Went to Van recently and decided to try this spot and boy am I glad I did. This place has higher end Italian food compared to your standard stuff you see in your average Italian restaurant. If you just want spaghetti and marinara or chicken parmigiana this place is not for you.
We started out with an octopus carpaccio which was outstanding. For the main course we had the special, which was duck confit ravioli in a tomato cream sauce with black truffle oil which was absolutely outstanding. We also had the chicken cacciatore, which was outstanding also. For dessert we had the mascarpone gelato with apple tart, once again, amazing,
The staff was very friendly and place had a very nice feel to it. It felt like we were someones house, yet very well decorated and elegant. If you go to Van and want Italian this place will not disappoint. -
Review from Katie F.
I walk by the area all the time and never really noticed this restaurant tucked away in a converted house in Yaletown!
Decent Italian place but service varies... it was amazing the difference between the average service we had with some presumptuous comments like "I assume you're enjoying the pizza" as opposed to asking how it was, versus the table next to us who were friends of the chef. They got their food much more quickly with no gaps, multiple check-ins by the chef and staff, and complimentary aperitifs and petit fours.
Aside from the huge variation in service on the same night, the food itself was quite good. Bread service is an additional charge here, but olives are included to start. We enjoyed the food here a lot and I had the prosciutto pizza to start and the sablefish main. Great taste and presentation. Prices were fair for the quality.
I'd be willing to come back again but would appreciate if the service differences aren't quite that obvious! -

We had an amazing meal and experience at Lupo. We used to frequent Villa Del Lupo and are glad to see a restaurant back in this location.

My Husband and I made a reservation at this place for 8:00. We showed up prompt and was not seated until 8:35. The wait staff was unapologetic and ignored the two of us most of the time we stood in the front foyer. Later that evening when we were asked how our meals tasted, we told them the food was well (Not seeming overly enthusiastic) and we were dismissed without any further recognition. I was slightly embarrassed. The food was truly just "ok" and the service made me feel unwelcome. The place it self if a beautiful restaurant with lovely eating corridors and well arranged tables. Great location as it is just off the busy Mainland Street of Yaletown, however; those are it's only special qualities.

Nice place, great service. My fish was a little over cooked, but the rest of the mains at the table were good. Pricey, and might pick other places at this price point.

Finally i get to write a review for Lupo!! What a special little place it is, went last night for valentines dinner and got the table I requested right by the window like I asked. This heritage home is huge and wonderful. I went to the bathroom even tho I didnt need to just to check out the whole place! had the octopus to start which was okay but the rest of the meal was above and beyond. We shared the fettuchini with truffle(amazing) and I had the chicken and asparagus as a main. My lady had the quail as she had never tried it. Both were super filling, lovely presentation and overall amazing service. Staff were great and paired a nice wine for us which we gobbled down quick. Left full and happy. Super romantic spot for a super date win :-) lupo, I will be back when I have savings again.

Lupo is a super adorable Italian restaurant in an house downtown. My fiance took me here for my super secret birthday dinner. The atmosphere is fantastic, it feels really intimate and comfortable. We got a seat by the window in the front of the restaurant, which I highly recommend.
We ordered a bottle of white wine, and we got complimentary olives. Since it was my birthday, we decided to splurge for food. For appetizers, we ordered the meatballs and the focaccia. The focaccia is hands down the best I've ever had. It comes in the form of a mini pizza with thinly sliced zucchini and tomato on it. I could have eaten 5 of these. The flavor of the meatballs was absolutely fantastic.
For the main course, I had the bolognese fettuccine, which was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately I was so stuffed from the appetizers, and wanted dessert, so I could only finish half of it. I would come back here just for this (and the focaccia of course). For dessert, we had the chocolate raspberry cake, which was small, rich, and delish.
One neat thing that Lupo did was they changed their music playlist to my favorite artists during our meal, as per my fiance's request. Sorry if you were there on November 14th and disliked all the Elton John and John Mayer!
Overall, this place was absolutely fantastic! I would definitely come back here again for an intimate dinner. -

