About 2 weeks ago, I had to go to a wedding and I was in desperate need of a piece of jewelry that would compensate for the fact that I had no date.
In my opinion, there is only one place to go, Made you Look. This local-designers' jewelry co-op and boutique has been around since the early gentrification of the Queen and Dufferin area and I believe has a big part in its popularity. All the glittering jewelry on hand is uniquely designed and well-priced. And purchasing there makes you feel like you've just bought yourself a piece of valuable art. That day, I bought a wonderful, genuine turquoise necklace by a designer named Jilian Maddin and thank God for her....A perfect necklace is much more enjoyable than having to baby-sit a date. -

I prefer costume jewellery to fine jewellery, so although this is not my go to destination for statement pieces, Made You Look does have beautiful contemporary fine jewellery. That being said, I still think Made You Look has some amazing items. This is the kind of place where 90% of the stuff is under glass, giving you the old "if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it" feel. So as broke as I am (damn you shoes) I simply walk in and admire from a far.
What is really cool though is the amazing custom work with old family heirlooms, broken jewellery and older pieces you own that may need updating. If you're like me and need a bit more oomph or looking for something more affordable, they have a more funky location right across the street: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) -

I had my wedding band custom made here by Zsolt Szekely and am supremely happy with it -- silver with a ring of cocobolo (a wood from Nicaragua) running through it.
All the staff I had an opportunity to interact with were very friendly and helpful. The prices are not cheap, but are very reasonable and appropriate given the high quality of work. -

Last year I set out to buy a ring for my girlfriend in anticipation of our fifth anniversary. I faced two obstacles: 1) a relatively modest budget, and 2) it was my first time buying jewelry and frankly I had no idea what I was doing. After some preliminary detective work via Google I figured Made You Look would be a good place to start. After a good 40 minutes of browsing I finally enlisted the help of the saleswoman, who helped me pick out a wavy/ridged silver band with small chocolate diamonds that cost around $350 with tax (one of the least expensive pieces there), and which went over exceedingly well with my partner. It was really cool to see people actually making unique pieces in the back room and to get to meet the designer; that personal interaction went a long way toward making me feel more confident about the whole process.
