Yelp you did not let me down here. I consulted you on where I could get a simple sandwich and that you did, and then some!
Talk about service with a twinkle in your eye! Follow their directions on the ordering process and they won't yell at you, bread first! Grandma was so awesome ringing everything up at the old register, she even gave me an extra cookie since I ordered a whole sandwich (which for the record I could not finish to save my life!) -
Review from Nick S.
When Grandma gives you a fork for your half pastrami sandwich and cookie, you take it. Because Grandma always knows best.
I ordered a half hot pastrami on Dan's Killer Bread with a can of apple juice for $5.50. A half is a whole two halves of a sandwich, but with less filling. And yes, I still needed a fork. That's just how awesome this sandwich was.
The sandwich comes fully loaded with the usual (mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce) AND sprouts AND your choice of cheese.
And it gets more awesome - guess how they keep their pastrami hot. Just guess. IN A RICE COOKER. BOOM. AWESOME. -

I enjoy the simpleness of a good sandwich, no fancy tables, chatty waiters or crazy gimmicks.
Great Hot Sandwiches, packed to the max with wtvr you wish and enough choices to have a something delicious everyday. -

Their Hot Pastrami is the BOMB!! Just be ready to wait in line. May (the little old lady) owner and her daughter Judy are the only ones there making your sandwich. But, they are worth the wait!! Or you could try to get there right when they open. Don't forget your complimentary cookie.hehehehe

I always walk by here and the line is always long. I wanted to know what the fuss is about. I asked around. They said sandwiches. I love sandwiches. I came in one day and the line was not long. I saw Pastrami on the menu. Sold. Very lean. Big Sandwich. Delicious. I ate it all. Felt like a hippo but it was worth it :) The ladies were really nice. Will be back sooner or later...it was good. LOVE.

HOLY BALLS!
That is all.
Best roast beef and pastrami I've ever had. I'm pretty sure they put crack in their sandwiches, but I have yet to lose teeth, so I'm pretty sure it's something better than crack. -

Nothing trendy, gimmicky, or pretentious. Just a delicious giant sandwich at throwback prices.
The sandwiches are so good you will wonder if she has a crush on you.
I recommend the hot pastrami or egg salad -

I think its amazing that a sandwich shop could be so good with out having to toast any of their bread's this place has accomplished just that.
If you don't know how to order you better learn cuz there are rules to abide by.
Yes the pastrami is off the hook here. How can it not be when they are steamed in rice cookers!
One of my favs besides the pastrami is the triple egg and tuna. It is a must have! HUGE......
TIP: Its real messy but order the Hot Pastrami on a Onion Roll. THE BEST.
Only CON. The wait is pretty long if there is a line cuz there is only one person making the sandwiches.
Unfortunately the older lady who is the staple of this place and where the first rule of sandwich making came from "BREAD FIRST" doesnt make sandwiches anymore, but she still going strong collecting your money and hooking you up with a cookie and a much needed fork for all the extra meet and veggies falling off the sandwich. -
Review from Rob P.
There are certain places that are so good that they almost scar you for life...in a (mostly) good way. They do this because what they serve is literally so amazing that you can no longer have that dish/drink ANYWHERE else. The pastrami sandwich at M & L Market is one such place. I have been going to M & L for going on 20 years now and their staple Hot Pastrami Sandwich hasn't aged a day.
What has changed (in large part due to Yelp) is the amount of people who now go here. I remember growing up, there would always be a long line at lunch but when I went back up to SF to visit last week and got in line at 3:30 there were a good 20-25 people ahead of me and it took almost an hour to get my sandwich... in the 90s there would never be more than 5-6 people at that time. Still, the wait was more than worth it as the pastrami was moist and flavorful (without being salty like most places). It was literally spilling out of the french roll and after the first bite it reminded me just how special this sandwich is here. I have since tried many well known and famous places for their pastrami and none of them even come close.
FOR NEW CUSTOMERS: There is a special way of ordering your sandwiches here, if you do it any other way you will get yelled at (I'm serious).
Step 1: Choose your bread
Step 2: Choose your sandwich
Step 3: Choose your toppings
Step 4: Choose your kind of cheese
Step 5: Choose for there or to go
When I show up I order, "French Roll. Pastrami. Everything. Jack Cheese. To Go."
Enjoy!Listed in: Hole in the Walls (SF)

