Review from Coleen L.
Being a Texan living in Winnipeg, this place is definitely a breath of fresh air. I never would have imagined being able to find a place in Winnipeg where people know how to make REAL Bar-B-Que, but for anyone that doesn't have the luxury of taking a trip down south for BBQ, you've got the perfect place, right in your own back yard.
My chopped brisket sandwich was everything my mouth remembered from back home, and I ate it in probably about 2 minutes flat because it was so delicious. I tried some of my husband's wings and they were exquisite to say the least. You don't even have to fight with the meat, it just falls right off and is the most juicy, flavourful wing I've ever had.
This father-daughter team have got it down, and are obviously passionate about good food. They are friendly and knowledgeable and I loved their food and service so much that I ordered some take-out.
Go to Lovey's and support local Winnipeg businesses! -

Okay, I haven't dined here since 2009 so I dropped by for a quick lunch. I picked up the beef brisket sandwich meal with coleslaw ($7.99). Wow, have things gone downhill. The beef brisket was terribly DRY and had no flavor. The BBQ sauce tasted like Kraft's generic version. Even the coleslaw was pretty blah. I can't see myself returning here for anything more as dry BBQ meat is not a good selling point. Too bad.

A Manitoban living in Texas but visiting the old home town on a frigid January weekend, I got my chance to try out Lovey's. First, I like its unpretentious location, in a strip mall on a busy stretch of Marion. Inside the quintessential barbeque restaurant, with the indispensable roll of paper towel on each table.
It's southern US BBQ but it is also a bit French-Canadian. Poutine, for instance. Maybe they should try to slow cook some Bison short ribs for added Manitoba authenticity.
Pretty busy for a Saturday afternoon. I was almost tempted to order a bourbon, they have a decent selection (maybe the best in Manitoba but about normal for any bar in the US south), but went for the iced tea. It was pre-sweetened. Should offer unsweetened too.
Ordered the pulled pork sandwich Memphis style. It was very good but not quite tender enough to be outstanding. Good sauce, messy, soft bun. Very good potato salad.
I hope this place becomes an institution. Has Winnipeg had a southern-style restaurant since the late great Percy Haynes' chicken shack?
Back a couple of times since the above review:
The ribs have justly been recognized as the best in Winnipeg. They beat those of the White House, Silver Heights and Rae & Jerry's.
The beans are terrific! And I don't even like beans!
Brisket is okay. It is a hard thing to do well. You might need 37C ambient temperatures and mesquite wood to pull it off. But my frame of reference is Franklin BBQ in Austin and Smitty's in Lockhart, TX. -

This has got to be the best place to get ribs in Winnipeg and maybe even the northern midwest. My criteria for great ribs is if it melts off the bone and these ribs definitely fall off. I get hungry just thinking about them. The sauce/ flavoring is also authentic. The owner has done lots of research as can be seen by the various photos of him with BBQ chefs from all across North America (mostly in the southern US). I'm sure he just didn't go there for the photo op.
The chopped beef is also spectacular. My wife usually avoids pork products so always orders the chicken. She has yet to be dissappointed. We've come out there ever since they opened a few years ago. The strip mall has quite a few nice restaurants to visit amazingly enough.
The beans and potatoes are also great side dishes. Perhaps the only drawback is the restaurants lack of cheaper options. They have sandwhiches but you have to either get a full meal (meat, potatoes, coleslaw, beans, AND corn bread) which tends to be a bit too much or only the meat which might not be enough. One way to overcome this obstacle is if you are eating with someone else who also doesn't have the standard US big size appetite, is to order one full meal and one a la carte meat. That should more than satisfy the stomach and you will walk out the door rather than stagger and blow up.
