The first place I've been to with extensive Gluten Free options. I was able to have almost everything! Delicious food, good price, very impressed.

Healthy and local, this restaurant is filled with potential. The vegetable soup I had was RICH and FULL with veggies and well worth the price. My "Tongue Tantalizing Tiny Tuna Tacos" were delightfully fresh and yummy, but the spicy sauce overpowered the mango and avocado, leaving little taste of anything but the spicy sauce. For the Gluten Free person this place has a huge menu and the service is quick and polite!

Since it opened, my mom had been constantly trying to get me to the Mad Chef Cafe. She's a huge fan and is always raving about the quality of food they serve.
Canada Day this year was cold and rainy, so instead of partaking in patriotic festivities we headed to the Mad Chef Cafe. Understandably it was a bit busy but we were able to get a table and friendly service right away. Nothing is more frustrating than when a restaurant offers a bare bones menu of nothing truly appealing. Thankfully, the food menu at Mad Chef was packed with creative and inventive dishes, so choosing what we wanted to eat proved difficult. We settled on splitting the "Tongue Tantalizing Tiny Tuna Tacos" made with lentil taco shells and Chicken Chicka Wow Wow pizza flavoured with tandoori chicken. The portions were hearty and more than enough for the two of us, but more importantly, they were phenomenal in flavour! No bite was a disappointment.
Why didn't Mad Chef get five stars? Their space is so small that it's impossible not to feel cramped even with the doors and windows wide open. The space problem was exacerbated by a mommy group with kids running around the restaurant. I'm all for kids and mom time but Mad Chef is probably not the wisest place to take your group when they have that much energy. Save it for date night. -

Why can't I give half-stars on Yelp? If the Mad Chef Cafe were in Vancouver it's a three, but for the Courtenay area I would give them four stars.
It was a rainy and cold Canada Day when we stopped in for lunch, and judging by the wait list we weren't alone. I decided on the duck burger which I thought would be a nice change from the regular restaurant burger. I would have to say that I was slightly disappointed as the burger was quite average and the duck could have been easily switched out for turkey or chicken and I never would have known.
My girlfriend ordered the crab and scallop burger with citrus sauce, which was quite delicious. Both burgers came on quality 7-grain buns with a variety of enticing sprouts and vegetables. We ordered both meals with the soup du jour which was tasty although not a highlight. All told, the meals were very tasty and enticing although the duck burger was a bit of a miss.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is exactly as purported by their website: comfortable, fun, and unpretentious. The decor is interesting and quirky. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable considering the ingredients are quality and fresh local.
Compared to most other restaurants in Courtenay, Mad Chef cafe has style and imagination. It's a nice addition to the area for tasty comfortable eating. -

Courtenay, BC
Mad Chef Cafe in downtown Courtenay has been open for awhile.
Went there for lunch on a rainy Tuesday, and enjoyed the home made chicken veggy soup (soup du jour) along with a grilled chicken burger on Italian herb bread.
Yummerz is all I can say!
Soup was huge, delicious, perfect for the day, and listening to other customers, more than our table agreed.
The chicken burger was also great, almost need a fork and knife to eat it though, as it tended to be messy ... with added lettuce, tomato, chili sauce.
Service was excellent (Rebecca was our waitress).
A small seating area, so get there before noon for lunch to be on the safe side.
Looking forward to my next visit without a doubt. -

Didn't enjoy the experience here at all. Very small with all the tables crammed together combined with weird acoustics (high ceilings maybe?) made it so loud in there we couldn't even carry on a conversation..got a headache instead. Some of the food was tasty..didn't like strange cheese mixture that was balled up on the burger and was separating. With tip the bill was 50.00 for 2 burgers, a beer and a coke...not worth the money...won't be back.

Excellent, the every changing menu and variety of different combinations are unique and taste excellent. presentation of the food is very well done in a variety of dishware. we were able to walk right in for a table which is unusual as there is a line up for the few tables available. If you cant save room for dessert we had to return later for the F Bomb dessert.
