I have been here a few times. Service is great. Food is wonderful. Lots of beautiful people (patrons and employees). Decor is modern and chic.
Meat is always cooked to the correct doneness. My favorite is the lobster mac n cheese, however this last time going there I thought it had a bit too much herbs (slightly overpowering). Also tried a bone marrow appetizer, it was excellent. Will be going back for more. -

Lux was SeXy. You get that atmosphere when you walk in - lux fabrics, low light and beautiful people. I was dining alone so I was expecting to get the "forgotten table in the corner" but I was surprised to be tucked in at a cozy corner where I had good view of the bustling restaurant.
Service was attentive and polished - though I don't know if I classify myself as a "madame" yet - maybe I am. I had the tomato salad to start and found it alright. I make one at home and aside from the seXy presentation, it tasted much like mine. The tomatoes weren't ripe enough in my estimation. I wanted more to match the LUXury. My main came - salmon filet on truffle infused risotto. This was great! The light salmon flavour against the woodsy truffle was really nice.
As I left through the bar and doors at Commerce Place, I see why it is a young professional hang-out. It's "upwardly mobile" central. If that's you, get there - you'll enjoy it! -

Great food and great service, a seemingly rare commodity in Edmonton. The waitress was very friendly and the food was spectacular. I had the lobster mac and cheese and Caesar salad with chicken. Would recommend.

This is a great place with great food, great service, and great drinks. The only time I've been here I was in a private room with a big group of friends, but while in the main part of the restaurant, it seemed to have a good atmosphere with nice modern decor. All in all this place is pricey and you get what you pay for. Obviously because it's downtown, parking sucks, but as long as you are willing to pay to park, you wont have to walk to far from your car.

The place is nice. The service was excellent.
However the food was just ok. It got a New York steak. Asked for medium, it was definitely overcooked, but not too much.
It came with a ridiculously small side of vegetables and fried potatoes.
The vegetables were not enough cooked.
The LUX sauce was good, but nothing incredible either.
Apart from the service which, again, was great, this is just another steak house. -

OK so maybe I just had some super bad luck here but I just tried this place for the first time and although I give it points for effort, the best part of the experience was the fact that I didn't have to pay.
Decor: Really nice - definitely a romantic feel to it - dark, contemporary, comfortable. Tables in the dinning room are well spaced so there's no overwhelmingly busy feeling at all. Points for effort come in here.
Food: Now here's where I think my bad luck came into play a little but everything I consumed at this place was a disappointment. Drink - hurricane - I don't know what was up here but it tasted FUNNY...I don't know how else to describe it but hurricanes are pretty standard drinks so I'm not sure what happened there but it did not taste like fruit?? Appetizer - Seafood & Artichoke dip - the dip was super runny minus the gigantic chunks of artichoke that were a little much for a small tortilla chip (flavor was ok-ish but not super classy restaurant OK - I like Montana's dip better!). Entree - Salmon (as I am not huge steak fan - maybe this was my first mistake??) - Salmon was good minus being CAKED with way too much seasoning and the mushroom risotto was mushy - ummmmm, edible I guess.
That all being said, my friend had a steak and said it was delicious! He tried the mac & cheese with his entree so I tired a bite - way too rich for me. Nonetheless, he seemed to really enjoy his meal - which worked out as he was the one paying haha!! So maybe it was too classy for me?? Maybe I should have just had steak but in my opinion this place is way over priced in relation to the quality of the meal. I have a lot of steak loving friends and have been to steakhouses many times and ordered something other than steak and really enjoyed it. When it comes to Lux - if your not planning on having steak then don't plan on eating here and enjoying it. -
Review from Alex P.
My boyfriend and I have gone on several dates to LUX, and for a while it was a place I liked to go once in a while for a treat (read: it's pretty expensive for our student budget.)
In most cases, the service we got was good and the staff was friendly. I really enjoy the dip that comes with their french fries, which is quite honestly the only thing that puts them above any other steakhouse in my opinion. That isn't to say that their food isn't worth trying; their main courses have never been bad, and my boyfriend really enjoys their steaks.
So, why am I giving them such a poor rating? On our last visit, the chocolate cake I got for dessert was extremely dry. It tasted as though it had been made days ago. Neither the cake nor the icing were rich/flavorful in any way shape or form...Betty Crocker cake mixes tasted better. I mentioned that the cake was unsatisfactory to the waitress, and she explained that this cake dried out very fast, and also admitted that it was made the day before. The way she explained it, it was clear that the staff were already aware of the problem.
This leaves me wondering, why would the staff serve something that they know does not taste good? And why can't a restaurant seemingly wanting to appear 'upscale' make their desserts daily? There are many restaurants that are less pricey in the city that bake everything fresh. If I wanted something that had been sitting there for days, I could have just picked something up from a grocery store!
tl;dr
The lack of concern staff exhibited regarding quality of food served left a bad taste in my mouth.
Edit: Some folks have asked me if management and/or the waitress gave me any sort of deal or took the price of the cake off of the bill. Sadly, they did not. I e-mailed the manager later that week to describe the situation, and the response I got was along the lines of, "thank you for your input, come back and try a different dessert."Listed in: Dibs Out