It was a couple's night off away from the baby and we decided to make the most of it by coming to one of downtown's best kept secrets.
I walk by Lupo several times without noticing it before. After learning about this place from here, I wish I had gone to eat here.
The heritage home turned restaurant is a very fine setup to this modern italian restaurant theme. We got the window view and it is quite romantic and cozy.
A welcome start is the premeal olives. The menu and wine list has a good assortment and were very well priced. Come here between 5-6:30 and they will have a pre-event menu where you can get a 2 course meal for only $29 or a 3 course meal for $38.
I tried the italian meatballs as an appy and for the main course I had the cannelloni with spinach, caramelized onion and mascarpone. Both items, I have to say has a subtle pasta sauce flavor and is not too overpowering on the palate. Sometimes I notice restaurants tend to over dress their meals with too much sauce. Not this place though. I got just enough to enjoy what's underneath all the dressing.
One classy dish is the black spaghetti. It comes with prawns, sopressata and clams. My wife really enjoyed this dish and they don't serve this very often in other establishments.
Come try it out for that romantic or pre-event classy affair.Listed in: Classy affair

I first came to Lupo many years back when it was Villa del Lupo and absolutely loved it at the time. It had fallen off my radar (even though it's just a block from where I live) and I was excited to go there again. Unfortunately I chose to bring a large group of my closest out-of-town friends and we had a very underwhelming experience.
Our reservation was for 8:30 and we didn't get seated until about 8:50 or so, kind of understandable since we were a party of 9 but still kind of annoying. But our waiter was, unwittingly, incredibly obnoxious. For the most part our food was quite good but one of our party had some issue with her main and the waiter's response was "have you ever HAD [x]?" I mean man, if that's not the most condescending attitude you can have, I don't know what is. There were also multiple issues with our wine selections (I know nothing about wine so those responsibilities lied with my friends, so I can't go into specifics about that).
In general, for such a nice, high-end, well-reviewed restaurant, I was pretty surprised by how abysmal the service was. I am reading these reviews and everyone just loves the place so maybe I should give it another shot, but I'm definitely not going to chance trying to impress friends here again. -

Lupo styles itself as a "relaxed" Italian restaurant, but don't take that to mean that this place is either sloppy or unrefined. In fact, Lupo is quite the opposite. The room is sensibly appointed and has lots of light. The service is excellent: friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food is not only delicious and well-executed, but also manages to be imaginative without being too pretentious, obscure or abstract.
Unlike other restaurants downtown, Lupo doesn't try to be something that it isn't. In other words, it's not one of those establishments that tries to masquerade as a nightclub. Translation: it's a douchebag-free zone.
In its previous life, Lupo was known as "Villa del Lupo", which was a high-end fine dining establishment. Perhaps recognizing that times have changed, Lupo has relatively recently re-branded itself as a "modern" Italian restaurant. The end result gets a solid "A".
Lupo is definitely more high-brow than low (think more Il Giardino and less Romano's Macaroni Grill), but you'll definitely get a lot of bang for your buck. It's a great place to enjoy a fantastic meal without having to sell a kidney to foot the bill. -

I am really surprised that this restaurant had such high reviews. I found that the food was not that great and way over prised. I will not be going back to this place there are much better restaurants in

A cute little house serving up delicious wine, steak and cannelloni. The steak was surprisingly tender and doused in butter which of course made it that much tastier. The cannelloni was pretty good, too.
The pre-meal olives were a nice touch; the pizza looked okay but I would choose one of the delicious tasting mains/pastas first.
Seems to be an awesome date place, esp. if you get a spot in the window.
The service was professional; the bathrooms were cute and found at the top of the stairs.
As I mention in my quick tip, the "house" can be found in the heart of dt, and is a great stop on your way to a concert. Its ambiance is reminiscent of a SF eatery or perhaps a more traditional Italian trattoria (although fancy enough for a special date).
Next time, we'll skip the concert and stick around for another beverage and dessert. -
Review from Kassim D.
I went here about a month back and while I had high hopes based on previous reviews...I wasn't super impressed, it was pretty good overall.
Environment: in a retrofitted house in yaletown...it's a slick setup
Food: while the menu is not that extensive, the food was really good.
one suggestion: get the bufala mozzarella to start.
Service: while slow at first, it was great overall, and the waiter even
suggested some local spots on where to buy some of the ingredients off the menu. Good recovery.
Music: not italian...for some reason, I think it might have been dance music of some sort (playing softly, of course)
Overall: worth a visit, but not something I'll add to my go-to list of spots. -

