It's hard to find a butcher shop that is friendly, has an awesome selection, and has lots of local products. All the meats we buy from Market Meats have been of great quality.
But I think what really sold me on this place is the service. Someone is always available to help you when you walk in the shop. If you ever had a question about how to cook a particular meat, they always take the time to answer and provide useful suggestions. I went in with my baby in the stroller one time, and the guy suggested I try feeding my baby ground veal as it is very tender. It turns out that my baby loves veal. I went to buy osso buco one time, and a staff asked if I needed veal stock for the dish. I didn't even know they made their own veal stock, but it was perfect for my dish. Another time I wanted ground veal and they were sold out, so they quickly offered to ground some up on the spot for me. I can go on and on about the great experiences I've had there.
I love their products, their selection, and most of all, their service. -

I'm really picky when it comes to my meat. I was a vegetarian for many years and I am really sensitive to the quality and freshness of my meat.
I love Market Meats because I can be that picky and still find what I need and it tastes amazing without breaking the bank.
They do have slightly higher prices than some of the other butchers in town but everything is fresh, local and the staff know everything there is to know about meat. -

I was a vegetarian in a past life. There I admit it! And there are many nights where there's no meat on the menu (at my eco-friendly conscious request, of course!). But when I am doing a cook up, I want to know that the meat is quality, fresh and local.
I get all of my needs met at Market Meats. With fewer choices for butchers around town, I had to start looking elsewhere for my chicken and chops. (My favourite butcher for chicken, Jackson's on Granville, closed down a few months ago. The owner told me it was due to competition with the grocery stories on the Cambie corridor and high rent prices).
The staff at Market Meats is really knowledgeable about where their meat originates and their chicken is all free range. And it's always a nice treat to have the meat cut to order. I love coming home and opening up the brown parcel as you're about to cook ... ahh the feeling of gourmet.
At first, I thought everything was overpriced- however, upon closer examination, for the quality and localness of it - it just makes cents. (Yes, yes, pun intended!) -

We procured our standing rib roast for Crimbo dinner here and all who supped at our table that evening were well pleased by the star of the table.
Now, preparation and cooking have a lot to do with what is finally plated but starting off with a wonderful specimen of meat helps tremendously.
I really enjoyed the team at Market Meats. They know meat. They love meat. They love talking about meat and were able to exchange ideas on and experiences preparing and cooking meats. What's more, they admitted to barbecuing in the dead of winter - like yours truly - when others state that it's not barbecuing season.
I'm sorry, barbecuing is not a seasonal thing. Barbecuing is a lifestyle, a way of life that should not be constrained by weather or calendars.
I wholeheartedly endorse Market Meats' meat and applaud their dedicated team. -

I have to say that my favourite aspects of this butcher are the staff. They're awesome! Super friendly, helpful and remember you. They also often have good specials on which is nice. There's a good selection of marinated choices and they do a tasty roasted chicken which is great for nights that you need fast food without sacrificing quality. Plus there's a green grocer almost next door for all the veggie items you may need.

The New York strips the butcher suggested were some of the best we have eaten, anywhere. And we are from Iowa, where we brag on our beef. The cuts were triple aged Angus, and now She knows that it does make a difference.

I love Market Meats. The owner is extremely friendly and helpful and the rest of the staff is great too. And the best part is that they all know what they're talking about. Sometimes when I ask for a particular cut of meat at the grocery store they look at me like I just ordered a filet of Minotaur. But not here. Here they're knowledgeable.
They carry all the usual meats and some unexpected cuts as well, all top-quality and fresh. if you need something really special they can order it in for you.
They also sell various spices, rubs, sauces, and accompaniments. They have some really nice freshly made mozzarella and some pasta salads and other deli items.
The prices are a bit high, but you really are paying for service and quality. It's clear that cleanliness and sanitation are very important to them, and when it comes to raw meat that *really* matters. Local, organic, healthy.
If you're having a special dinner or a dinner party, you definitely will want to consider this place. They have pre-marinated meats and stuffed steaks and such.
Love it! -

The staff is knowledgable and courteous -- they know their product, and are happy to provide advice if you don't know how to cook a particular cut of meat (just ask them).

The first thing that struck me about Market Meats in Kitsilano were the super friendly and helpful staff. North Americans are clearly starved for good service because people always seem to be surprised at a level of service above a grunt and an exchange of cash. That being said, Market Meats has much more to offer than great customer service: Excellent quality meats and the know-how to get them onto your table!
Beautiful cuts of beef, pork, veal and poultry including turkey and goose as well as free range eggs will satisfy your cravings and the exotic choices of muskox, venison, bison, ostrich and emu, quail, pheasant, guinea fowl and even frogs legs! I adore frogs and the idea of eating their legs makes me slightly queasy but I'll give anything a try once and I hear they're tasty...like chicken!
Some of these might appear slightly intimidating, but the butchers and specialists here can suggest cooking techniques and meal suggestions for your next culinary masterpiece. They also carry fresh barbecued chickens, stuffed potatoes and a steak and prawn combo for easy dinner solutions. Along with local and international gourmet specialties from Dean and Deluca, Emeril Lagasse and Terrapin Ridge, Market Meats carries a fresh selection of seafood choices, ready-marinated cuts of meat for easy home preparation, a delicatessen with cold cuts, salads and olives.
Clearly, Market Meats is the place to go to educate yourself on meat and all its specialties! -

They know me by name, they get to know your likes and dislikes, they've got amazing bison, musk ox, and other large non-cow ungulates. Giddyap.

Market Meats breaks down the Styrofoam and plastic wrap barrier that stands between most of us and our meat products. Rather than picking up a pre-wrapped package at the grocery store, the store is a far more conscious way to buy butchered goods. Expect good advice.
The fresh turkeys are popular for the big holiday seasons. Plus the reasonably sized seafood section is quite a surprise. A quick look at their extensive marinated meats really impressed me with the variety (from tandoori chicken to Maui ribs and Cajun wings -- sounds like a Superbowl party).
Market Meats goes beyond being a butcher to be, hmm, more of a protein boutique? I'll have to think more on that term. -

After 18 months of not eating meat ( beef, lamb, pork), I finally succumbed to my boyfriend's whining. After researching (courtesy of yelp, naturally) meat markets, I finally decided on this place and was glad that I did. We tried the tenderloin and they were heavenly. Even my carnivorous boyfriend agrees. Sure, their prices are not exactly budget but it is well worth it for the quality that you get.

I was not impressed with the slick talking guy that sold us on what was going to an amazing steak, he said it is probably going to be the best I have ever tasted... at $30 each steak.... Well well even a slick butcher can sell ice to an Eskimo. Ya I did have an just ok experience prior to this one but I am not a fan of this Meat Market.
