We strolled in for a late morning brunch on Labour Day Sunday.
Not a single complaint, everything was just perfect.
The atmosphere was lovely, the wait staff were delightful and knowledgable, and the food was just excellent. So much so, that I ordered another plate once I'd finished my first.
Loved the Benny and the Pancakes.

After reading the review in Monday Magazine, and hearing from a friend who enjoyed Lucy's in the Square, it sounded like my kind of place.

A friend of mine helped me out recently with some advice and support after a car accident, so I treated her to dinner as a thank you. It was a nice night, so we walked, patting cats and looking at flowers along the way.

Lucy's in the Square is located in the same courtyard as the Belfry Theare, kittycorner to the Fernwood Inn pub. It's a small, narrow place, with seating for about 26 people inside and a couple of small tables inside. We found it a little too dark, and a little too warm, but immediately noticed the great art on the walls. We were greeted by a friendly woman when we came in, and she got our table ready. She did that by putting a fresh sheet of paper on it, and giving us black and white drafting pencils for doodling. A fun, nice touch. We also got a whole carafe of water (this is a plus for me), a tealight candle, a vase with flowers, and some bread and butter, served in a brown paper bag (weird, but kinda sweet/cool). The bread was tasty.

The bathroom (I care about bathrooms!) was bright, spacious, with hand lotion (nice touch) and a little china container of feminine hygiene products (very nice touch) AND, the doors said "girls" and "boys" clearly. I hate so violently being in a restaurant, desperate for a pee, and staring blankly at the doors, one with a painting of a coyote, one with a painting of a ferret, trying to figure out which I am. "Am...I..excuse me...am I a coyote? A ferret..? Ferrets are lithe and curvy...but..sorta phallic....oh, help" and that's when I usually pee in a conveniently placed potted plant.

I stuck to water, but my friend had a glass of sauvignon blanc, and was very pleased with it. All the salads come in half size or full size, which is great. We each started with a half salad, each $4.00 - her the mixed greens and me the romaine salad. Her greens came with a honey vinaigrette dressing she really liked, and some veggies - I think I saw a radish. She enjoyed it a lot and pronounced it very fresh. The romaine salad was kind of like a caesar, but with a lighter, less creamy, more lemony dressing. It was really delicious.

For the main course we each selected a pizza. This is one area i hope Lucy's will expand/improve; the menu is very, very limited. Choice of three pizzas (but they were out of one), a daily soup, and a few entrees. I'd like to see some pastas and some lighter dinners on there - besides the large entrees (meat with veg) that are higher on the price scale as well, there were really only the pizzas. So she had the tomato, bocconcini and...something else, I forget what.... pizza ($11). I had the mushroom, pesto and chicken confit pizza. Both were really good (we swapped slices), imaginative, flavourful and fresh, if a little on the dry side. The crust was very thin, and crunchy at the edges, and doesn't leave you feeling doughy and carb-comatose like so many pizzas.

Alas, we were too full for dessert, but - and this is a nice touch - my friend was asked if she'd like a "splash" more wine, and they gladly poured her half a glass more at half the cost of a full glass.($7, $3) That's really great, and I'm not sure why more places don't do it. Sometimes, a glass and a half of wine is just right, but two glasses would be too much.

Alas, we were too full for dessert, but the selections - polenta almond cake with strawberries, rice pudding with rhubarb, pot de chocolate with chocolate meringue - all sounded tempting enough that we strongly considered.

...but waddled home instead like responsible young women.

I'll definitely be back to try Lucy's in the Square again. The staff were friendly and prompt, the music and ambience was nice, the food was good. I hope there is more choice on the menu next time, but what there is, they do well.

My partner Jason read a review about Lucy's in the Square in Monday Magazine, and we went there for dinner on a whim.  We called ahead, but they only accept reservations for parties of six.  They recommended we arrive between 7:30 and 8pm as a portion of the dinner crowd migrate over to the Belfry around this time.
We arrived while they were completely full, but a table became available in about 15 minutes.
The menu is concise, and everything sounded very appealing.

We ordered a delicious bottle of Chilean wine, and shared two appetizers of meat, cheese and house made chicken liver pate.

Our entrees were amazing.  I had the coq au vin and Jason had the casserolet.  We finished with the creme brulee and coffees.
Our server was very personable and attentive.
We had such a fun time that we made reservations to come back on Valentine's Day.

A charming small restaurant. Full when I got here, at 6.30 on a Saturday evening. Should of made a reservation.

I had Cowichan Bay chicken liver pate, with garlic toasts and pear butter. A delicious combination.

Unfortunately the second course did not meet the expectations set by the first.

As a contrast to follow the lamb curry with honey yogurt - good but not great.

The desert menu was sadly depleted with 2 of the 4 choices not available.

All in all a pleasant, but not outstanding meal.

A nice little brunch place in a nice neighbourhood, Lucy's has a slightly offbeat/creative take on brunch with a list of items that are familiar to all brunch lovers but modified to be Lucy's own creations.

The sausage and hash uses a nice chicken sausage instead of pork sausages and it uses mushrooms and yams instead of potatoes. The result is something that intrigues upon arrival and satisfies on consumption.

In a similar act of bending brunch to their will, the eggs benny pass on the ham or smoked salmon and go with smoked tuna instead. Serving sizes in both cases are a bit smaller than a greasy spoon diner but satisfactory anyways.

Service was friendly, quick and attentive (a refill of coffee was not offered though) while the room was neither too cozy or too cool - just noisy enough to wake you up but not enough to stop your conversations.

All in all, I will return again to try their dinner and also whenever I feel like a brunch that's just a little different.