Went to Lupo for a romantic dinner and because I read a review about loud groups, I reserved asking for a table in front by the window, which I got. The place was quiet and cozy. Perfect.
The service is classic for that type of place, great but not over the top. The servers know their jobs and can suggest the right thing. The thing is, I think no matter what you order there, it's a great choice.
We started with one Antipasti of soft cheese and chorizo, which was shared so came on two plates and was just awesome, no really, AWESOME. British Columbia doesn't really have any good cheese, they're either very expensive or not fresh, so tasting a REAL cheese for the first time in months, reminded me how much fresh cheese is great.
For Primi, we had Black Spagetti and the Fettuccini Bolognese which were both delicious. You could really taste the sea food of the spaggheti and the meat of the bolognese. I haven't had that tasty Bolognese since I ate in those Italian restaurants in Montreal, Quebec. Which is I must point out, the Italian capital of Canada.
For secondi we had the chicken. Wow.
Usually the portion are small and you need a full 3 course to be full but after the primi, we were just about to explode. We found some room for that chicken but could not get to any desert.
All in all Lupo is a great place to go for a great meal. Everything around it is all great too. -
Review from Allen W.
I love Lupo. It is truly a hidden gem, partially due to its off the beat location. In all honesty, I don't want to tell you about it because I want Lupo all for myself.
Location is set within an old home, which surprisingly works very well. It offers an intimate setting but is not cramped at all, plenty of room for servers to pass between tables without feeling like someone will bump into you.
Staff are excellent. Service is prompt, dishes thoroughly explained, and the host (owner?) even stopped by to chat and sew how we were enjoying everything.
Food was excellent -- we started with the veal tongue and octopus carpaccio, both fresh and flavourful. I had the salmon duo as my main -- a piece of perfectly prepared sockeye salmon and a luscious piece of white spring salmon (chinook). Never had white salmon before, but it was so tender and buttery. *loved* it
For dessert, we shared the almond cake and I had an Americano -- a dense almond cake with an almond filling served with poached pear. Incredible. Americano was strong, just the way I like it.
Portion sizes were generous, much larger than I thought they would be. It's pricy but well worth it. -

Amazing! I had the "Piemontese Ravioli", it was the special for the night, hands down the BEST food i've ever had! Timing on the food was spot on, perfect spacing. Our water glasses were always full as were our wine glasses. To be honest, i actually have nothing negative to say about it. A must try for anyone wanting an excellent dinner with great service and price.

I first came here several years ago but only drank wine. This time, we went with eating and drinking in mind. This place puts you in Italy from the moment you walk in. I also felt a bit like I just got home to grandma's house, very warm greetings when walking in and our coats were taken @ the door. The service was impeccable and the food even better! Don't expect to come out of here on "the cheap" though....you pay for the experience and it's worth every penny! I'd take a date here any day, it would be extremely impressive!

Mount Pleasant, Vancouver, BC
Food was good, the service could have been a little more upbeat, and the ambiance wasn't there at all. For a new years meal I'd suggest a fancier restaurant that isn't as pricey. And I know there are alot of them. With that said, the food was good, yet the portion sizes leave alot to be desired. The tables are too close together and the whole setup of the dining room is strange with it being an old house. Three stars are basically for the food alone.

