Update on 4/22/2012
I have now been to Arvi for more waxings, along with several facials and a body scrub. Every treatment has been amazing. He is truly a skilled professional when it comes to making someone look and feel good. I would not hesitate to book any of his services. Heading back next week for a massage (with someone else) and am certain it will be great as well. Overall the staff is still extremely friendly and appreciative of your business. Plus location is excellent.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from John B.
San Francisco, CA
This was my first time visiting M spa under it's new ownership. I had frequented the previous Nickel Spa for many years, I saw two different aestheticians there for several years. But, alas the previous owner was not a stand up guy and did not treat his staff well-there were problems. I stopped going due to those issues and the attitude of the owner-I'm grateful that it's in more capable hands now.
The space hasn't changed much. It's an urban scale but nicely and sparely done-The desk guys are cute and have nice attitudes.
I went for waxing. I saw Kealoha-Waxing is maintenance and isn't the most fun-but, this gentleman is fast and his pleasant demeanor takes your mind of any of the discomfort of the procedures you might be doing. I also recommend 2 advil an hour before your treatment and you will not feel the ouch so much. Anyway, my skin did very well and 4-6 hours later all the pinkness was gone and my skin was clear and smooth.
The only reason I did not give the spa a 5 star, as Kealoha deserves 5 stars for his service for sure, is that I found the locker room- where you are sent to change into a robe to be a bit sad. I design houses for a living and the space, while clean, feels cold. The lighting is not flattering and the space is tight. There was only one other guy in there when I was changing and I felt like we were right on top of one another-I wouldn't mind just changing in my treatment room. It seems more private and less clinical. I don't need to feel like I'm at a gym and my clothes don't need to be jammed into a tiny rickety locker. This is my only complaint in my experience.
The staff is attentive and friendly-treat yourself-they do a nice job! -

I just returned from a massage at MSpa and wanted to share a couple comments.
If I could rate the massage itself, I would give it 5 stars. This was one of the better massages I've had in a long time and Erick is a great therapist. He was thorough and quickly picked up on my tense spots and focused on those areas.
Now for the not so great. In the times of technology, it would be good for a business, especially in San Francisco to have an updated website with accurate business hours along with accurate hours on their yelp page. Additionally, when under construction, it would be nice to alert patrons when they are making appointments and include a message on your website. Typically, when a spa is under construction, they will offer patrons a small discount as a courtesy. Additionally, when paying for a 60 or 90 minute massage, I expect a full 60 or 90 minute massage. My massage last approximately 45 minutes, while it was good, I would expect to get my money's worth.
Finally, when you advertise a "brunch" on your website, it would be appropriate to actually have a brunch. If there are sunday's that you will not have this, again, let your patrons know. I was looking forward to a relaxing sunday with a mimosa or two following my massage.
I hate to be a complainer, so these are just mere suggestions/comments. Overall, you have a wonderful facility, convenient location and courteous staff. -

Amazing spa. Great massages.

After my previous visit and review I was contacted by the owner and invited to return for a complimentary facial, which I thought was very classy. I had been a client of Nickel, the previous salon on the premises under previous management, for several years.
I returned yesterday for another facial, this time with Margie, who has been there for years, and who I have received facials from before. Margie is friendly, intent, and enjoys her chosen profession. She makes an effort to get to know her client, and is willing to add that little bit of extra attention to get the job done right. She takes pride in her work.
I also chose to get a massage, as long as I was there, from Daniel. Daniel is pleasant, and kind and gives a thorough and vigorous massage.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Very friendly customer service reps and the atmosphere is nice enough, not over the top, which makes for an inviting environment.
I went in for waxing and was blown away by Arvi's attention to detail and speediness with the painful parts. He truly defines customer service and understands that it's the little things that make a HUGE difference. Arvi is courteous and professional with a great sense of humor. Waxing always hurts, but this is the best experience I have had so far. M Spa definitely has a new regular. -

