I was heartened to read Kreag S's unfavourable critique of MacKinnon's--and not because I'm in the mood for schadenfreude. I, too, enjoy patronizing smaller, independent shops businesses, which in addition to the steady queues, was part of the allure. I used to work in the area and have been here several times since, each time hoping that it would prove me wrong. I wanted the food to good. I've had cookies (too crumbly and dry), pies (stale), cupcakes (dry) and doughnuts (mediocre) here. And as the parenthetical statements indicate, each time left me sorely disappointed.

I am usually a big fan of the local independent under dog...but not when it come to a bakery that charges like $3 for a mediocre cookie! I live very close to MacKinnon's and frequently walk by...I am always lured in by the smell of baked cookies and deep fried goodness...but always left disappointed and duped once I've made a purchase...
Take the time to walk a few extra blocks to the grocery store and make something for yourself...much cheaper and WAY more delicious...
I also have to wonder when I am in a baked goods establishment and all I can think is..."hmmm...I wonder when the floors were washed last"..this is never a good sign...Listed in: Just Skip It