Yum! I came to LUX for the first time last night after hearing many, many good things about it. I'd already visited its sister spots, Delux and Hundred, but I had been curious to try this high-end hot spot.
I was in a private room for a ticketed event, so it was a bit hard to judge what a "normal" meal and service might be like. But in our room, I found the service to be very good (considering there were about 40 of us and only 2 servers) and the food to be delicious! Corn with bacon bits? I never would have put those two together, but it was genius. The beef was tasty but not particularly memorable. I actually loved the peas. There was a minty flavour about them that was just right.
I was pleasantly surprised by the wine menu. Many were only by the bottle, but individual glasses were surprisingly in my price range. I really enjoyed my California merlot
I have a reservation booked for a couple of weeks from now and I'm definitely looking forward to coming back! -

Catching up on my outings over the summer, I am going to tell you about my evening at Lux, downtown. I went on Canada Day, July 1 for an early dinner (7pm).
Entering the restaurant, for as "grand" as it may seem, it kind of feels like you are walking into the lobby of a hotel. There are tables right there, boom, right when you walk in the door. Beyond this point, there is a set of stairs which leads to more seating? Couldn't tell, didn't ask.
Our server was quite nice and took our orders. I ordered the lobster croquettes. They were quite good and not oily. Along with this, I ordered the Snapper. It was "cajun rubbed" and better than I expected, I have to admit. It came with a lemon/basil risotto which was delicate--not too lemony and tart. Up to this point, I had enjoyed my meal and its preparation was quite good. With this mind, and stomach, I was looking forward to dessert....who wouldn't after having such a nice and relatively light feeling meal?
My MISTAKE was ordering the Carrot Cake (which is one of my favourite desserts and usually order if it is on a menu). BIG mistake....in fact, it was (unfortunately) what I ended up taking away from the entire meal experience. Not only was the portion size enough for 3-4 people, it was incredibly dry and there was an unnecessary amount of frosting which tasted more like cream cheese and confectioner sugar, versus the light and somewhat lemony frosting I have had on said cake in a few other spots where I have ordered it.
Too bad the scoring system doesn't have 2.5....to say that it's "A-Ok" means that it was "A-Ok" from beginning to end...NOT and as I said, to have that carrot cake be the ONLY thing I take away....sorry.... -

I had been told that when in Edmonton I should visit Lux for a quality Alberta steak. Being Calgarian I immediately laughed at the notion that Edmonton could have quality anything. I wasn't far off.
Lux has a beautiful decor, the lighting is such that you don't notice the tables nearby, and had I not known about Lux the smell of steak wafting from the kitchen would have drawn me in from the sidewalk.
The service was excellent, a friendly & knowledgeable waiter more than made up for the hostess who wanted to seat us next to the door in a nearly empty restaurant.
The steak was good, it was cooked exactly as ordered, however for the price I had expected something more flavourful. I had ordered a side of mash potato along with my steak and when it was delivered it was large enough that I could have recreated "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" with it. All in all, a quality steakhouse...for Edmonton. [I kid, I kid] -

This Lounge was very high-class, and reminded me of a lounge right out of Sex and The City. The ambiance was very sexy, romantic and intimate. great for a date night! I had an absolutely amazing Martini (Chocolate Covered Cherry) and then bottles of wine were half price on Saturday (you didn't have to tell me twice)! The appetizers and main courses were to die for! I tried some of the Bison Gyoza, Crab and Shrimp Cocktail and finished my meal with the Market Salad. Everything was done to perfection and presented very elegantly. It's a little pricey, but definitely worth it. The only complaint I had was that the service was extremely slow, however our server was new and we didn't have anywhere to be.