Oh my god- the HOT PASTRAMI!
Annnnnd, pretty much everything else. But the pastrami is seriously great.
It's a tiny place with a long line; this should give you ample time to queue up and determine your order well before your turn... if you're not ready by the time you reach the front of the line, you're definitely gonna get yelled at.
Anyway though, it's totally worth it. Small price to pay for probably the best sandwich you've had all week.
The family that runs M & L seems to really love their business and their customers... it's a nice, homey vibe in there. Portions are very generous, nothing is expensive, and little Mae at the register is adorable. If you don't accept one of her almond cookies, you probably have a heart of coal.
Limited lunch hours (open til 4pm, Tues through Friday) and cash only. Definitely recommend cruising on over on your way to Dolores. Feels nice to know you're supporting a long-standing local institution, eh? -

Its not the first time I had the sandwich, but its the first that I came here to order.
Cholo was feening for a good sandwich, and although I was referring to another deli on 16th and Valencia, we decided to get it here instead.
Okay, I will call you when Im there, I said, since Im a bit ditsy when it comes to taking long orders, no this with this kinda stuff.
So for him, its the ever famous Pastrami with just lettuce and mayo on White Bread (he wants it actually on french roll but he forgot to mention it). I just ordered the Egg Salad sandwich with lettuce and jack cheese. (which is actually one of the best egg salad sandwich Ive ever tasted since I really make a mean one myself).
The servings were ginormous, the place is clean, but the Nazi Sandwich lady (that's how my friend Gessa calls her) is mean. Its not like there's 20 people in line, but apparently there are instructions on how to order like you start choosing the bread first then just mention the ones that you want to go with it not the without.
Cholo, savored and downed that sandwich in no time, he really likes it.
We had a good lunch at his office while his dad and mom came in...*wink*wink. "Oh Malou, its good to see you", her mom says.
I recommend the sandwiches, but if there's a better way (nicer actually) that they can inform you how to order and not yell at you then that would be great.
You must try this.Listed in: WITH PAPI CHULO!

Adorably old fashioned and filled with SF themed knickknacks, they cook their pastrami in rice cookers (I've never seen that before). A cute Asian grandma rings you up on an ancient massive cash register and makes sure that you get your almond cookie with your sandwich. The shop is so unassuming that it doesn't have a sign out front.
They're very particular about the way you order your sandwich. You should state the type of bread that you want first. The rolls cost extra but might be worth it (otherwise, you might be getting Orowheat bread).
* Turkey & pastrami sandwich ($4.20 for a half, which means less meat than a full: http://s3yelp3-a.akama...): their thinly sliced house pastrami is warm and tender and the sandwich is meaty and filled with fresh veggies (really like the sprouts), including tomatoes, shredded lettuce, onions, and pickles. The roll is good - squishable and chewy. The sandwich isn't fancy but it's balanced, fresh and simple. And it's a steal.
They have the typical sandwiches - tuna salad, egg salad, turkey, bologna, ham, roast beef, etc., $4.50 and up for a half sandwich.
Cash only. -

This is what's going to happen for all in US.
No More retirement.
We have no choice working our ass off untill die.
Yes, that's so true.
That is whats going to happen.
What I saw here was that 100 years old Asian lady chasher.
She looked young though, still talking and gave me a correct change.
Awesome!
And a younger lady who was making a sandwich, she might be in late 70's, and there was an old Asian man who seemed .... late 70 also, but they look young and going strong.
Old Asians are young looking.
I run into my ex-co-worker the other day, he is a white in 30's, lost his hair, he looks like 60. And if you are white in 60, you should be look like 80.
I just wonder why white men look old.
The Pastrami Sandwich was Awesome!
The place is very simple, standerd, authentic American sandwich.
There is no BS Jiveass sandwich.
There is no 49er's sandwich.
There is no N.Y. sandwich
There is no R&R sandwich.
There is no Alaska sandwick.
There is no Saigon sandwich.
There is no Korean BBQ sandwich.
This is simple good sandwich with no BS.
I really like the place.
I'll recommend to anyone.
just wondering how long the place last?
Hoping for a while.
But it seems like they'll be gone anytime soon.
So, I'll be coming as much as I can before too late.
Hey, life is too short.
Byw, there is no street sign.
I walked by right front for 3 times.Listed in: Sandwich Nazi, Sandwich Nazi

