Lucky 97 is substantially larger than I expected it to be. While the produce section smells like dirty socks,it can be attributed to the fresh Durian. The farther away you get from the Durian, the more tolerable the smell.

Lucky 97 also appears to have any type of herb or vegetable you could ever dream of. If your recipe calls for Kaffir Lime leaves, this is the place to get them, in addition to about 20 other types of leaves.

This supermarket features just about any other East Asian packaged food you have ever craved.

And while vegetables here are fresh and inexpensive, I should warn you that other western staples, such as Milk and Orange Juice tend to be pricy unless they are on sale.

Lucky 97's plain wrap items are from Safeway, FYI. Also, any of the discounts featured in the Family Foods flyer are applicable at Lucky 97

If I could rate this place a 3.5, I would. Some of the turn-offs of Lucky 97 actually add to the experience...for example, I'd be annoyed with pushy customers at most grocery stores, but here it seems to add the busy, authentic feel of an ethnic shopping experience (slash is reminiscent of family events with far too many Filipina relatives crowded into the kitchen).

The variety of produce available is impressive, and usually quite reasonably priced. Fresh herbs are especially cheap. Beware, though - I found snails in my mint before. Not a reason to avoid the herbs, because really, any fresh produce is at risk for creepy crawlies - just make sure to wash thoroughly!

The staff aren't really that helpful. Once I had to ask where they kept the rice (the aisles had just been re-organized) and the employee looked at me like I was a fraud. The aisle with housewares is pretty fascinating - all sorts of random goodies. I bought a Hello Kitty contact case there! I don't even wear contacts, but I gave the case to my sister and she LOVED it.

Great place for bulk dried shiitake mushrooms at a good price, seaweed that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else, and all sorts of less common spices. Good assortment of miso paste. As a treat I sometimes get assorted buns from the bakery.

This supermarket isn't the most classy of venues, but who am I kidding, I'll be back time and again. Oh, and parking sucks. The parking lot is just asking for fender benders.

Don`t let the stench scare you away, this place is a gem. My grandma has been taking me here since I was little. I remembered plugging my nose every time along with a lot of kicking and screaming. I HATED this place. But these days I take a deep breath and make my way as fast as I can to the BBQ meats counter. Seriously the best BBQ Pork I have ever had, no one has matched it before. The BBQ sausage is pretty good too and it`s all fairly priced.

Also you can get lots of your asian goodies here, ranging from produce, to candy, to teas, to dry foods etc etc. You can pretty much get anything here. If you`re looking to adventure into some random Asian cooking (aka, grab something off the shelf you can`t read and try it) then you`ve come to the right place.

I love finding new ethnic stores and Edmonton has really somehow maintained some of these stores in quality and service.  For some reason, many of my Asian friends on campus don't like Lucky 97 quite as much as I do!  I'm a fan of this store.

The thing is, they've got a lot of fresh & cheap vegetables to begin with.  Also a humungous amount of herbs from lemon grass to thai basil.  I think this one time I went there, I saw maybe 3-4 different types of mint! (Yes, peppermint, regular mint, spearmint etc.)  Whoa!

Another cool thing about the store is that they've got a vendor - yes an actual vendor inside the market, selling sugarcane juice, if I'm not mistaken.  Being that I'm from India and all, sugarcane juice with a bit of squeezed lemon juice is soooo tasty for me!  So I'd usually pick a sugarcane juice at the front and then begin the expedition.

Now, they've got a great collection of fish and meat, but I have never actually bought that stuff.  On the other hand, their refrigerated or frozen packets of  dumplings, unfried spring rolls etc. are awesome.  I guess most of these things are available in modern stores as well, but the variety here astounds me!

Don't forget to check out the soy sauce et al. aisle.  It's awesome.  I never knew there were so many varieties of soy sauce, chilli garlic sauce, fish sauce etc. etc.  The stir-fry sauce is very useful for those looking to make a quick stirfry after a long day at work.  Also, the healthier (lower sodium) variety of soy sauce is a useful find.

My husband and I used to love buying groceries here. However, we have witnessed (and been seriously disturbed by) the actions of Lucky 97's security guards on several occasions in the past month. It would seem shopping there supports that kind of behaviour, and we haven't returned since the last incident.

Yesterday I finally made it into Lucky 97 Supermarket for the first time since high school, and left with a wonderful bag of goodies.
Packed with produce, frozen imported goods and ethnic specialty items, Lucky 97 is the grocery spot to hit if you're seeking something different. Alongside the usual Campbell's soups and Kool-Aid, there's sauces, soy meats and sweets galore. I grabbed a bottle of Arizona Arnold Palmer (since when was this available in Canada?!), Vietnamese sesame-banana candy, Korean coconut biscuits, frozen vegetarian bacon (looks disturbingly realistic), thai coconut milk pudding, Japanese matcha and toasted rice tea, and a bunch of cilantro. The price is right - really, really reasonable - and a browse in this place could keep me occupied for hours.

