The epitome of a 5 star culinary experience. Do not be fooled by the deli in the name. The chef and his team exceed expectations with cuisine, ambience and service. Enjoy the venue while you can as it won't be long until there will be await to dine at markt.

An ethically-minded butcher shop. I can't say enough good things about this place. They sell free range, organically fed meats, many of which are locally sourced. They also offer an array of cheese, frozen soup stock, and other quality food products. Additionally, they run cooking classes. To boot, it's a clean, aesthetically pleasing store with genuinely nice staff. The main butcher once did me a great favour of keeping the place open an extra 30 minutes because I really wanted organice smokies, but couldn't get there before official closing. This kind of above-and-beyond service is rare!

More than just another meat shop with handsome beards behind the curtain, Markt is my new favourite deli find.
I remembered seeing them at the Cedar Farmers Market during the summer, because I loved their logo and packaging for sauces.
When I complemented the guy who helped me on my first visit, about the layout and design of the shop, he thanked me, and told me him and his Dad had built it with their own hands. Ryan, I think his name is. Did that make the bacon taste better? I'm not sure, I mean, how much better can bacon get, really? Especially here, where both times I've been there's been three choices of house made bacon flavours to choose from. So far they have been awesome.
Tonight I made two types of sausage for dinner, Tarragon & Shallot, and another I don't remember the name of, it might have been Turkey Sage. They were the best sausages I've ever eaten. I browned them in a Le Creuset pan, finished them in the oven for 20 min. at 375, and 10 min. at 400. High quality local meat, wonderfully seasoned, amazingly moist.
I also bought two frozen packages of chicken stock, which I used in a split pea soup that came out fabulous. These gentlemen know their stuff.
The shop itself is warm and inviting, I imagine it a great atmosphere for the dinner series they offer. The kitchen glistens in all it's stainless glory behind a wooden wall with a large window emblazoned with their logo. It's beautiful.
A freezer and fridge offer a variety of soups, stocks, local gelato, frozen sausages, fresh local eggs ($4.95/dozen, delicious) and a few other things I imagine change daily, weekly, seasonally.
The shelves are filled with all the usual things you'd expect to find in a deli; mustards, rices, pastas, sauces, chutneys, oils, vinegars and other house made items. Except they aren't usual at all. Rices in every shade, dried beans, and other culinary treasures.
They offer sandwich meats, an array of fresh house made sausages, good selection of cheeses, of which I've only tried the Manchego and really enjoyed it. Nearly everything they offer is sourced locally from small producers. They'll also order quarter or half sides of pork or beef. I think there is a lunch feature daily as well.
Visit their neighbour Bodhi's Artisan Bakery for fresh bread to eat with your cheese. It's a great village-like wood structure complex.
A regular at Nesvog's Sausage & Meats when I'm in Nanaimo, I'm glad they focus on different things, there won't be any deli guilt here. -

This is a sparkling gem of a place; an excellent addition to the local food scene.
I became aware of the Markt guys at the summer farmer's market, where they sell excellent bacon, pulled pork and sausages, as well as fabulous sausage rolls.
The store always smells amazing, from the stocks and stews simmering away in the kitchen. They sell a wonderful selection of fresh and frozen sausages, bacon, pate, a small and good selection of cheeses. They make and sell stock, and fantastic pulled pork. Oh and their chicken pot pies are superb. And if I go there this week I'm sure I'll find something else I've forgotten here.
They have a commitment to local and organic ingredients, and I know they have been working on increasing this, reaching out to local farmers.
They also put on amazing looking gourmet meals each month. I have not been lucky enough to have one yet, but one day, when I save my pennies, I'll definitely be there. They have also just started doing cooking classes and catering, and I'm definitely signing up for a cooking class.
Since I moved to Nanaimo, the local food scene has definitely developed for the better - the farmer's market, some excellent baking and a nice cafe downtown (Petit Chou), and now Markt.