Love the food. Love the wonderful and charming family that's been running this place for years. Love the old cash register that May operates and the almond cookie she places on your order. There's usually a line here so... Don't Tell Your Friends! :)

Dark rye
Turkey and Pastrami
Swiss Cheese
Everything, no mustard
Know the rules, know your order, be polite and you will get the sandwich love in return. Everything in my earlier review still stands up to this day, though Judy is making the sandwiches and May runs the register and hands out her almond cookies, of course you want one, don't be rude!
With everyone going nuts over getting shit like mozzarella sticks and jalapeno poppers in a sandwich, it is time for people to rediscover that sandwiches don't need to have ingredients off of the appetizer menu at a TGI Fridays. These sandwiches are made with pure love and you can taste it in EVERY amazing bite. "The Best" doesn't even begin to cover it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I guess I have to give this place another shot. I had the hot pastrami and I didn't think it was anything special. It was good and filling but it wasn't mind blowing. Hahah my husband wouldn't talk to me after I said that. But it's his fault, I was expecting too much.
The line is OUTRAGEOUS! =( -

Its a new year and it means its almost time for "Mae's" to return from their annual vacation time during the holiday season. Oh, the anticipation is killing me! When they do re-open, it'll be a tough decision. Hot Pastrami? Judy's lovely RED roast beef with horseradish? Quincy's roast pork? Egg and tuna salad? Or will Quincy conjure up the lamb again? No matter what, although the decision will be difficult, the result will be oh-so-good! I'll leave it to Judy to choose just the right bread for me. And even though I order a "half" sandwich, it will be massive. I never finish them in one sitting. Plus it'll be good to see Mae at the register with a treat and a smile.

$6.90 for an insanely ginormous amount of hot, tender, juicy pastrami with spicy mustard, swiss, bean sprouts, lettuce, and tomato between two slices of super soft dark rye bread?
Oh yeah, and an almond cookie to boot.
Annnd if I had another piece of bread, I probably could have made a second sando out of all the yummy pastrami that literally was bursting out with every bite I took.
I've died and gone to sandwich heaven.
I don't really get all the negativity towards the service. They were all super friendly when I got my mountain of deliciousness today. I guess I wasn't taking my sweet time to order and ask about all the different combos they could possibly make me, but I wasn't ridiculously efficient either.
If you need fancy pants, all-organic ingredients, and grass-fed meat, don't come here. If you just want to enjoy an amazingly tasty pastrami sandwich without anyone judging you, then run on down as fast as you can. I'll be back in a heartbeat.Listed in: sandwich me - sf

Best pastrami sando ever.
They steam the pastrami in giant rice-cookers to keep it juicy, and for somewhere shy of 7bucks, you get a monster sandwich that can barely be contained in the bread... hence they provide a fork!
The whole family is awesome... just get the order-process down and you'll be safe from a curt lecture on your ordering incompetence ;) Becoming accepted as a regular and getting hooked up with free extra almond cookies from the cute old woman at an even older cash-register is the icing on the cake! -