We came here once before, when it was Nickel spa, from what the masseur told us, the previous owner did some shady financial dealings and filed for chapter 11, thus...M Spa was born
The environment is definitely not very "upscale 5 star resort tranquil with a waterfall" type thing. In fact, little (or almost nothing) has changed about the environment since it was Nickel. The lounge area had a television, a couch, a small fridge, some fresh fruit and small snacks. The ceiling still had open piping running through it. In all honesty, trying to do too much with too little space = cluttered. AND the last time we were here there was champagne, not this time =(
The locker room also remained the same. Clean, well stocked, steam room was nice and steamy, nothing to complain about here
The massage (we had two combination sport/swedish massage) was definintely different. The last time we were here, we had the swedish (it was the 'make you fall asleep' kind). This time, the combination was relaxing, hands-on, strong, and definitely not sleep conducing, but relaxing nonetheless. But in hindsight, I think I would opt for the swedish if I ever come back
Dont come here expecting an upscale resort style spa, you will surely be disappointed. This feels more like the neighborhood spa where regulars go (am I a regular? probably not). They can upgrade the lounge area though, and make it more noise proof from the outside street and reception area. -

What a life saver! At the last minute, they accommodated me with a great treatment before I began classes tonight. I requested a massage and facial treatments and also got a complimentary microdermabrasion therapy.
I was greeted by very nice gentleman, who showed me the lounge and locker room. I received a great massage from Eric and I had the opportunity to get a facial and microdermabrasion treatment from Margie. Very nice staff, relaxing atmosphere.
I recommend anyone to try M Spa, who wants to treat themselves to an afternoon of relaxation. I thought it was a bit pricey, but worth the visit. -

I was feeling pretty stressed so I decided to check out M Spa based on the prior yelp reviews. I had a 60 minute massage with Topango who was absolutely amazing and probably the best massage I ever had. He was totally professional but also took great care to make sure I was comfortable. I am going back for 90 minutes in 2 weeks.

I used to live in San Francisco and was a frequent guest when it was called Nickel Spa. I used to get facials from Margie who gave the best facials ever. Low and behold Margie is the owner of the new spa - M Spa!!
I couldn't be happier for her. She has given the spa a new make over - and it looks fantastic. I now live on the East coast - bummer! However, whenever I am in town, I have make sure I build in enough time to see Margie. She has done wonders for my skin. I can't say enough good things about here. I promise you it's the best gentleman's facial you will ever receive!
The massages are great as well. All in all this is a fantastic place. I just wish it was on the East coast. -

Have you ever felt like you were totally wasted (duh) and your body is basically jello? Your mind is swimming and you can see and hear what's going on but can't totally make sense of it?? Yah, that's how I felt about not only my first massage with Dana (a guy) but the second one as well.
I just got home from said, 2nd appointment at M Spa and HAD to write before the euphoria wore off. Hmmmm, jello - that's me. Seriously though, Dana was awesome. What ever technique he used to massage, stretch me and manipulate my arms and legs, I was in heave and before you know it...done.
(sigh) If only I could get this done daily!
Everyone there has been great to me. I hope you guys get a chance to check this place out! -
Review from Bill S.

Kind of a disappointment. There isn't really any change since it was Nickel, and that wasn't exceptional either. Sure, I'm glad to have a day spa in their neighborhood, but M Spa is overpriced for the quality of the amenities and the services. Try one of the local, self-employed massage therapists instead.

Many great services & practitioners, to choose from, combined for a relaxing experience. The interior has been redone, resulting in a bit warmer feel.
I've tried Jason (Massage), Tammy (Feet), & Margie Dindral (Owner/Esthetician). -

The experience at M Spa is unmatched. I've been going to different places in the city and settled on Nickel a long while ago (like 8 years ago)...I found Margie and ever since then I totally fell in love with all the services she provides. I fall asleep when she's giving me a facial (trust me it's so relaxing)...and I consider a visit to M Spa a mini-vacation in the heart of the city...highly recommend...

I just went to M Spa this morning for the first time and really, really liked it. Great deep tissue massage and the therapist was attentive to the problem spots I requested. The locker room is very clean and well kept, as are the showers and steam room. Well done, I will be back.

M Spa is great! The space is the same as the previous Nickel Spa but they've made it very comfortable and relaxing without looking feminine. Some of the previous therapists have come back but there are also new therapists. All of the therapists give excellent massages, but I have a few favorites and one or two that I avoid. Showers are clean and the steam room is very relaxing.
It's a great place for men... a place that men can retreat to! I would highly recommend this place! -

Stumbled upon this place while in town for a couple days and was happy I did! I was almost literally pulled in off the street (was she the owner?) and given a tour. I had the time, so I opted for a massage ... combo Swedish/deep tissue by Dan (or was it Don?). It was just exactly what I needed ... somewhere on that fine line between pleasure and pain ... working out kinks I've been carrying around too long. The place is smallish, but not tiny, not crowded. I don't live in the city, so I'm not familiar with massage pricing there, but I found M Spa's pricing to be lower than what I'm accustomed to at home.

