I love spicy food and they have made the level of spiciness to perfection. Their food is about a $1 cheaper than most places which is a huge draw for customers to come in. The restaurant is famous for their Laksa Noodle Soup & their Hainanese Chicken with rice. Those dishes are a must try.
On this occasion, I tried their Chicken Laksa Noodle Soup. It taste pretty similar to other Malaysian Restaurants. The chicken was tender, was not dry and boneless. I may sound like a princess but who doesn't like boneless chicken in their dishes?? The kitchen staff does all the hard work so that their clients can sit back and enjoy the meal.
I will have to come back and try the Hainanese chicken. -

Chicken rice set was SENSATIONAL!!!
I've been a fan of hainanese chicken for a long time and their set is one of the best I've ever tried in Vancouver area. I recommend trying their pancake / nan, it brings out the whole Malaysian cuisine experience.
The best Malaysian cuisine in North America I've ever tried was in NYC called NANYA. The second best is in Seattle called Malay Satay Hut. Malay Curry House absolutely make the 3rd.
Their soup noodles are absolutely the best on Kingsway area. -

reasonable price and quality - we had Hainanese chicken (tender, juicy, boneless) with choice of 4 combo of sauces, curry chicken with indian pancake (curry was good but pancake was not), and Malaysian style soup noodle which was not bad just a bit oily.
for best naan, you have to try Saffron Indian Cuisine (this is another review on its own)
As usual, we asked for less salt and oil. Service was good, bit slow on the food arriving at the table. Did not try other dishes - but for these three, it got my "recommended"Listed in: Good Restaurants to Eat

Their "a little bit spicy" is pretty spicy!!
Also, very sad to see Bowl of Stars is no longer - they had a really good duck noodle soup.
I had the Assam Prawn noodle soup - You can get half yellow noodle, half vermicelli if you want. Go for the yellow noodle. They give you a good half a dozen prawns in this soup, so it's quite a good value for $7.50
The broth had a very lemony/lime fresh smell. Loaded with all the usual suspects, bean sprouts, tofu puffs, fish cake.
The beef brisket curry is good, but it's really spicy! Useless ordering the chicken oil rice with it as the curry completely overpowers it.
The Indian pancake looks like a naan from what I saw, we didn't try it. They don't know what roti is. -

My friend lives around this place and took me to dinner on a weekday night. This this a relatively small restaurant with approximately 30 seating. We were greet by a free Green Apple green tea ( a waitress says they do different drinks each day).
My friend and I ordered a Laksa, a Hainanese Chicken with Rice and a curry pancake.
Laksa: The broth was lovely. It is topped with fish ball, fish cake, prawn, tofu and vege. It also included yellow noodle as I expected. I enjoyed it quite a lot nonetheless.
Hainanese Chicken: I was surprised that they serve boneless chicken ... it tasted like authentic Singaporean Hainanese Chicken. The rice was the real thing, it was not just ordinary steamed rice but chicken oil rice with a mix of spices. The chicken was good.
Pancake: The pancake was standard, but the taste of the curry sauce really add a bling* to the pancake.
I do recommend people who like strong taste food to give it a try ... well, I brought my parents there two days after my first visit, and they like it! -

* Transitions *
I passed by Bowl of Stars (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) and with shock saw they had quickly changed over to something called, "Malay Curry House." Yikes! What happened?!?!! They were always busy, and provided a wonderful Xinjiang spicy lamb soup.
But I had to go in and grab a bite to see what happened. Seems like some of the same people are working there as the old place, but they changed concepts. They still have some of their old noodle soup combos, but have shifted focus to more Malaysian influenced flavours. Here are some shots of the new menu: http://www.yelp.ca/biz... and http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
We ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice, the laksa, and the "Indian pancake" with curry.
We were hoping the "Indian pancake" with curry would be a fresh made roti. But it was closer to a grilled store-bought pita. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz... It was too bad they weren't doing real roti, as the curry had excellent flavour, with a very fresh and rich spicing. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz... The curry needs a better starch platform though! 4 stars for the curry, 2 stars for the "pancake."
The chicken laksa had a good broth, which had nice complexity. It wasn't the most authentic tasting laksa, but it was good. They have started to definitely add more blachan than they had in their version as Bowl of Stars, which has improve the flavour. The noodles were also improved a bit from what they used to serve for their laksa. 3 stars. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The Hainanese chicken rice set (Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) included the chicken (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) which was nicely prepared with that distinctive gelatinous texture, served with a mildly flavoured chicken rice (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) which I would have liked to have a bit more chicken oil flavour in. The accompanying dipping sauces (they provide you a choice of 2 among their offerings) I chose were green onion ginger and garlic, and the lemongrass and lime. Both had nice flavouring that had the taste of fresh herbs. Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz... They served a small bowl of chicken soup, which did not have a particularly well developed flavour, and a small selection of pickled cucumbers, carrots, and a few pieces of pineapple. Overall it was a decent set, but something was just not 100% for me with the overall offering. It felt kind of like an interpretation of Hainanese chicken rice, if you know what I mean. 3 stars.
I hope they work through the transition and figure out how to get everything up to the same quality it used to be as Bowl of Stars, but I'm afraid this transition may not play out so well.Listed in: Vancouver Chinese Food, Vanoodle, Vancouver…
