Average. No different than Home Depot, and definitely a step under Menards. I feel like Lowes is more focused on selling a larger percentage of products for the home and also carrying what I would say is a decent amount of building materials and bits/pieces, but nowhere near what a pro really needs.
So, to that extent, I can't really complain about it. I've bought some lamps and a carpet and stuff here, and they were decent quality, but not stellar. They do have a pretty decent tool selection, that I will grant them. But, they don't stock replacement parts like batteries, really.
I'm a car guy, so my relationship with a place like this is strictly hardware and maybe some cleaners/solvents. Their hardware section is a bit lacking. They don't have a lot of fairly common stuff (like American fine thread), and they lack a lot of stainless. They have no chrome topped screws/nuts/bolts, which is nice if you're finishing off an interior or attaching something someone is going to look at. Also, you cannot buy individual pieces except for the very large stuff. That's disappointing. I sometimes literally only need one 1/4-28 screw or bolt. Other places that have Hillman fulfill that need.
It's also very disorganized, so don't expect to find something unless all you need is drywall screws.
I think I need to stop going to home centers because they are all really annoying and dumbed down. Not that I'm intelligent (I'm really not), but I feel like I'm not the only person trying to buy American fine thread in stainless in a home center... -

After about 10 minutes, my thought was, I HATE YOU LOWES! That's what I told my girl.
So we are looking for a fence to put up because we have a dog, so we decide to check out Lowes. We get in and ask a lady we need some info on pricing. Shes like well they should have the pricing next to them. NO SHIT! I politely tell her, yes I know, but there are end caps, and other materials I need plus the cost of installation.
So she takes me inside to talk to the install department, the guys who does the fencing questions is not in at the moment. Ok fine. I have all the measurements, I just need a rough estimate. Talk to the install department, he can't help me. I need to go to the costumer service area. So I arrive there, and no one is there but a lady asks if I need help and she'll call someone over. So I'm a little aggravated but calm. So I talk to the lady which was nice but couldn't help me in what I wanted but took my name and number so someone can call me to set up an appointment either that day which is a Saturday or Monday. I figured as much Monday. Nope! Never called, and if he does call, Oh well, I'll find someone else.
Just aggravating!!!! -

Needing to add some plants to our back deck we decided to hit up Lowes. If a manager is reading this...Carl out in the Garden Center deserves a raise. He was extremely helpful and was the only worker that had any knowledge of the different plants, soils and different pots being sold. He was very patient and took the time to answer each of our questions.
The prices were reasonable and had a very large selection to choose from. If you are looking for garden materials...head outside and search out Carl...everyone else there hasn't a clue. -

As I mentioned in my quick-tip, at least it's not Home Depot.
I'm not a tool-person, and I got a good amount of help trying to find the proper tools to grab for a small job I have in my house.
What threw me for a loop was there were supposedly 2 check out stations open, and no one was in sight. Odd. -

My review only covers their products and offering. As a tools and more store, they have a larger variety than Home Depot and excel in areas such as home improvement and lawn and garden. When it comes to selections of bathroom and kitchen hardware, lawn furniture, home fixtures, fans and more, their selection is far wider than some of their competitors. Where they lack, is in popularity and ample customer service. You can turn many corners before finding someone available, but there are some learned ones.
Lowe's is the kind of store that would appeal to the Mom and Pop looking for a more kinder experience, as if getting all your hardware in a department store kind of setting. Good light, detailed and managed shelving add to the easier to find, shopping experience. As of recently, I'm looking to re-do a bathroom and maybe the kitchen. I'm having a good time finding a lot of ideas here with regards to equipment. -

UGH - today's customer service left me so angry and made me feel like we wasted our time. We've been trying to fix a glider with a broken wooden beam. I called Lowe's a couple weeks ago and talked to a really nice guy on the phone where I described our project to him and he said "Sure, come on in - that's our specialty"
When we arrived today, we had awful customer service from start to finish. We headed over to the Projects desk where I was instructed to go to and the lady over there told me that she'd have to page someone. Another ten minutes later, some guy shows up, takes a look at our project and disappears with it with no words. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to follow him or stay put and when I asked the lady at the Projects desk, she just shrugged her shoulders.
When the projects guy finally returned, he said that he didn't have the proper tools to drill the holes in the wooden beam. He told us to go to Tools and he'd page someone for us. At this point, our toddler was not going to sit still and wait another half an hour for service so we headed to the swings section. While my poor husband waited half an hour for someone that was supposedly paged before finally waving down someone. After an hour of wasted time, he was informed that Lowe's couldn't help us.Listed in: Homeowner Ease