Another night in Edmonton, and it was a late night when we were done our trade show. Seems that many places in the #YEG close early, but not Lux. Called a couple places and they were shutting down. But we tweeted ahead and they let us know, over twitter, that they were open and waiting for us. They had a good wine list, with a mix of some very pricy things, as well as some nice, reasonable drinkable reds.
After some crab cake appetizers, I ended up with a raw-plate that included oysters, carpaccio, beef tartar, and some raw fish apps. YUM.
I'd be going back there. It's friendly and I like the dark environment. -

We decided to host our staff Christmas party at LUX this year and it turned out to be a great choice! Our server was very attentive and our staff always had a topped up glass of wine or beverage in front of them.
I spoke with Jill one of the managers and she let me know they have special items that are not listed on the menu that we could pre-order. Instead we decided to let the Chef decide what he would like to make for our group. This was a great choice! Andrew brought out delicious appetizer after appetizer, romancing each and everyone one. Everyone had a great time and the food was excellent. All in all it was a great experience and we all left happy and full. -

If steak is part of Alberta's culture, then this is the spot to be patriotic. The steaks are all brilliantly tender and done to order, but the sides and add-ons make this a customizable feast. Blue cheese gnocchi are highly recommended as a side dish, and the lobster poutine is quite unforgettable. Desserts, if you can find room after such a substantial meal, are nicely composed but daunting in size. If you are lucky, you'll get Ed as a server. The man is a human Swiss Army Knife.

Great place for great food. Though, when Century started opening more and more restaurants the quality has slipped with it.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Lux is short for luxury. Everything from the lights and red carpet outside the entrance, to the curtains and dark mahogany furniture inside painted the image of sheer luxury. The restaurant consists of two spaces, the dining area and the lounge.
The floors are covered in plush carpet, and there are big black curtains draped from the ceiling. The table candles are fake (light bulbs) as I discovered when our waitress accidentally knocked ours over (I freaked out because I thought the menus were going to burn). On the walls, they have large abstract paintings and framed hockey jerseys. Former Oilers captain Ryan Smyth owns 40% of the shares for the restaurant, so that explains the jerseys. The music is a combination of techno and house, but they play it very low so it doesn't kill the cozy atmosphere. Most people came a bit dressed up, but there were a few people in casual denim.
I usually just like to order drinks and dessert when I go to a fancy place like this, skipping the pricey entrees altogether. So I was disappointed when my lychee martini was pure vodka. For $9, I expected my drink to at least taste remotely like its name. We ordered the homemade tomato tortillas with spinach and artichoke dip, and this made me feel a bit better. The dip was warm, thick and creamy, with chunks of tomatoes, onions, and artichokes and strings of spinach.
For dessert we had the Lux parfait and pomegranate cheesecake. The parfait had caramelized bananas, coconut, and candied pecans. It also had some kind of spice in it (cinnamon?) that left a strange tingly sensation on my tongue. I'm not sure if I liked the spice in my dessert, it was different, that's for sure. My friend ended up finishing almost all her cheesecake. I had a taste of it, and it was pretty good; sweet and not too rich. Another friend had the creme brulee which came with banana ice cream .The ice cream was nice, but he said the creme brulee was a bit too sweet.
The Lux experience wasn't all I thought it would be, but I'm glad we went that night, because now my curiosity has been quelled. It's definitely a plush place to go on a weekend night, if you're willing to dish out some big bucks. But overall, it's just another (majorly) over-priced restaurant with too much focus on ambiance, and not enough on food. Then again, I only had the dessert and drinks, so I can only vouch for those.Listed in: Romance ain't dead!

Review from Lasha T.
The LUX decor certainly lives up to the 'luxurious standard' they are trying to convey. As other reviews mentioned there is a red carpet outside leading you to the entrance of the restaurant. The decor is on the darker side and quite contemporary.
When we arrived to the restaurant it was a Monday at 7pm and not very busy at all. The first interaction with the hostess was awkward. I wasn't sure if she was trying to stay away from the door because it was cold or if she was playing hide and seek with us. We decided to sit in the dining room, which was nice, but I was disappointed as soon as I took a look at the lounge. That was more of the mood I was in, plus the drink specials they have only apply there. Next time. The dining room has an intimate feel where the tables aren't crowded against each other. It was kind of like having a private dinner party. The server was good and not as awkward as the hostess had been.
I had been in contact with the sous chef at the restaurant so he was nice enough to come out and answer questions we had about the menu. We decided to order the hamachi and calamari as our starters and for some reason I was really in the mood for a mojito. I really liked the interpretation done on the hamachi. It was served on top of a rhubarb compote and I really enjoyed the way they sweetened the rhubarb without making it too sugary. It was a nice balance with the yellowtail. The calamari on the other hand left little to be desired. It was rather bland. the concept of orange ginger yogurt, but it just didn't pop enough. The mojitos were quite good and would have been on special if we had sat in the lounge.
For the main course I ordered the mushroom wellington which came with garlic mashed potatoes and small veg. I also had a glass of pinot grigio. My fiance had the beef tenderloin and then ordered mashed potatoes and the lobster mac and cheese as sides as everything is a la carte (except for my dish). Each dish was very well done, the mushrooms smelted delicious even at the end of my meal when I was completely full. The steak was a tad bit under cooked, but that's easier to fix then over cooked anyway. The lobster mac and cheese was good, but my favorite will remain at the Wildflower Grill. The dish at LUX was a little too rich. The bill came to around $160 which was to be expected, but I'm not sure if I would run back for dinner. I really liked the starter menu and drink selection so I would really like to come back, especially on a Thursday for their Martoonie night.Listed in: Favourite Upscale Joints