Excellent place for a nice meal with out the pomp and circumstance that 'Villa Del Lupo' was. We had a fantastic meal with excellent wine pairings, fair prices and super service. Michael Mameli come to our table a few times during the meal and was clearly and genuinely concerned that our experience there along with the food and wine was excellent.
The Veal Tongue and vinaigrette was a delicious starter that was surprisingly delicate (Michael suggested a great wine pairing for this course). I also had the grilled quail stuffed with sausage and mushrooms, cooked to absolute perfection. We also added a side of Mascarpone polenta; that was a serious bowl of comfort food, so good!
For two of us having starter and mains with desert and wine (by the glass) the total came to around two hundred dollars plus tip and it was well worth every penny. A great place to go when you fancy a special meal:-) -
Review from Eddie Y.
I left my heart at Lupo. How could I not? I ate Rudolf. Just kidding! It was elk. I do not know how often people eat elk here in Canada but it was unforgettable.
Lupo is setting like a somebody's home. It was busy Friday evening but we ate in a relaxed, cozy feeling. We shared salumi($19). Nicely arranged cured meats selections and three condiments were nice to start. Focaccia($5) was one of the best. We could eat ten (maybe nine). Robert had veal scallopini($28). Tender veal was delicious with masala wine sauce and separate vegetable plate was a nice touch. And the highlight of the night was the elk ossobuco($32). It had richer taste than veal ossobuco. I liked how the chef turned this lean muscle into melting in your mouth dish. To finish, we chose poached pear and almond cake($10). Sugar glazed and almond cake was heavenly match. Their team worked like family. Especially, Karla who waited on us like a dancer. Later we found out she is a real trained dancer.
Thank you Lupo. I heart you as long as I heart Vancouver.

With only 9.16 of my 230 reviews (to date) rating 5 star, please listen to me with I ask you visit Lupo and silently toast to me over an amazing evening out with friends, loved ones or that special first date. You will not be disappointed. If you are, I'm sure it's your problem and not Lupo's. Seriously, it's that's good.
Cute and inviting. I'm at Momma's house with hard woods make it loud but that's Italian.
Quick service and eager to assist in any selection. As I was sipping my Peocecco to cleanse the pallet and perusing the wine list, a manager walked by and let me know there were a few wines "off list" if I wanted something different. No need. The list was impressive. I chose a medium body red for my meal.
Wile the specials sounded good, I eyed the 1/2 orders of pasta as a starter. NOTE: All Italian restaurants should serve a smaller portion of their pastas for an appetizer. If they don't, please ask for it. If you're lucky, they will dish it up and your taste buds will thank you. ALL Italian restaurants should offer small portions of pasta as primi.
After inquiring about the gnocchi, of which I was assured it was home made, it was settled. A perfect partner for my Osso Bucco. But how did they fair?
Home run for team gnocchi. Not traditional potato so you may be thrown but I aplore you to try it. Soft pillows that don't fill you up. At least not like the potato kind does. Outstanding choice of I do say so myself.
The staff appears to be a well choreographed dance troupe. Everyone participated. The hostess and others floated easily with table settings, wine, dirty dishes. I had the feeling of family. It looked effortless. And that's a good thing.
The patrons are an awesome mix. As is Vancouver. From new and old dates to friends and coworkers. If you need food, youll fit in here. Attire is smart casual but some were clearly after work suits. All are welcome here.
One glass of the Grenache was very good and I asked my server to suggest the next. He's been spot on so far. Rosa de rosi arrives with a nice deep spice and its a perfect match to the Lamb Shank (Osso Bucco). The meat falls off the bone and although I'm not a fan of throwing veggies at a dish in a whim, the peas, carrots and zucinni would do well to add color, texture and flavour. The only suggestion is to ditch the risi bisi (rice and peas) and go with a risotto.
The easy reservations through OpenTable made this evening spectacular. While it's hard to repeat when I travel, this is an exception. Thank you for the meal, the service and for making me feel at home. I will see you soon. -

I'm sitting here trying to find the best way to describe my experience here without sounding like an obsessed and demented food and wine snob. Perhaps it's best if I keep it simple and just tell you about each dish I tried. Overall, all I can say is I highly recommend Lupo for both food and wine. It IS very good :)
1) ANTIPASTI = Bufala Mozzarella (Daily Special Edition)
Description: Generous gob of fresh Bufala Mozzarella on a fresh slice of perfectly ripened tomato, drizzled with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar, topped with fresh greens and peas to decorate.
Verdict: If I could have licked the plate without making myself look like a gluttonous pig, I would have. Oh, and the peas were so fresh they tasted like Spring.
2) PRIMI = Lobster Risotto with Fresh Artichokes + Tarragon
Description: Generous portions of risotto and lobster. Perfectly balanced, to allow combined shoveling of both risotto and lobster into mouth.
Verdict: EPIC WIN!
3) PRIMI = Ricotta Gnocchi with Veal Cheeks + Porcini + "sugo" di Pomodoro
Description: Generous portions of delightfully fluffy gnocchi pillows with melt-in-your-mouth veal cheeks cooked to perfection.
Verdict: Your loss if you don't try this!
4) SECONDI = Grilled Quail with Mushroom + Sausage + Cheese Ravioli
Description: In a complete eating euphoria by this point...
Verdict: Just GO already! I'm already looking forward to my next visit...running there now.Listed in: I HEART Food!

