I just feel the need to point out, that the difference between LUSH and somewhere like Johnson&Johnson is a couple things...
Like Adam has proclaimed, the products ARE handmade, hence the cute little sticker with a person on it in most of their packaged products. Speaking of packaging, with minimal packaging, and compostable bags for their bathbombs, Lush has been a green company for a long time.
Another huge difference, is that LUSH is a 100% vegetarian company. Perhaps animal testing is not a concern to some people, but it is a huge concern for me.
Additionally, many of Lush's raw ingredients are fair trade.
Even comparing LUSH to other "boutique" soap shops such as The Body Shop, I would still choose them anyday if I am looking for a gift or luxury bath/face product. The Body Shop, for example, was actually bought out by L'Oreal in 2006, the biggest animal tester in the beauty business.
So, while I understand why some may not appreciate the combined smell of all the productsin a tiny LUSH store, or the cost of some items, I can say that if I were in the market for such products, and a local, independent source wasn't available to me, I'd choose LUSH first and foremost.
Oh. And I prefer body washes from other cruelty free companies, but some of my favourite products at Lush are the fresh facemasks (Catastrophic Cosmetic), Dark Angels cleanser, and the Ma Bar bubble bar. And if one is worried about the bath bombs drying out their skin, I'd recommend the bubble bars as they actually contain a cocoa butter base. -

I am almost getting nauseous just thinking about walking into a Lush store. Seriously, the smell of all the stuff inside gives me an instant headache and, if too much time is spent inside, will eventually give me a stomach ache too.
I realize that they make 'designer' soaps and other bath products, but I really don't see anything special about their supplies. I mean, the prices they charge for the amount you get is almost ridiculous. The only time I purchase products from Lush is when I'm buying a present and was told to go there. Even then, I'm in and out as fast as possible.
I don't understand the hype. It seems like I could make the same soap at home and save myself the pain (literally) of going to this place. I mean, it's just soap people. Johnson and Johnson makes the same stuff for a hundred times cheaper.
People seem to love it, but I would go as far as saying that I hate it. The overpowering smell aside, I would rather buy something that isn't ripping me off. -

I so totally LOVE this store!! I've been to various locations (Sundridge Mall, Market Mall, Banff, etc.) and have always been thrilled with the customer service...which is why I don't mind spending the extra money for the products. Some of my faves are: Veganese conditioner, sea salt face scrub and anything that smells like Karma! My husband buys me a huge basket every Christmas with all sorts of goodies in it. I also have found that some of the bath bombs are drying but a good moisturizer (from LUSH) after my bath does the trick.

Sorry all you Lush lovahs, but I'm with Lindsay K. on this place.
Like Lindsay K., the last thing I want when I walk into a store is a 'bath product buzz'. If I want to feel like ass, I'd much rather say "I had a night on the town", than "I walked into a Lush store".
Being a bath person, I can absolutely appreciate inventions such as bath bombs, bath fizz and bath bubbles, however, regardless of my state of mind, I will NEVER appreciate a bath bomb that costs $10 and completely dries out my skin.
Yes they have soaps that smell like cake; They have bath bombs in the shapes of cupcakes; They have soap that looks like pie and they have bars that look like chocolate. But seriously, WHO in their right mind wants to have dessert in the tub?!?!?
I'm more of a 'eat my pie first, THEN go soak in the tub' kinda girl.
Plus regardless of their claim to make designer soaps and high-quality products, their stuff always makes me flake rather than glow. Oh, and it also completely drains my wallet... I'm not seeing the plus side here.
A visit to Lush for me entails a headache, dry skin and a wallet that is far too light for my liking.
Two words: No Thanks. -

Many years ago I took a part time job at lush in the UK, for the discount as I loved the products. I feel I have some interesting insights to add to this review.
So the store at Market Mall is typical of most, lots of products in a small store and yes the smell of Lush is pretty overwhelming. I agree with some reviewers that some of the products can dry out your skin...that mostly applies to the bath bombs that use a large amount of citric acid to make the bombs fizz. If you are going to buy one, buy one that emphasizes moisture. A good one is called butterball with chunks of shea butter in it.
The other option is to go for a bath melt....pure oil and fragrance.
Whenever I have been in this location I have always been greeted by happy young staff who are eager to demonstrate the products, and in the spirit of the company culture are not the hard sell type. Although not on commission one thing that all Lush stores have world wide is a counter on the door frame ( a beam of light) that registers how many people come in during the day. At the end of the day the staff need to calculate the amount of people that come in versus the sales, *( the conversion rate). So it is important that every customer is converted into a sale. sheesh.
There are many good products to be had though....my favourites Jungle solid conditioner, Veganese conditioner, figs and leaves soap and angels on bare skin face scrub. Unlike in the UK the face masks here are prepacked, overseas they were weighed out as much or as little as you like.
The products truly are made by hand, and was a green company long before it was trendy.
Lush can be hit and miss product wise, but you will likely find something there that you like.
