I cashed in some Marriott points and came up here for a romantic weekend (awhile back). My overall experience with Marriott's (mostly Residence and Courtyard) is that they are comfortable, yet predictable in terms of room design and amenities. Hence, I have a pretty standard expectation of what my guest experience will be.
In this case, I was pleasantly surprised. The room was very comfortable and roomy and was cleverly layed out. The free breakfast was generous and varied and in a very nice room. And although the hotel is a bit off the beaten path, it is still a close walking distance to Robson Street, the West End, Stanley Park, and even Granville Island (via the water taxis).
As far as future romantic getaways, I would first try the Listel. But this place works too and offers some solid family-friendly options if say I decided to bring my son up too. -

My sister and her then fiance's original hotel reservations got double booked at the Pan Pacific somehow, so they ended up finding a very inexpensive last minute deal here and stayed the night. The location is way convenient -- right by Davie Street and a few blocks away from Granville Street near the Granville Bridge and the Burrard Birdge. Central.Not a very fancy or trendy hotel, but it is very clean and a Marriott which means you get the points and the quality you expect. They got a breakfast inclusive meal and saved enough money for a nice meal out the next day.