I know my wife was the last one to review this place but I'm sure with today's service that she'd agree to not be so generous with the stars.
So she had called them a couple of weeks ago to see if they could help us with a small project that we have going on. They said on the phone that it wouldn't be a problem and to bring it in.
So that's what we did. Had all the parts all ready and the lumber as well. We went to the Project Desk and the woman working there looked like she was out of it. She called over a guy from Lumber that seemed like he had a million things going on but tried to help us out. He talked me about the project but then went to the woman at the Project Desk. From what I gathered, she called the wrong department. The guy walked off to the Tools Department and we were left hanging.
My wife asked the woman if we should follow. She said, "Er, I dunno." He returned and said that he page someone for us so we walked over to the Tools Department and waited....and waited...and waited. Finally I got fed up and asked a guy if he worked there which he confirmed. When I talked to him about the project that required a couple of holes to be drilled (which my wife specified on the phone) he said that they don't do that there and I'd need to go find a carpenter.
Thanks...for nothing.
Confused staff and horrible customer service = 1 Star. -

Super-fast returns handler had me in and out in less than 3 minutes. I wish all Lowe's locations knew how to get things done as efficiently as this one!

UPDATE 9/10: I actually give this place a rating of 1 1/2 stars. As much as I like the merchandise and the layout of the store, NEVER NEVERNEVER special order anything from these people. If anything goes wrong they will string you along, take no responsibility and make your life a living hell if you try to get any money back. They lost a part of my order, had another part come in broken, and even after discussing this with the store manager, I have yet to get any kind of reimbursement 2 months later. its kind of a "whoops, too bad for you" mentality.
Original post:
As someone who has worked retail for much of her life I can tell you that while some people hired at these establishments are less than brilliant, some are just over worked slobs who are tired of obnoxious, petulant customers.
I went there to order a new vanity cabinet and countertop. The woman who waited on me was very cautious and almost cold at the beginning, but when she saw I wasn't some flake out to ask her a billion questions and then leave, she warmed up considerably. Maybe not the best tactic, but hey, Ive been there so I can totally relate.
I love the layout of this store, and that they are rarely out of stock. It is very cheery and neat and appeals to many tastes and budgets. Even on the weekends I rarely have problems parking or checking out.
But watch out for bad children. They will stop your heart with the shrieking that will echo through the place. You will not be able to go anywhere within the store to get away from the sound. Maybe they could pass out muzzles at the door? Just a thought.Listed in: House of Blues

After going to several Home Depot locations in and around the city of Chicago and having absolutely horrible experiences, I wasn't expecting much from Lowes since it's the same type of "big box" store. However, I have to say that I'm quite a fan after going to this one on Touhy. My typical experience in these big stores is that the staff are not helpful and not at all knowledgeable and really don't care if they "help" you or not. With Lowes I had the opposite experience. I went in on a Saturday morning for assistance with some small home decor projects for our new house. The staff wer extrmemely helpful in locating items as well as assisting me with their opinion on window treatment options for our nursery. I also found their stock of home decor items to be at least 2-3 times bigger than Home Depot and more reasonbly priced. They are the first store I've been into that sells lamp shades separate of lamp bodies for a reasonable price.
I would give them a five except I do have to admit that I had to go to the help desk to find someone to help and there were only two checkout lanes available. I'm hoping that this great service continues and plan to go there again for future projects. -

Holy Shit...can you say brain dead!
Walked in on a Tuesday nite around 5:45pm to pick up a few items and have some keys made. The store was deserted - seemed like there were like 2 people working there. So I go up to the key stand and the old guy manning that station is helping someone else in an isle. After waiting like 5 minutes I go to the Customer Service area and they call the same guy back to the desk (who is helping someone else). Nobody shows up. Then again after a few minutes I go back to Customer Service and they act like I had never been there...ok I'll cut to the chase. The old crumungen finally gets back and I hand him over the keys and 2 of the 3 keys I wanted they don't have in stock....so I say FORGET ABOUT IT - NOT WORTH IT!
Then I ask someone else if they have paper garden bags and she points and says yes, they're over there...I walk over there and um....no nothing.
IMPOSSIBLE to find someone in any isle to help you. The ones that roam around up front are like zombies. again...holy shit - won't be back here anytime soon. -

