I have been a fan of this place for years and yet when I go I am still so pleased with the quality of the food and the great service. A recent birthday celebration found the kitchen still firing on all cylinders and the menu featuring old favourites and a few fresh items.
Starters tried were the seafood gumbo and Dem Bones (glazed pork ribs). Both were good, the ribs were absolutely great and served with the best black eyed peas I have ever had.
Mains: Tournedos Ya Ya is my favourite beef dish currently being served in town. Perfectly seared beef tenderloins topped with a mango-chutney and peppercorn demi-glace and served with amazing potatoes Anna. Pasta Catahoula was a nice mix of noodles and blackened chicken in a tomato lime sauce.
The flourless chocolate cake is served with a lovely light custard and fresh fruit. It is a chocolate lovers dream.
If you haven't been for a while, you should try it again. It really is one of the best places in the city. -

I had a dream.... a dream of a Saturday filled with a dinner of deliciously delectable delicacies. Delivered to me on demand to devour devilishly. Instead... I got a disastrous day of despair.
This is part Two of that story: Louisiana Purchase
You can find part one here: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
If you have read part one you know the plan for this fateful day; and you will also notice that we did not end up at Tres Carnales. The reason for this is that when we arrived there there was a line up.... just to stand inside for an even longer line up. Knowing what I know now, I wish we would have waited.
I quickly grabbed my phone and looked up some highly rated restaurants in the downtown area, and I noticed a place i had wanted to try. Off we rushed to my first ever Yelp disappointment.
Let me start by saying that I waited a full week before I sat down to write this review....I needed time, I needed distance, I did not want rush to a negative review and I had hoped time would change my mind... it didnt.
The ONLY reason I can think of that this place is ranked so highly is due to a major emergence of food hipsters. People who will rank anything five/four star so long as its unique or unknown, with no regard to the actual food.
And so let my review begin.....
We walked in and we were seated. I must admit, the ambiance was great. Its what I expect a Creole restaurant to feel like. I was excited and expected nothing but an amazing experience. There was an interesting mix between old and young and the place was packed.
I knew right away that I must try the alligator. So we ordered an appetizer of alligator and the crab cake. Our drinks arrived and there was clearly something wrong with the syrup distribution in the soda, meh common problem. Asked for a new drink as I heard the man at the table next to me complain about the exact same thing. Then our food arrived and let the real disappointment begin. The alligator was ... small, it was cooked... OK... and tasted like the had just taken it and dipped it in a bunch of Louisiana hot sauce. The value of this is not what you could get at other restaurants in the city for the same price - for example the red piano's alligator dish. The crab cake on the other hand, was good, it was rested on a bed of rice and both my cousin and I were happy with it. This would be the only edible dish of the entire night.
At this point I was still excited, and expected great things so for our entrees we both ordered "half and half orders" because we wanted to try as many different things as we could. This is a great option for a restaurants to have that allows us each to order half sizes of two dishes and pay for one full size. In total we tried 4 different sizable entrees:
Pecan Pork Medallions
Salmon, Shrimp & Crawfish Boudin (sausage)
Louisiana Jambalaya
Chicken Lafitte
I will review the Boudin last....
The jambalaya was bland, this was the opposite of the alligator problem where all you could taste is spice, here you couldn't taste anything. But at least it wasnt burnt, which brings me to the pork AND the chicken.
How a creole restaurant not understand the difference between blackened and burnt is beyond me. At first I thought it was just the pork, but when we tried the chicken it was clear that everything was overcooked. A good blackened dish will have a nice spicy crust... yet still moist and tasty inside. It will not however, be dry, hard and easily substituted for a weapon.
This brings me to the Sausage (Boudin).... This dish was beyond redemption. I think My cousin put it best when he said "never before have I wanted to be sick, just to get the taste of dinner out of my mouth". The "pink & green peppercorn cream" is a grey slop that somehow actually makes the dish worse worse.