Lucky 97 is the big Asian supermarket in Chinatown if you are looking for Asian groceries but aren't sure where to find them. My mom used to come here a lot, but only for select items on sale. For a large grocery store, they don't have a great selection, in my view.

I think it used to be a lot better a few years ago; the quality has since then gone down. I've gone a couple times on my own in the past few months, and all times, I couldn't find what I was looking for, or at least it wasn't fresh. They have many imported fruits and vegetables from Asia, but it's usually not very fresh. I was also surprised when I couldn't find any moon cakes for the moon festival last month. You would think they would have those, being a large Asian supermarket. Maybe I came too late for them though.

They have a small baked goods section in one corner, and seafood and meats located in the back of the store. If I'm in the area and need something quick for cheap, I would probably come back here, but there's no guarantee it will be there. Personally, I prefer T&T or the small grocery shops in Chinatown. Even Superstore will do.

Lucky 97 is the centre stage for grocery stores on 97th Street.

This place has a huge assortment of rice, veggies, herbs, sauces, Asian fruits, seafood, meats, Asian snacks and a mountain of noodles.
I love the variety of Asian produce and I mainly buy all my veggies here because it's fresh all the time.
I'm not a big fan of there breads and pastries and I don't find the hot foods that appealing.
I also buy my pork there because I trust it.
All the years I've shopped here, I never bought anything in the "non-asian" asles. To me it felt  like a mini IGA trapped inside Chinatown. Sometimes I wonder if I've been missing out on some good sales over there?!
The best time to shop at Lucky 97 is during the weekdays. If you go during the weekends, it's going to be a gong show! Have fun trying to in and out of the parking lot!

Lucky 97 is the landmark supermarket in Chinatown.  Even if you've never been there, you've probably heard of it.

I went to Lucky 97 for the first time in a few years and I was a little disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a great place to buy Asian imported foods, but it's not quite what it used to be.

I find that everything is a little run down now - even the overall feeling of the place.

I got some star fruit which was yum yum yummy! And I picked up a few other things (fish, noodles, a few spices).

Fair warning, you can very off track while shopping here.  There are so many foreign items that you can easily get distracted and start exploring.  It's fun though!

Lucky 97 is one of the boldest landmarks in Chinatown. It carries regular supermarket items, but specializes in imported Asian goods. You can find loads of Asian juices, snack foods, noodles, and fresh items like meats, seafood, and produce. It actually is not as large as one may assume from looking at the outside - T&T at West Edmonton Mall is bigger. However, this is the premier supermarket to shop for Asian items in this part of the city.

This supermarket located in Chinatown is a mini version of T&T Supermarket in West Edmonton Mall. It is stocked just as nicely, and there is lots of unique, exotic and unknown food on the shelves. I frequent Lucky 97 when I want to buy papaya, mangos, star fruit and fresh herbs which I can't seem to find at other Edmonton grocery stores. The freezers of this supermarket are stocked with imaginable and unimaginable kinds of meat, fish and various sea dwellers. There is always an abundance of fruit and vegetables which due a high level of turnover are always fresh. On shelves you will find everything your heart may desire: from canned sauces and noodles to Asian desserts. There are constant sales and deals happening almost every day of the week.
Frankly, I feel a little lost at Asian grocery stores but I am eager to expand my food horizons and try exotic food. Lucky 97 may just be the place to get it.

If youâve driven through China town you know Lucky 97 Market. Itâs hard to miss. Itâs like the Save-On of China town. I pop in sometimes for mango juice or shrimp chips. Iâve bought produce from here before, and they have a wide variety to choose from that looks fresh, even though the displays arenât as inviting as Western grocery stores make it. There are rows and rows of freezers or every kind of seafood imaginable, most of which Iâve never heard of. There are also lots of aisles of nonperishable, canned exotic fruits, snack foods, juices, dried noodles, spices â" everything youâd find in the ethnic food aisle at Superstore, times 100. Having said this, Lucky 97 is about half of what the T&C Chinese grocery mart at West Edmonton Mall is. That place feels like China. At Lucky 97 thereâs a fresh bakery that smells wonderful, although the selection was quite sparse on a Sunday evening, and there was a take out food section with BBQ duck, spicy tofu and other yummy looking âauthenticâ Chinese dishes.