Got the Hot Pastrami Sandwich $6.90 after tax. This is the sandwich that they are known for. It is one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever had.
The line can get long and it takes a while because there is only one lady making the sandwiches and usually people are ordering more than one.
There is a certain way you must order your sandwich.
1. what type of bread
2. what type of sandwich
3. tell her what you WANT on your sandwich. DO NOT tell her what you DO NOT WANT.
4. tell her if you want cheese
She asked my friend "do you want cheese?"
he said, "yes"
she said, "no, not yes what kind"
It isn't that she's being mean, she's just being efficient in the way that she wants people to order, in order to make things go faster.
The older lady at the cash register is adorable, reminds me of my grandmother. Every order gets an almond cookie, enjoy it! -
Review from Megan R.
I love Pastrami, but who would have thought to put all the fixins on it. At M & L Market that is just the way they do it. First things first, you must order starting with the bread. There is even a picture of the one of the owners telling you that exact fact.
The pastrami is delicious and extremely lean. Lean and pastrami in the same sentence hard to believe I know. The meat is sliced in front of you and is topped with the works if you would like. You should definitely go for it that way. I know blasphemous, toppings on pastrami other than mustard. I was skeptical too, but it is amazing.
When you reach the end of the line the daughter who made your sandwich will hand everything off to her mother. Mom will ring your order on an old fashioned cash register. Each sandwich comes with an almond cookie.
I will admit that we were taking our food to go since there is approximately three tables in the shop. Mom saw there was an open table and insisted we stay. There is no messing with Mom or the sandwiches. -

Just like every damn 4-5 star review here, the best thing you can ever get is the pastrami sandwich! I went here with my little sister and my good friend earlier today and we got 5 orders of the pastrami sandwich (I was delivering lunch to a few others). It was so juicy that I licked every finger! Overall, the mom and pop store was so cute too! Cozy little place with great service!
The old lady at the cash register was so cute!!! She gave us extra cookies!
Old Lady: do you like cookies? I made them myself.
My little sister and I: OMG, WE LUB COOKIEZ!!!
Old Lady: Then I give you extra!
My little sister and I: YAY!
My friend: *Facepalm*
I just wanted to take the old lady home! -

The best pastrami sandwich i have even gotten my hands on or put in my mouth.
-4 stars for the food ( the highest already because you always have consider the service which complete your whole experience)
-1 star of the service.
Now, let us get down to the main topic of this evening. HOT PASTRAMI SANDWICH. So, there is this little place called M&L Market that serves the BEST Pastrami sandwich that you can get your hands on. (I promise you). M&L is a family-owned sandwich shop run by Quincy ( The cook), Judy ( The Sandwich Maker) and Mae( The cashier who is so lovely). Such Teamwork!!! Kids these kids need to spend more time with their Family!! Anyways, this shop is nothing special, looks very modest inside and out and it might be hard to find because it is a tiny place. However, once you step in, that is when the magic happens.
Now, there is always, i mean ALWAYS a line here because it is so popular even though it is only open during lunch hours. So, you wait in line like everyone else and while you wait, you can look at what you sandwich you want. Also, you can get your drink, they have a lot of selection on drinks! ( got to have a great drink along side of a great sandwich right?).
Here is the most important part: Ordering. To get the best pastrami sandwich in town, you got to follow some rules. Judy is very strict about how you order. first, you have to say what type of bread you want. Second, you then say what type of meat you want. Last but not least, the ingredients that goes along with it such as cheese, onions.etc. After that, Judy will work her magic and you go to the cashier( Mae) to pay. Mae is the sweetest ever, she is so nice and she gives you a almond cookie for after the sandwich. It is like you already had dessert before eating the main course, that is how sweet Mae is.
The sandwich just look like a sandwich you can make at home, but when you take the first bite, you will taste the difference and you will be shocked how something so simple can taste so good.
One more thing, don't forget to eat the cookie! you have to! it is for good luck! -

Big, tasty, and fresh sandwiches for a decent price. They're even better if you put some barbecue chips inside them before eating. I grew up going here for sandwiches and have yet to find another mom and pop place like it. Turkey on dutch crunch (or should I say dutch crunch turkey-- you have to order the bread first :) )is my favorite with pastrami a close second. An added bonus is the almond cookie May would throw in your bag when she'd ring you up ( 2 or 3 if she knew and liked you). I moved to the East Bay and miss this place on a regular basis!

