So this is really near where I live. My husband is a connoisseur of dosa and all things South Indian. When he sees dosas, he goes after them with intense precision.
When you go in, you feel like you're in a dosa lounge. There's a big TV that plays Hindi videos. There's a buffet, a carryover from the lunch crowd. The place doesn't seem all that full- lots of tables, a few Christmas lights and red carpet as far as the eye can see.
While you wait you can read the wall of fame- a board with writings and messages from all of those who came to get their dosa on before you did. Oddly enough, not one single negative message. All positive. Thorough approval process for wall graffiti? I think yes.
The dosa is really good. Stick with Ghee Paper Dosa. The Paper Masala Dosa is not my favorite. With a mother in law from Kerala who makes the best masala dosa ever, I was underwhelmed by the flavours, but those who know dosa, know that the masala mixtures tend to be quite regional.
Love the tamarind and coconut chutneys. Steer clear of the fish cutlets. They were a bit too fishy for us.
The lunch buffet is the best value at $8, for all you can eat. I don't normally recommend buffets. I think of them as troughs where culinary appreciations die on a bed of sterno, but in this case, I've reconsidered my position. The chicken curry makes me miss our family in Kerala. The naan isn't impressive- but they make all you can eat fresh dosa, so don't eat off the buffet!
The payasam is also quite lovely at MDH (yes, we've been enought that we've shortened it).
If you're craving dosa, this place is solid. Weird, but solid.