Great place to be on Thursdays...it's their Martoonie Thursday night, where martinis are on special for under $3 (they used to be $2 but regulations change). They place modern dance beats that make the place sound like a club, yet it's still a restaurant. As this is in city center, it attracts a lot of people right after quitting time, and it can get really busy from about 5-8. It can also be difficult to get service here too as it is busy, so I would advise getting multiple drinks at once...the server will probably take a while to get back to you again.
One thing about Lux is that if you do not come here dressed in any casual clothing, you really feel like you do not belong. There are always people around in suit and ties (as they probably just got out of work). There is also a premium feel in the restaurant as all the furniture, utensils, and even washroom stalls feel high end.
The food here is not too bad, but it can get quite expensive quite quickly. They offer some unique combinations like vegetarian studel and bison gyoza. The dim lighting creates a very intimate atmosphere while the music in the background is not too intruding. You could also go to any one of the Century Hospitality Group (Lux, Hundred, DeLux, Century Grill) restaurants and get similar drinks and food as well. -

The Lux is very luxurious. Very classy. One of the higher end restaurants in the city. It is located in City Center so it attracts and older crowd, people that have just gotten off work in busy downtown and need somewhere to relax.
The best thing about this place is martoonie thursdays. The place is packed like a club on thursday's and it's actually a pretty fun spot. They have good lounge music playing in the background and drinks flowing.
The place is classy so don't come here dressed down because you will feel out of place next to all the suits. -

I've been to Lux a few times, and the food is decent. The steaks are pretty solid, and I'd probably take Lux for steak over Ruths Chris in Edmonton. The sides are generally drowned in butter or cream and are all quite salty in my experience. The decor is a bit tacky, but you're eating in a mall so what do you expect? If you're looking for a steakhouse, this is probably the best you're going to get in Edmonton.

Review from Adam K.
Lux seems like it would be great in theory, but the fact is that it's nothing special....
I went on a date here and while the date went well, the restaurant did not live up to my expectations. Frankly, for the price I paid, I expected a lot more but I must remember that I do live in Edmonton, not New York City, Los Angeles, or even Denver.
We show up for a 7:30 reservation and the place is basically empty. This wouldn't be an issue if the hostess I had called a day earlier said they didn't have any available reservations....Open Table proved her wrong. After we were seated, the server handed us our menus and the wine list. My date and I both enjoyed a glass of wine as he took our orders. She had the salmon and I had an "organic steak." Like I have said a million times before, I don't really like steakhouses because I usually think I can grill a better steak, as I could have in this situation. This piece of dead cow looked and tasted like it had been purchased at the Safeway down the street. It wasn't gross by any means, but was nothing special (at all). We didn't have desert or a second drink and the bill came out to be around $100. I have spent $50 at a "steakhouse" and had a better meal. I will say though, the ambiance of the place and the service was decent so that's why I gave Lux 3 stars.
I am really trying to find a decent restaurant here in the Arctic Circle but so far, I haven't found one that knocks my socks off. So, if you want your average run of the mill steak house that's over priced and under performs, go here....it won't let you down! -

As I write this I'm groovin' to retro beats and sipping Australian Stickleback Red, a beautiful oak-berry blend of Cab & Shiraz at Lux, a restaurant and bar in Commerce Place. These guys have done an excellent job of promoting themselves on the radio. Even if you've never been to Lux, you've likely heard of Martoonie Thursdays, when martinis are under $3. This is a classy joint. If you like men in suits, feast your eyes. The crowd's a bit older, 35+, I'd guess. The Lux burger costs $25. The menu's wonderful: some amazing dishes, like vegetarian strudel - a puffed pastry wrapped with seasonal veggies, goat cheese risotto and arugula vinaigrette; truffled lobster mac 'n' cheese; Stella Artois- battered onion rings with peppercorn dressing. Everything's got a nice touch: the seasoned fries with chipotle dressing come in a Chinese food take-out box with silver lining. Cloth napkins, no paper. Good drink deals, too, for every day of the week: Liquid Therapy Mondays Martinis & Mojitos are $4. Double up Hump Day Wednesdays when doubles are $6s. Fridays all spirits are $1 off and Saturdays house wines are 1/2 off. I'm liking this place. It's dim and lively, but also subdued, in a loosen-your-collar chic kinda way. There's red and blue neon lighting, rich wooden tables, upholstered stools and tall elegant ceilings. It feels de-Lux and the food and wine taste divine.