Since Margie took over as the new owner this place the quality of the place has become first rate. The therapists are excellent. Margie also gives the best facials and microdermabrasions. They really care about service in this spa and it shows!

This Spa is so well put together that I was pretty much won over before receiving any services. It is very relaxing and comfortable. The owner has quite an eye for detail and design. I received a massage from Chad, and I was asleep in a matter of minutes. This is unique because I carry tension in my shoulders and lower back and it's difficult to relax. Chad was attentive and applied pressure in the right areas, and intuitively adjusted to meet my comfort. I am a new fan of massage!

Decided to patron M Spa again after seeing Ron about a month ago. Today I had Dana for a full hour (but wish it had been 90 minutes)! He was really amazing! Made me feel comfortable and really found all those tense areas that needed to be worked out. Super friendly guy - I'll definitely be seeing him again soon! I really love the new spa. It's the same location, but the energy is completely different and you can tell the people like being there.

Terrific experience. My neck and shoulder area was in such bad shape that it hurt to touch it. I had notice M Spa when walking through the Castor and thought, "What the heck." I was able to get an appointment for later that day and what a difference it made. The receptionist suggested that I come early and use the steam room to loosen up. Thick robes, slides, thirsty towels, and anything you might need was provided. All you have to do is show up.
The best part, though, was Austin's massage. He really worked on my problem areas and got them so that they were beginning to release. Although I had only booked a 60 min massage, it felt like it was 90 mins -- Austin is that good and efficient.
Clean lockeroom, accommodating staff, peaceful environment. Hope they'll be around for a long time. -

M spa is Fantastic! I've had facials and massages at some of the best spas all over the world and many here in the bay area, and M Spa is the best I've found!! The facials are fantastic, so thorough, and professional. I'm never disappointed with the results. The space is also fantastic, so relaxing, I usually try to do a facial and massage combo and just spend hours being pampered. Everything they do is top notch. I recommend M Spa to everyone!

I am extremely pleased to have found M Spa. I had been getting my back waxed at various places in the city but was never completely satsified. Not only are the results excellent but the atmosphere and the attitude are very welcoming and calming without the usual hard sell or upsell. The physical space was nice when it was Nickel but it has been upgraded to be even more comfortable and professional.

My partner and I have been to M Spa twice, and have been very pleased and excited by the great facility, friendly and helpful staff and the excellent services they provide! My partner has had manicures both times, as well as a facial on the first visit and a massage the second time. He said that the facial by Margie made him feel like putty afterwards because he was so relaxed. His massage by Topango was both invigoratiing and soothing - said he almost fell asleep. I can't wait to get a massage from Topango, as my partner raved about him! He was also very happy with the manicures that Tam did. He likes that they're relaxing as well. I had a back and shoulder wax on my first visit, and it was the best I've ever had! Kealoha makes you feel really comfortable, which proved to be even more important on my next spa day. I decided to have the bottoms up waxing and a full body manscaping on my latest visit. Again, Kealoha provided such an open atmosphere that I was totally comfortable while having a very personal service. He's a consummate professional, and if possible, my second experience was even better! The locker room, showers and steamroom are very clean and well kept - all to make you feel pampered. I also really appreciate the lounge area, which is quiet and soothing (where they offer refreshments while I waited for my partner to finish). Also, props to Dominic and John, the front desk staff - they are what customer service should be. Thanks M Spa - you've given us another great reason to visit SF more often!

After getting a great haircut from Eman at "Every 6 Weeks" I asked for a recommendation for getting hair removal from my other various body parts. They were quick to suggest M Spa. I'm a bit on the shy side. And I find most spas intimidating and expensive. And talking about hair removal in my intimate places with strangers is not very high on my list of fun things to do on a Saturday night. But as soon as I walked into the spa I felt welcomed and at ease. But what really made the experience incredible was my esthetician Margie. She really made me feel comfortable. And she really knows what she is doing. I would highly recommend giving M Spa a try!