Very nice place. Even after they stuck us in the wine cellar (which actually was quite nice, if not a bit claustrophobic). Very good service, if not a bit too good. There is good service and then there is a bit of overkill and Lupo walks that line. Had the lobster risotto and it was good, if not a little bland (i know, that sounds difficult). Wine list was very nice and the cannelonni our guests had was awesome.
A fine Italian restaurant and my sis, of course, ordered pizza and beer (prosciutto pizza and Italian beer), and it was the winner at the table. -

Ahem! Date night, long work week, and missing some time with your partner, this is a place to go in Vancouver for dinner. Be prepared to dish out a few bills, this place is not cheap, but as a treat you will not be dissapointed. Before ordering, consider what they have on specials, make sure to ask how much it costs (its okay to ask). You cant go wrong with whatever you end up ordering, so enjoy the evening. Go for an appy, main course, and finish off with desert. Their chocolate tart was just ridiculous, I wanted two, but I restrained myself. The ambiance is beautiful, this is one amazing villa, and the staff are friendly, and make you feel important (which is sorta nice).

Yeppers, this was as good as it gets! Went pre-theatre before Wicked tonight and LOVED it! Hours later, I am wishing I had more! When we walked past it again after the show we looked longingly at it and wondered out loud if they were still open...
The stand outs were everything tonight except the Tiramisu. I like it more traditional, this didn't have the flavours I was expecting or looking for, but don't get me wrong - I finished it!!!
I also loved the crostini trio - the ham & eggplant one the best though they were all delicious, including the mushroom one. I also loved the meatballs with polenta & Gorgonzola cheese. Pictures posted.
My friend had the special of Dungeness crab ravioli with butternut squash, baby shrimp & lobster bisque sauce. Picture posted.
The papparedelle with rabbit I had was amazing!!!! So good, I can barely put it into words except to say that the whole dish was absolute perfection!
My friend had the chocolate raspberry tart and I the tiramisu, pix posted.
I will return...and soon!!!! Our waiter was fantastic and the dinner was such a pleasure!!! -
Review from Steve S.
If you walked by this place a million times, you'd probably never think it was a delicious, if somewhat pretencious, restaurant.
My choice for this early dinner, including a choice of seat (the place was empty) was a nice BC riesling and lobster risoto. The prices are a bit steep, but it makes it just a bit easier to swallow when you realize how good the food actually is. Because my stomach was eating itself before dinner, I chose the guttony route and got a caesar salad too. Probably one of the best caesar's I've ever had.
The only reason Lupo doesn't get a 5 star is due to the sheer pretenciousness of the wait staff. Tone down the too detailed descriptions of the food (I don't care) and a five star will be in order. If this is your thing, then you'll LOVE this little place. -

The venue is great, particularly for a romantic meal. We got a great table near the window.