Fate brought me to this family-owned sandwich shop/market. I had never seen it or heard of it before, but happened to walk by it one afternoon as my boyfriend and I were looking for a lunch place.
The interior is very modest. If it weren't for the line of hungry people waiting to order their sandwiches, I would be none the wiser. However, seeing the mixed crowd of families, blue- and white-collar workers waiting in line, I knew they knew something I didn't. So, my boyfriend and I hopped in line and ordered our sandwiches.
I ordered the pastrami since it seemed to be a favorite. It was delicious. A huge sandwich for a relatively tiny price (around $5). It was fun watching the people behind the counter work - they seem to enjoy their craft and serve with a smile.
The best part was at the end - getting a little almond cookie by the old Chinese mom (who runs the register). Feels just like home!
Just know that there aren't a lot of tables or chairs, so if you go during prime lunch hours, you may want to plan on taking your sandwich to go. Oh, and cash only. -

Great sandwiches, even better prices. Awesome ambiance. I work in the neighborhood and this gem is one of me and my coworkers' go-to cheap and filling lunch destinations. M & L Market is your typical mom and pop sandwich shop run by mother and daughter duo, Mae and Judy. They have limited lunch time hours (11:30 to 4:00) and are only open Tuesday through Friday, but when they are, there's a steady stream of customers.
There are very strict ordering instructions (bread first!) but with prices so low and such fresh ingredients, everyone is willing to wait their turn and follow directions in order to walk away with a sandwich made to order and bursting with flavor. I ordered half an avocado sandwich on California Style whole wheat with cheddar cheese...for $2.90.
I featured M & L Market on my blog, check it out for photos!

BIG NEWS FLASH. This is as close as I will ever get to a sammy as good as Marina Subs. Why did they get 5 stars then? Because you CAN'T beat the price! (a half sandwich is really a whole sandwich, a whole sandwich is a Gut-buster)
a half sandwich (hot pastrami) on rye, with a diet A&W - under $5 ---WHAT???! Crazy good, but the line can be a little long (I even got there at 11:45, next time I'm getting there by 11:30!

So take this situation:
Your a poor college student, working 2 part time jobs to pay rent, taking 18 units and wishing real life could begin. You lived off ramen and macaroni and cheese until.....
M and L's comes along. I love this place. It's the cutest hole in the wall ever. I actually work right near here and have been passing it forever and it wasn't until I came here with some friends that I actually discovered what it was.
The sandwiches are great, the business is family owned and operated so you know the service is fantastic and the grandma who gives you the almond cookies is just so adorable.
I don't think i've ever had a sandwich that cheap in my life. For half a sandwich (which is basically a whole) and a soda I pay around 4.50...yeah much better then Safeway across the street.
Def. worth a check out, just remember: always order the bread first! -

This family kills making sandwiches. Albeit the sandwiches don't have custom home made breads and other fancies, they knock out making tasty bites in many different fashions with great portions. Their "half sandwich" is easily a full sandwich I would make for myself and, get this, is less then between 3-4 bucks...insane. They are likable SF Giant homers and the mom & daughter combo (cashier & sandomaker) is hilarious & endearing at the same time.
Stay away on Mondays, they are closed :( -

I am not a huge fan of pastrami, but I heard good things about this place so I had to check it out. I practiced ordering correctly in my head over and over while in line and thankfully got it right.
This sandwich blew me away. The pastrami isn't as "spiced" tasting as I have had in the past (which is good). It is like a juicy, warm, delicious mix of roast beef and bacon. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
The size is great for the low cost and the service is great. Love this place. :) -

FINE. I tried it. Darling little old lady taking the money. But honestly, they need another body or 2 behind the counter. I waited 30 minutes to order a sandwich on stale bread. I suppose if I liked tuna or chicken salad then maybe cause it seemed like a house "signature" item. Or if I wanted hot pastrami or corn beef with a side water to rehydrate, but seriously. I hope they do well. Its one place that if I never went again, it would be ok.