Where do I begin...
On September 5th, almost a month ago, we purchased a washer/dryer, dishwasher, a microwave and a gas range at the Lincolnwood location. It is October 7th, and we STILL don't have it.
The first trip to the store was a breeze - we did our research, purchased all items in 20 minutes or so, paid and were happily on our way.
The items were not in stock, however we were assured it shouldn't take long to get them - maybe a week or 10 days.
As 2 weeks went by, we did receive washer/dryer and the dishwasher, which were installed, thank you for that.
However, no news about the microwave or the range... We called the store on Sept 20. We were then told that the stove/microwave are back-ordered and that the store rep has *no idea* when they will be in. We asked for an approximate timeline at least - *I really can't tell* was a reply.
Well, we called the store again on Sept 27 - turns out the microwave *did* arrive (was anyone going to call and tell us that?). We were promised to have it delivered this week, which is great.
The range - same story as prior. "It's a very popular range... I see it on back order... we don't have it yet... I don't know when we'll get".
Hooray - after spending 20 mins holding on phone, again - we were told the stove arrived last week and is to be delivered this Monday. Nope.... didn't happen. No one called, no one came.
We were surprised to experience this at Lowes. The very store which claims to be "customer service excellence award recipient" in a TV commercial, seems to be letting us down in this exact area.
Yo - CAN SOMEONE CALL AND TELL US WHEN THE RANGE WILL BE DELIVERED?? The ticket/invoice number is 84717.
I figure, getting an answer from a RANDOM person would be no more difficult than a Lincolnwood Lowes staffer. -

This is my second review. This Lowes is getting one star, and lucky to be getting that!
My experience there is why I started to write reviews here on Yelp.
Let me start off by saying, I cruise home improvement stores like my wife cruises shoe stores, lol, I love that woman!
I am a craftsman by trade and I am infatuated by tools. Don't know why.
I'm in this Lowe's and I see an item, which was marked on sale at a pretty good reduction.
The employee didn't have information on this item so he calls a for manager, I waited by the item for about half an hour (while having him paged two more times)
To make a long story short, after negotiating with the manager (who finally showed up) and he going back on his word, twice, not honoring the marked price, I walked out without any merchandise and called the Lowes home office.
The "home office" called the Operation Manager of that store, who then called me back after two days and said they would now honor the first advertised price.
Here is the beautiful part:
Thinking the store would be empty on a Saturday morning at 6am, I went back there, and it was empty, except for 6 employees flocking around the service desk.
I asked the cashier for the Operation Manager, she replied "he's not here" and referred me to an uninterested man, sitting in a rolling office chair behind the service desk.
He was the only manager on duty.
First of all, there was no acknowledgement until I had to "get" his attention.
He lets out a huge, uninterested sigh, and tells me that he will have to call the "Operations Manager" (I still don't believe he did, remember, it was 6am)
I stood there about 2 minutes, overheard him speaking on the phone and asked him if he was speaking to the Operations Manager, he said "No, I left him a message."
But never turned around to me to inform of that fact, but made a personal phone call instead.
I had to leave, I had to leave right then!! I felt the blood pressure rising.
When, and if, I get this said item I will never step foot in this store again!
Sorry to ramble on, but I expect to be treated correctly when I'm spending my money.
P.S. The funny thing about this whole story is, I was not even looking for this item until the advertised price caught my eye! -
Review from John F.
Nice new store with very good garden selection, especially if you are looking for miniature evergreens at low prices. Rest of store is well laid out and stocked, with perhaps a bit less selection than Menard's or some Home Depots. As a couple of other folks mentioned, a number of the employees are complete idiots -- perhaps if they paid living wages, they'd have more to choose from.

I'll take Lowes over home depot anyday. They have people who can actually help you. And to add to Dee W's coupon you can also pick them up from the post office in the welcome to the neighborhood packet. After a good selection at good prices.

I usually hit Home Depot as a matter of convenience but today went a little out of the way to shop at Lowe's. We were in the market for ceiling fans and lighting fixtures and shopped at Home Depot but then decided to drive over to Lowe's, just to see what was available. Better selection-larger and more interesting and dynamic! We also found the employees to be much more helpful, available and friendly. It was such a good experience that we ended up picking up materials for several other projects. And we had a 10% off coupon that I found while walking the dog-it pays to look down people!

I have just had a crappy experience with Lowes. I bought a window air conditioner from them, then had their installation guy come out to see if he could install it. He was 1/2 hour late, then wanted to drill holes in the masonry, and in the new metal frames in the windows. I don't think so. I did not have the AC yet. I found someone else to install it and wanted to arrange delivery. I was talking to someone who thought I was talking about a grill. It took 3 phone calls to get through to them what I wanted. Then it is $59 for delivery. No thanks. I'm going with someone else for the whole job and now I get to go and get my money back. Maybe this whole scenario was too complicated for them and I should have found an air conditioner specialist in the first place.
I would not go to them for anything more complicated than buying something right off the shelf. Even that would be a challenge because I could not find anyone in the store to show me where the air conditioners were. -

I always thought that all stores with home improvement are the same so I usually picked the one that was the closest especially when we needed something right away but lately I found Lowe's to be a bit different. They use different manufactures and have a nice selection in most if their departments. Recently we shopped for patio doors and found the staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful. The price was a little lower than the at the other stores. I will definitely come back.

It's freat-always has what I'm looking for, and the employees don't hide from the customers. They are helpful and polite, and parking's always easy. Also, the plants I bought there are still alive and kicking a year later!