Short review:
Atmosphere: 4/5- As I said, great atmosphere.
Service: 2/5 - Had a hard time getting any service. i guess if one was looking for an excuse they could point to the fact that the place was almost full... but they also had more then enough servers so who knows.
Food: 1/5 - Mind blowingly unacceptable: Burnt (NOT blackened), hard, dry, bland and all around bad. With the exception of the crab cake of course.
Dinning experience: 1/5 - The first time ive ever been let down by reviewers on yelp. (Don't worry i forgive you guys)
Price: 2/5 - 70$ for both of us. The portions were large but we ended up wishing they weren't. we could have gotten a much better value anywhere else.
Average: 2 - Will I be back? Im not opposed to second chances but I wont be back, nor recommending it unless something major changes.
***** note! going forward i shall assign a double value for the food rating. I feel as though this is one of the major reasons people go to restaurants and as such, should be given higher importance. the Atmosphere shouldn't carry bad food. -

Showed up to this place right when it opened and was excited about the prospect of having some good cajun food!
Walked in and was immediately asked if I had a reservation or not, to which I replied no. The gentle man that greeted me seemed surprised but seated me anyways. Throughout the course of the night numerous people were turned away because they didn't have reservations, meanwhile more than half of the restaurant was empty! This place doesn't deserve an extensive review from me because that would be a huge waste of my time.
Food quality was below average, worst sausage I've ever had, my blackened chicken was burnt to the extent that there were parts of my chicken that weren't edible, bad atmosphere, expensive, bad service.
Plain and simple you should not go there. But if you decide to, make sure you have a reservation or they will turn you away with an empty stomach and an empty restaurant. -

Louisiana Purchace is a really cute little restaurant with lots of really cute waitresses. It's fancy with a casual feel and the food and drinks are well priced too.
The daily specials are usually fresh fish with salad or something fun that the cooks think up (the cajun mac and cheese is the best!) The scallops, and beer battered shrimp are excellent starters and the entree portions are huge. Don't worry though, you can get most main dishes in half orders (which I find perfect) or in combos so you can try two dishes at once!
Make a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights, they do fill up most weekends. The patio is also really nice in the summer too. -

My guy took me to Louisiana Purchase to celebrate the start of my 27th year of life. I had frequently told him I wanted to try it so I was very excited to finally get to go. The restaurant itself is not overly large with comfortable tables and chairs and a definite New Orleans feel to it. We sat at a table for two and listened to the background jazz music as we perused the menu. We made our picks and enjoyed a couple beers as we waited for our food.
Our appetizers arrived quickly and were simply presented but smelled divine. Heath went for the crab cake which he generously split in half with me. The crab was delicious and soft and densely packed into the cake which was topped with a creamy sauce. I decided to defy all laws of the food chain and try the Gator Kabob. It was amazing! Its not like chicken at all, but more like a mix of chicken and pork. It was perfectly seasoned, slightly spicy and tangy and really nicely cooked.
I am not a big seafood eater so the main dish was a little harder for me to decide on as most of the menu has seafood in it. I decided on a half order of the Tournedoes Ya Ya which was a delicious piece of beef tenderloin with rice and a side of red cabbage slaw. It was all delicious and the perfect portion size for me. My date decided on the Louisiana Jambalaya which was just a little spicy and filled with seafood. He was nice enough to give me a few fish free bites and I was hoping he would pack some up for home but he managed to finish it all off.
This is an excellent restaurant if you are looking for something truly unique in Edmonton. The food is creole and Cajun and cooked to perfection. The music and soft lighting make this a great place for a date, but its also very comfortable for casual groups. Some people were dressed up, others were in jeans, so no pressure to dress up that we could see. I am looking forward to making this a regular stop! -

I have never seen so many bottles of hot sauce in one place. At Louisiana Purchase, their collection occupies an entire wall! L.P. sports ample Mardi Gras masks, a good jazzy soundtrack and, of course, a brag-worthy hot sauce collection. The food is pretty good, albeit not the best Cajun/Creole food I've ever had. (That being said, it's inordinately difficult to find Cajun/Creole cuisine in Edmonton) The jambalaya is generous and full of spicy sausage and seafood. The hush puppies are miraculously good - deep friend morsels of heaven. The alligator is neither here nor there. Honestly, it takes like a cross between chicken and bologna and I wouldn't order it again, other than for the novelty value. The portions are enormous.

This restaurant makes you feel right at home the second you walk through the door. We ordered the bisque which was incredible. Appys were pecan crusted brie, and scallops. Again incredible. By this time, I was already stuffed silly, but was determined to try the green onion crab cakes. They did not disappoint. The service was excellent, atmosphere was comfortable, and the food, beyond our expectations. Will be back again. and again.