Review from Luis C.
Today was their last day open this year (owners on long vacation - an annual tradition), they reopen next year probably in February.
Seinfeld's soup nazi was funny, but the real life person is not. Sushi nazis are devoted to their craft, but I also think that their bad attitude ruins a meal (never seen that in Japan). This place is the sandwich equivalent, and many decades older than the others (51 years in business). http://media1.px.yelpc... In other words they were strict before being strict was cool.
May & Judy (mother & daughter) W. are the sandwich ladies. May has mellowed down over the years, but strong-minded Judy remains strict. Just follow the system to avoid any mean stares and sharp tongue remarks. Assuming u only want one sandwich: 1 - type of bread, 2 - half or full size, 3 - what meat u want for sandwich, 4 - condiments, 5 - choice of cheese.
The standard condiments (aka. trimmings) are: mayo, mustard, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, sprouts, pickles and choice of cheese: cheddar, swiss or jack.
The place gets busy during lunch, but the line moves fast enough. http://media1.px.yelpc...
Nobody can deny that they make good sandwiches, http://media1.px.yelpc... use very fresh bread and tender meats. The best part are the bargain prices: half sandwiches ($2.50-$4.20) and full sandwiches ($4.50-$7.45). Note that "half or full" refers only to the amount of meat. Every sandwich has 2 complete slices of bread. The best seller is the homemade hot pastrami.
Portions are very generous, so "half" here = regular size sandwich elsewhere. Just look at my food pics, those are "half" sandos: paper thin sliced pastrami on rye, http://media1.px.yelpc... egg salad sandwich on onion roll, http://media1.px.yelpc... and a thin sliced homemade roasted pork on black and light rye bread. http://media1.px.yelpc... Can u believe that I paid $2.50-$3.95 each!!
May always adds complimentary almond cookies to every bag. http://media1.px.yelpc...

I was finally able to try out M & L Market before they closed for the year. They serve one of the best hot pastrami sandwiches I have ever tried.
It seems that hot pastrami is their specialty...so I had to try it. They steam the pastrami in a rice cooker to keep it hot.
The sandwiches are huge and you'll definitely be full before you leave. I recommend eating it there so that the pastrami is still hot.
Sandwiches come with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, choice of cheese, onion, green onion, and sprouts.
The line moves pretty slowly and apparently you have to order the sandwich in a specific way:
1. Indicate size (whole or half) and bread type
2. Indicate type of meat
3. Indicate what else you want on the sandwich
I'll definitely come back in 2011 when they open again.Listed in: Favorite Sandwich Shops

You won't find a much bigger fan of sandwiches than myself, so with the sure closing of Ike's Place in the coming days (soooo bummed!), I've been trying to ween myself off his creations so it's a softer blow once they're no longer available. Insert M & L Market.
There's absolutely nothing fancy about this sandwich shop at all. It's a bit of a hole in the wall right across the street from Safeway in the Castro and it's only open during the daytime hours... but if you can get there before closing time, you're in for a treat.
Their sandwiches are huge, and most importantly, cheap! You can get a sandwich that'd easily make two meals for less than $5. They even come complete with a complimentary Chinese almond cookie when they bag your goods to go!
Cash only, so make sure you have some scrill in hand when you dip in. -

a couple of caveats first: it's cash only, and they are closed on the weekends and Mondays and only open around lunchtime 'til mid-afternoon. it gets crowded, but there are a few tables inside. now that that's out of the way, when you go there, you only order one thing: the hot pastrami sandwich! it's about $7, and it's the best pastrami sandwich you will ever have. Kat's in NY? no. Carnegie Deli? not even close. unless a person goes there on a daily basis, that is the only thing you order there...and the people are really nice too.

The equivalent of the Soup Nazi experience in the West. It's worth it.
Order the heart clogging but absolutely priceless "I've died and gone to Heaven" hot pastrami sandwich or the Jack Special (roast beef, turkey, bologne and salami) with avocado.
BAR NONE!!! The best deli sandwiches off Church and Market Streets. East Coasters, I highly recommend this deli joint. It's probably close to your Carnegie Deli experience in flavor. -

Judy, her mom and brother are the sweetest people. My husband knows Judy and she is the most generous business owner and for that we are grateful. Their sandwiches are epic. Love that they cook their own roast beef and pastrami. This is truly my favorite sandwich shop!
