I went here for Dine Out Vancouver last weekend and had the lamb shoulder, it was a very generous portion and was very good, cooked perfectly! In fact, our whole meal was wonderful from the appy's, sides, and main to the Baklava dessert!
The location is a bit dated but fits for a Greek restaurant! The only thing keeping Maria's from getting 5 stars was that the service was very slow. It wasn't too busy the night we were there and it was still slow, but, the waiter was very nice and good, just didn't pay enough attention to know we needed plates cleared, drinks refilled, dessert ordered, etc.
I highly recommend Maria's for the food quality though! -

By far the most delicious lamb I have ever had in my life.
SO flavourfully spiced.
NICE amount of fat on the meat without having to spit excess (hah- you love the imagery)
TENDER.
I dream of Maria's lamb. seriously.
and as good as it was, I couldn't even finish it. I had an entire meal available for me the next day. Really, I tried to stuff myself- but the portions were just so gigantic I failed. and I NEVER fail at food! -

Maria's has always been a staple for delivery souvlaki: decent food, bearable prices (Greek food, like Mexican food, is mostly carbs; I never understood why it was so expensive!).
However, I had the recent opportunity to try the Kleftiko at the Denman location and it was some of the best lamb (huge amount, very tender, and very little fat for lamb shoulder) that I've had in this city!! Last night I ordered it at home and experienced the same quality. I'm a huge lamb fan and once I've found a quality source, I'm sticking to it! I hope it doesn't change in the near future! -

Nope this place just does not do it for me. Now don't get me wrong if I was stuck on an Island and this was the only Greek place around - sure I would give it a visit.....but here now in the West End all one has to do with is walk a block or two to Olympia for some good cookin.
We ordered the platter (sort of an all encompassing carnivores delight). The mezza (tastziki, salad etc) were all right and the souvalaki and kebabs were not something out of the ordinary. However, the prices are a tad bit on the high side and Maria's just does not give me a reason to splurge. The service was friendly. -

Outstanding! Their chicken souvlaki is so tender it falls apart with a fork. The staff is so friendly and inviting they make you feel like family. I would DEFINATELY come again.

I had the Spinach, Tomato and Feta Omelette for a late breakfast at 2 pm. It was very good. Came with nicely flavoured potatoes and a Greek salad. Yum. I only paid $7.99 for this. Generally it is $9.99 the menu. I also liked the coffee, which is an older type, light coffee with no bitterness or burnt flavour.

The portion sizes at Maria's are huge. I came here with a large group of friends over the weekend and our very friendly server suggested that we split the $45 platters (meant for two) between every three of us since we wanted to try a bunch of the appys too. This was a great suggestion since some of us got pretty full before our mains were even served. Our favourites were the taramosalata (fish roe dip) with warm pita, grilled and fried calamaris, fall-off-the-bone-tender lamb, and $6 caesars. We all agreed that the potatoes were too heavily seasoned with lemon and the dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with rice) were a little dry though.

The food was OK, but wasn't exceptional! For me it's was too expensive for what I had in my plate! I prefer have less in quantity and have more in quality !

i'm not sure why this place isn't as busy as stepho's in davie village... maybe they don't have a 5$ cdn mixed drink menu to drive in the customers... but i found the greek food here to be pretty good.

I had the 'Dine Out' $18.00 special The appetizer I chose was tzatziki, and I was pleased with it's taste and portion size. The dipping bread was fresh and there was plenty. The main course of chicken and rice was a regular sized portion and nothing special. The desert was Maria's house special, and it was very tasty, however it was so small it was ridiculous; I swear the portion was 1 inch square... just a dollop of a creamy desert mixture. I felt ripped off (even with the $18.00 special) The place was about 80% full and the two wait staff were very, very busy: way too busy to look after folks in any decent way. I waited and waited for desert to come with no recognition form the waiter. I finally asked about it and was told "they're really busy back there" (which I heard this waiter say to another couple as well) - it arrived a moment later with no apology. The waiter (who I overheard speaks 5 languages) was clearly experienced, but spread way to thin to effectively serve appropriately. Is it a case of wanting a good number of tables to derive as much tip income as possible? or just a lack of staffing that evening? I'm not sure, but I'm not going back.