I used yelp to find this place and was a little disappointed.
The restaurant is really neat inside. A nice Victorian style home with good ambiance. The wait staff was knowledgeable and helpful.
The food was okay. It may have been my dish, I had a rabbit pasta. Maybe it was just bad karma for eating a little bunny, but it wasn't that good. My wife had a halibut and shrimp special that was really good with a nice bottle of wine to top it all off.
Overall I found the place pricey and a little pretentious. It was on the more expensive side of my dining experiences and I just don't feel it was worth the money. -
Review from Keshar N.
I am a terrible person. I cheated on Bar La Grassa with this absolutely phenomenal restaurant in Vancouver. Do not believe any of the bad reviews, this place is worth the 4.5 hour plane ride from Minnesota. When I come back to Vancouver this will always be my first place to eat, hands down. We arrived late on a Thursday evening (around 9:30pm) and the place was still hopping, which is always a good sign. The restaurant is a converted home, which adds to the charm and the warmth of the restaurant. The hostess was impeccable and greeted/seated us quickly while taking our coats. We started off with their house special (which they should just add to their menu because it was so stinking good). It was cow milk mozzarella with golden beets. The cheese was so good you wanted to just rub it on your face. Light, creamy and tasty. And you would think you can't tell the difference between cow milk mozzarella and goat milk mozzarella, you are wrong! We then had two of the primos. One was the house special (again, just add this to the menu) it was ravioli with rabbit and bison (I think) in brown butter and the other was their seafood risotto. Oh my sweet holy moly, that ravioli is so good you might want to slap your mom. It was just amazing, rich, meaty fantasticness. The seafood risotto had so much seafood in it, you would think you were just swimming around in the ocean with your mouth open. Every single piece of seafood was fresh tasting, not buried in butter and cheese. We ended this superb meal with their pear tart (also a special, also should just go on the menu). It was absolutely wonderful! It did (in a good way) remind me of a McDonald's apple pie, weird, but those are tasty too. The entire meal start to finish was wonderful. The ambiance and service was fantastic and the FOOD! Ah-may-zing! That is all I can say! I will make sure that the next time I book a trip to Vancouver that after Delta, Lupo is my next call.

I was in Vancouver for 3 days after a week of skiing in Whistler. We got into Vancouver late, staying in the downtown area and didn't know where to go for dinner. Lucky we 'YELP'ed! We found Lupo a couple blocks away - we weren't in the mood for getting really dressed up but we also didn't want to go to the takeout or McDonald's across the street.
Lupo, set in a charming Victorian home, is stylish, original, and serves great food. Mom and I wouldn't have minded eating here every night we were in Van! We cleaned all the plates! -

This is more then your average Italian restaurant - this is a good "ristorante" even for italian standards. As an italian I can tell the difference and Lupo makes everything right for a upper class restaurant with an not so formal attire.
The staff is prepared and you can see that they love their job and the food they are serving. The food not only has the right ingredients and quality, but also the taste transported me back to my home country. If I closed my eyes I felt like I'm back on the shore of Lake Garda.
As a note, the menu is mainly inspired by the northern italian cuisine, fresh pasta, risotto, ossobuco with some picks from the south (burrata etc) and some local ingredients prepared in an italian fashion.
Highly recommendet. -

Went here for what was suppose to be a romantic date night with the fiance but unfortunately sat next to the loudest group of drunks ever.
The place is a totally cute converted old house with lots of charm and character. Try to get seating by the front windows if possible since the larger loud drunk groups seem to be seated near the rear where we unfortunately were sat.
The food is delice. Just skip the expensive sides (ie $6 for a scallop or $3.50 for a prawn literally) and save room for dessert. The prosciutto pizza, ricotta gnocchi and tiramisu were to die for. The smaller second courses are definitely sufficient if ordering appies and dessert. The wine list is quite substantial and priced to please with smaller pours. -

On vacation in Vancouver and wanted to take in the culinary offerings. This restaurant is a hidden treasure in downtown Vancouver! The restaurant is located in a walk-up heritage house in downtown Vancouver. The feeling is warm, intimate and inviting with a European charm. The care and thoughtfulness to detail is apparent in every aspect of the dining experience. The wait staff is excellent. I had the Baby Romaine salad which was crisp, ultra-fresh and presented with just the right balance of dressing. Note - the Bufala Mozzarella antipasti with roasted peppers and mixes greens is not to be missed. For my entree I went with the Veal Ossobucco with saffron risotto which was a true gift from the chef! One word - wonderful! If only I had room for the Lobster Risotto Primi but that will have to wait for the next time. For dessert I sampled the caramelized apple cheese cake. The dinner was complimented by a Brunello di Montalcino Banfi from Michael's extensive yet fairly priced wine list. Coffee is also great!
Dinner was so extraordinary that I cancelled the reservation I had for another restaurant at the end of the week so I might enjoy Julio and Michael's magic one more time before heading home. Take a hint and add Lupo to your must experience list in Vancouver -