They have a casual atmosphere with great food.
The Aligator Kabobs were incredible. I was actually hesitant to get them at first but after I tried them I was happy I did. They have a blackened catfish which is really good too. It was cripsy and spicey and so juicy.
I would go back although it is a little bit pricey . -

Okay, this was a place that a friend of mine used to work at and told me I had to check out. If you like Cajun food and awesome atmosphere then you'll love this place. If you haven't tried alligator than you MUST try the alligator kebob! It's sooo good. Wash it down with a caesar... you'll never have one like it! For dinner you've got to try the Pasta Catahoula, which has slices of blackened chicken breast with penne pasta and a yummy tomato-herb butter with parmesan... yeah sounds good right? It tastes super! Curtis tried the special, which was the Blackened Salmon and loved it. He enjoyed the backed potato. We ended up going back with his family. I tried the Chicken Lafitte, which is a spiced grilled piece of chicken breast with a very yummy herb cream cheese & smoked salmon on the sided. It was amazing! No! To die for. The chicken and salmon where prepared to perfection. Everyone besides Curtis had the BBQ Rib combo plate which looked and smelled so delicious that I made a mental note to order that the next time Curtis and I go back there. Curtis got the Tournedos Ya-Ya which is a lovely pan-fried medallions of beef tenderloin; he said, "it's like having two little mini steaks!" The beef was tender and very well seasoned... I know because I snagged a piece while he wasn't looking! It was a great night... well two nights, with really good food. I can't wait to go back there.

Hubby and I just made a return visit to Louisiana Purchase last week to try a few more items on the menu. We found the Salmon, Shrimp and Crawfish Boudin (sausages) to be a generous portion of two large sausages, but they seemed bland to both of us. And the peppercorn cream sauce didn't add much except a bit of pepper. Not sure if the kitchen was just off or if they always taste like that, but we won't be trying them again. The bouillabaise was delicious. It wasn't a very large bowl, but a fair price just the same. We had the Cottonpickin Chicken and the Pecan Pork medallions again and it was just as good as last time. We tried the Natchez Shrimp (deliciously buttery and tangy flavour) and the Pasta Catahoula which was ok, but I'm not sure what everyone else is raving about as it tasted fairly average to us. But different strokes for different folks. They wait staff was run off their feet due to a couple of servers calling in sick, but they picked up the pace and made sure everyone was taken care of. It was a very cold night and I must say that brick wall really reflects the cold so I kept my coat on through dinner. We skipped dessert since we weren't impressed with it last time, but we did see some very nice looking desserts being served. I wanted to ask people how they tasted, but I chickened out.

Review from Maria F.
After having a bad experience at the first ever Cajun restaurant I visited, I was skeptical to visit Louisiana Purchase. My husband insisted we give it a chance, since this place has been getting rave reviews in Edmonton's local newspapers. So we made a reservation, hoping that this time the food will be better. And it was!
We visited this restaurant on Friday night, and the place was busy. There were mostly young couples, so the place felt intimate and relaxed. We ordered shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, pasta Catahoula and steamboat jambalaya. Now this is what real Cajun food should taste like! The light, fluffy crab cakes were my favorite. My pasta was al dente and the tomato and herbs butter sauce was pure perfection. My husband was extremely happy with his jambalaya: he said he could really taste the saffron which gave the rice a nice kick, and was satisfied with the amount of seafood (crab claw, shrimp and mussels) in his dish.
All dishes at Louisiana Purchase are reasonably priced, considering their more than ample size. I will definitely come back here either for a romantic night with my husband or with a group of friends. -

My one visit to Louisiana Purchase was among the best of my dining experiences in Edmonton. The food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere had a unique character to it, often lacking in trendier places. The food is cajun and creole, so be ready for a bit of spice. There's jambalaya, catfish, crab cakes, alligator kebobs, oysters, beer-battered shrimp, or cottin pickin' chicken if you're not a seafood lover. The ambiance and soft lighting and music make you want to linger here. It's a great place for either a romantic dinner or to get together with a group of friends who have diverse tastes. The lunch menu has smaller portions for less, and if you have specific dietary restrictions, just tell the waiter and they'll help you order something that will work for you. If you haven't been to Louisiana's yet but you like the fare at Dadeo's, this is more of the same great southern food, but classier and more gourmet.
