What I love about this sushi place is that doesn't have an overwhelming smell of fish when you get in. I don't understand how the new sushi restaurant up the road at the corner of Lonsdale is so packed when this restaurant, just a couple blocks away, offers great sushi with a few fish-free and vegan choices (including an interesting asparagus sushi that I did not even know existed until I visited this restaurant). Manyo, I will be back, you can count on this!
P.S They just came up with a new menu that is a bit too expensive and they took away the shiitake sushi. I saw they were cleaning the sewage in the whole street when I passed by 1st today. I dunno what happened there exactly. -

Just a thought, it may not smell like a sushi place, but was closed down by the city for reasons stated as "Unsanitary conditions" and "SEWAGE CONTAMINATION"! No kidding! That's right! It DOESN'T SMELL like a sushi place! I wonder why!
That's just an FYI, I mean, just saying....
Here's the report:

Now, give em a little credit... it only took two days to clear the sewage and unsanitary conditions and reopen. I'd say they're doing something right!
Thanks for listening! -

BAD!!! AVOID THIS PLACE....
I have a cast iron-stomach and have eaten at nearly every sushi restaurant in the GVRD Region.
After eating at Manyo, I've got a stomach ache and fear I will be violently ill.
I was the ONLY patron in the restaurant 1:30. I ordered the Sashimi box for lunch. It was tepid and warm.
Food is vastly overpriced as well.
TERRIBLE!
Stay away from this place.
With the excellent Sushi Bella just steps away...I really regretted coming here. After reading another reviewers report on "SEWAGE CONTAMINATION" I nearly fainted.
This place is truly nasty.
A note for the other reviewer "Karin" who was delighted this place didn't smell like fish - Sushi restaurants serve fish dear. Please get out more and please don't go to Manyo! -

Manyo has been around for decades, although they went through an owner change probably sometime in the 90's.
Haven't been there in ages, but I was definitely a frequenter in the 80's, early 90's. Ex-owner and staff were primarily Japanese, very authentic feel. Superb service. Came here again in the late 90's, and they changed it up to all you can eat, I believe. Still pretty top notch, though.
