, coffee crunch, orange crunch, and mint chocolate crunch. What gives all these cookies the "crunch" moniker is the addition of toffee bits. Personally, I am a HUGE fan of crunchy toffee (think Skor and Daim) - so these cookies are a winner with me! Delicious! Sweet and scrumptious! Be warned though - they are very expensive (due to quality butter and other ingredients). But the orgasm is worth it. -

Coming out of a Coffee Shop and walked 2 steps, I stopped and noticed a SHORTBREAD shop and started reading the outside notes on the door. Following behind me from the Coffee Shop a lady with hands full of Coffee asked me nicely if I can open the door to this place. Sure!
As I opened the door for her, she invited me in and thanked me. She offered me a Cookie(Chocolate Crunch, $1.75) and went inside the back while the friendly staff at the counter of this small cute Shortbread/Cookie shop offered me a free Cookie from a good selection.
I didn't even know Toronto has a Gourmet Shortbread Shop so that itself is a new feature to me. It's been awhile since I had Shortbread and I just have to say that it has never been my type of go-to Food. From a non-expert point-of-view, it's average however I did enjoy the crunch factor.
Checking out their website, it does have that Gift element similar to Cupcake Shops but as you know there are plenty of Cupcake Shops in T.O and barely any Shortbread if any others exist. -

This is how you know that Leslieville is gentrifying.
Went here on a brunch run to the Leslieville and decided to take a stroll in the neigbourhood.
This store, quaint, small, storefront looks like the tourist type you would see at Niagra-on-the-lake, kind of like the perennial Christmas store.
Went in and found out it's a tiny cubical counter with a large factory back. The front has two older white ladies packaging cookies for the woman in with the louis vuitton handbag. She was getting cookies for the holdiays..for a LOT of people. The total came up to tover 300$.
yes, that's the kind of money you throw down for shortbread.
But alas, tis not just merely shortbread. My friend called it "the best short bread" he has ever had. He described it as "Buttery without being too heavy; crunchy wihtout being thick (like the canned shortbread); a rich treat"
*Note that I would describe the taste myself but, to be honest, I hate shortbread and it tasted just like a pretty damn good cookie to me)
They have traditional shortbread cookies and some nummy flavors that include mint inspired and orange infused.
At , I think, a little over 2$ a cookie it's a nice small treat.
Get a couple cookies and walk down to Dark Horse for an espresso for a nice afternoon hangout with a friend. -

Not bad. I tried it after seeing reviews of this place being positive, and the taste was quite decent.
Not sure how they stay in business just selling shortbread, but good product nonetheless. -

This shortbread is amazing. I've bought it as a gift and it has been very well received. I go here as often as I let myself.
