Mario, you make me smile. You make me smile one of those "ice cream smothered all around your mouth and possibility the tip of your nose" kind of smiles. The kind often found on the in-the-moment-enjoying tiny humans that we call kids.
Not only to do present me with a plethora or interesting, yummy and eye-catching flavors, I especially love you for your sugar-free gelato options. Every once in a while, sanity escapes me and I go on a no-sugar bend. And their coconut or cinnamon sugar-free gelato makes me feel like a normal person who does normal things like eat ice-cream.
And your staff are always friendly and happy to pass me a teeny weeny little tester spoon or some intriguing new flavor. Of which they have many. -

Wall-to-Wall frozen deliciousness - on a summertime Sunday afternoon a quick stop at Mario's for a two scoop waffle-cone (usually mint chocolate chip and a scoop of something a little more adventurous) before a walk along the seawall is, I would hazard to say, a fantastic idea.
I associate Mario's with the onset of summer sun and for that fact alone .... four enthusiastic stars. -

Those of you who remember Willy Wonka landing in the chocolate factory could probably see yourselves landing in Mario's and landing in the gelato, sorbettos, frozen yogurt factory. I thought I died. To me, this was just another gelato place. However, further research shows that Mario's has grown throughout the years expanding its line of products to include over 500 items--shipping to all sorts of restaurants and stores.
Go figure.
My childhood place to eat delicious sorbet and getting my sugar fix, is a corporation. It doesn't matter. Their special ties of gelato (Italian ice creams), sorbettos (sorbet), frozen yogurt range from sweet, to tart, to creamy, to fruity. I remember grabbing a pint each of red-bean and some chocolate concoction after woofing down several small samples of what ever was behind the counter. Suffice it to say that I made it home to Burnaby without making a gooey mess on Skytrain--- I probably would have licked it off the floor. Maybe not. -

Finally, a beautiful sunny spring day in Vancouver. Even though it was a brisk 49 degrees Fahrenheit, I felt like celebrating with gelato and a walk along the waterfront.
Luckily for me, Mario's Gelati completely fit the bill. Mario's is situated just two short blocks from amazing views of the water, cityscape, and mountains. There's an enormous range of flavors that you can sample from before deciding on what you want. I went with "Coconut Surprise" which was super yummy coconut laced with mango.
I highly recommend getting a cone to go and exploring the surrounding neighborhood. This highly contentious plot of land was built up to house athletes during the Winter Olympics and now is in weird limbo land of receivership.
Like me, you can enjoy your creamy gelato while pondering politics, city planning, urban development, and all of life's mysteries. -

I went here with a group after a mom & baby fitness class at Creekside Community Centre. We were looking for a cafe, but due to the dearth of such establishments in the newly-residentialized area, we decided to try Mario's. While the selection of foods other than gelato & other frozen treats is small, the service was really good. Despite taking up most of the space in the place with all our strollers & gear, we were welcomed to hang out & feed our babies as needed. for those of us needing to heat up bottles or baby food, we were accommodated with cups of hot water & smiles.
I didn't actually order any gelato while I was there, but the light wafer cookie-type things (I think they're made of the same stuff as the cones) were delicious! -

The selection is impressive but the flavors are a hit and miss. The portions are very small.
